Mild liver injury following withdrawal of long-term prednisone therapy: A case report.

Background: Liver injury manifesting as hepatic enzyme abnormalities, has been occasionally identified to be a feature of primary or secondary Addison's disease, an uncommon endocrine disease characterized by adrenal insufficiency. There have been no more than 30 reported cases of liver injury explicitly attributed to Addison's disease. Liver injury resulting from adrenal insufficiency due to glucocorticoid withdrawal is exceptionally rarer.

Advanced anaplastic thyroid carcinoma with positive expression of PD-L1 response to immune checkpoint inhibitors: A case report.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is one rare type of thyroid carcinoma without standard systemic treatment for advanced disease. Recent evidence has demonstrated promising efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors, particularly those targeting programmed death-1 (PD-1)/programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1), in a variety of solid tumors. However, there have been no research of immune checkpoint inhibitors plus chemotherapy in ATC.

Heart Failure in Atrial Fibrillation Subtypes in Women and Men in the Tromsø Study.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) often coexist and impact morbidity and mortality. There is limited knowledge on the association of AF subtypes with HF according to sex.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore sex-specific associations between AF subtypes and subsequent HF, identifying HF risk factors in participants with AF, and exploring the combined impact on mortality.

Clinical validation of a biopsy-based six-gene signature prognostic for aggressive prostate cancer.

Objectives: This study aimed to clinically validate the six-gene prognostic molecular clinical risk score (MCRS) for the prediction of aggressive prostate cancer in diagnostic biopsy tissue.

Methods: MCRS was evaluated in prostate biopsy tissue from a Swedish cohort of men with prostate cancer (UPCA,  = 100). The primary outcome of adverse pathology and secondary outcomes of high primary Gleason (≥G4) and high pathological T-stage (≥T3) were assessed by likelihood ratio statistics and area under the receiver operating characteristic curves from logistic regression models; time to biochemical recurrence was assessed by likelihood ratio statistics and C-indexes from Cox proportional hazard regression models.

Focal therapy of prostate cancer: Use of artificial intelligence to define tumour volume and predict treatment outcomes.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate new software (Unfold AI) in the estimation of prostate tumour volume (TV) and prediction of focal therapy outcomes.

Subjects/patients And Methods: Subjects were 204 men with prostate cancer (PCa) of grade groups 2-4 (GG ≥ 2), who were enrolled in a trial of partial gland cryoablation (PGA) at UCLA from 2017 to 2022. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided biopsy (MRGB) was performed at diagnosis and at 6 and 18 months following PGA.

Background: Prostate cancer is the most common urologic malignancy in men, it is witnessing a huge burden in developing countries. Prostate-specific antigen has served as a tool in diagnosis and prognostication. To improve its sensitivity, Prostate-specific antigen density is being used to discriminate between benign and malignant conditions to avoid the incidence of unnecessary biopsy.

The Hypertriglyceridemic Waist Phenotype is Associated with an Adverse Cardiometabolic Profile in this Cohort of Nigerians.

Background: The hypertriglyceridemic waist (HTGW) phenotype was introduced as a means of identifying individuals at risk of developing metabolic syndrome as well as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. However, studies surrounding the prevalence of the phenotype and its relationship with established markers of cardiometabolic risk, especially in the Nigerian population, remain sparse. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of the HTGW phenotype and explore its relationship with cardiovascular risk markers, namely Castelli Risk Indices I and II (CRI-I and CRI-II), Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) and serum triglyceride-HDL cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL).

Selective cerebral perfusion for reduced cerebral blood flow during debranching thoracic endovascular aortic repair.

A 69-year-old man with chest pain was diagnosed with acute type B aortic dissection with the entry tear located at distal arch and a distal aortic arch aneurysm. Therefore, we performed debranching thoracic endovascular aortic repair 2 weeks after type B aortic dissection onset. First, the graft was anastomosed to bilateral axillary arteries.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has emerged as a sexually transmitted infection in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). We estimated the seroprevalence and incidence of HCV infection and examined patterns of HCV testing among GBM using human immunodeficiency virus preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Ontario, Canada.

Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a rare and autoimmune hemolytic disorder caused by the presence of cold-reacting autoantibodies against red blood cells. An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a potentially life-threatening condition. This report describes an 83-year-old man with AAA who was diagnosed with primary CAD 9 years before undergoing AAA surgery.

While FMD often involves the renal arteries, it can affect any arterial bed. FMD has a characteristic angiographic appearance of a "string of beads.

In recent years, research on taste perception has increasingly focused on its influence on food consumption, preferences, and long-term health. While bitter and sweet tastes have been well-studied, less is known about salty and umami tastes and their effects on dietary habits. This study aimed to address this gap by exploring sensory-hedonic patterns for 'savory' stimuli, encompassing both umami and salty tastes, in a representative sample of Italian adults, with a focus on gender-specific differences.

Circulating endothelial progenitor cells and inflammatory markers in type 1 diabetes after an acute session of aerobic exercise.

Objective: To determine circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) counts and levels of inflammatory markers in individuals with and without type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in response to an intense aerobic exercise session.

Subjects And Methods: In total, 15 adult men with T1DM and 15 healthy individuals underwent a 30-minute aerobic exercise session on a cycle ergometer at 60% of the peak heart rate. The EPC count (CD45/CD34/KDR), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels were measured before and 60 minutes after the session.

Association between genetic variants in hsa-miR-27a and hsa-miR-146a genes and male infertility.

Background: miRNAs have enormous potential to be used as diagnostic and prognostic markers as well as therapeutic targets in male infertility and diseases of the reproductive system. This study aimed to investigate the association between the two functional genetic variants in the hsa-miR27a (rs2910164) and hsa-miR-146a gene (rs895819) and male infertility in North Macedonian population, as well as to test their association with the values of major seminal parameters.

Methods: The case group included in this study comprised 158 men initially diagnosed with idiopathic male infertility.

Humans are no exception, and examples of exclusionary behavior abound in political, business, and social settings. Prevalence of psoriatic arthritis in Italy: insights from the multicentric MAPSI study.

Introduction: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory arthropathy associated with cutaneous psoriasis (PsO), first defined by Moll and Wright. Initially perceived as relatively benign, PsA is now recognized for its chronic, progressive, and destructive nature, significantly impacting patients' quality of life, similar to Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Globally, PsA represents about 20% of cases in early arthritis clinics, posing diagnostic and management challenges.

Gender disparities in academic leadership positions may be influenced by several factors, including research productivity. We aimed to describe the publication gender gap in major plastic surgery journals, assess gender-related and gender-neutral research publications, and identify any potential gender disparities associated with publication characteristics. For this cross-sectional study, we reviewed all original research publications in , and from 2014 through 2018.

Biases in the performance of FRAX without BMD in predicting fracture risk in a multiethnic population with diabetes: the Diabetes & Aging Study.

Fracture risk calculators, such as the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX), calculate the risk of major osteoporotic (MOF) and hip fracture, but do not account for the excess risk of fracture in people with diabetes. We examined the predictive performance of FRAX without BMD in ethnically diverse, older patients with diabetes. Patients included were between ages 65-89 from the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Diabetes Registry and not already taking osteoporosis medications.

Paton Prize Lecture Winner 2024: Gordon Holmes and the Irish spirit of adventure: Lessons for modern thinkers.

This lecture is given in honour of Sir William Paton (1917-1993), physiologist, pharmacologist and Fellow of the Royal Society. His passion for the history of medicine led to generous donations to the Society, who consequently founded the Paton Prize Fund for historical research. After his death, this eponymous Prize Lecture was debuted in 1994.
