The findings from this review demonstrate that there is no national standard postoperative stoma care pathway, yet such pathways are a cost-effective means to improve patient outcomes and care.

Current guidelines and regulations require trusts to take full responsibility for deaths within their premises. Higher than expected deaths indicate poor standards of care or negligence. NHS Trusts need to put systems in place to ensure that they learn and extrapolate risk factors through in-depth review of care provided to patients prior to their deaths, curb and ultimately diminish relative mortality through improved practices, and improve care and safety for the whole organisation.

We present a case of a 79-year-old male with a Salmonella enteritidis prosthetic knee joint infection preceded by an episode of profuse diarrhea. Objective: To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of short-duration post-amputation antibiotic therapy in diabetic patients with total resection of osteomyelitis assessed by sterile bone bacteriological samples obtained from the resection margin.

The number of women studying in medical schools is increasing, and the relative proportion of female consultants in surgical and leadership roles is lagging behind, relatively, and so a new drive for promoting and supporting women in surgery has evolved. A part of this was the creation of the Society of Women in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This short communication gives proceedings of the inaugural conference of SWiMS and discusses the need for greater promotion of women in the speciality (and the profession at large) and how the society has addressed the need for resilience and community in surgical training and beyond.
