Since its inception in 2003, the African Society of Human Genetics (AfSHG) has been central to the promotion of genetics research on the continent, and facilitated the networking of African researchers within Africa and abroad, thereby significantly contributing to the career development of African geneticists. The continuation of these accomplishments was stimulated by the 12 international conference of AfSHG held jointly with the 1 Congress of the Malian Society of Human Genetics (MSHG) in Bamako, Mali from September 18 to 21 2019. The main theme of the conference was "Human Genetics and Genomics as a Unifying Factor for Harmony and Progress in Africa".

Background: Community-based management of acute malnutrition is an effective treatment model for severe acute malnutrition. However, sparse evidence exists on post-discharge outcomes and the sustainability of recovery. This study aimed to evaluate the risk and determinants of relapse following severe acute malnutrition recovery in high-burden settings.

Background: Triple artemisinin-based combination therapies (TACTs) can delay the spread of antimalarial drug resistance. Artesunate-amodiaquine is widely used for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. We therefore aimed to determine the safety and efficacy of artemether-lumefantrine-amodiaquine and artesunate-amodiaquine with and without single low-dose primaquine for reducing gametocyte carriage and transmission to mosquitoes.

The genus , known for its melanized, yeast-like appearance, includes a diverse group of fungi with significant implications across various fields. An isolate representing a novel species was identified within this genus from a ginger tuber from India, based on morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analysis. Phylogenetic analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the 26S LSU rRNA gene, SSU rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region confirmed this strain as a new species.

Background: Malaria remains a significant public health concern, despite global efforts to combat the disease with highest burden in Africa. Reports of emerging artemisinin partial- resistance in East Africa emphasize the importance of molecular data to guide policy decisions. Hence the need for researchers to collaborate with National control programmes to conduct genomics surveillance of malaria to inform malaria control and elimination policies.

Introduction: Cervical cancer is a public health issue in Africa with devastating socioeconomic consequences due to the lack of organized screening programs. The success of screening programs depends on the appropriate investigation and management of women who test positive for screening. Colposcopic assessment following positive screening results is a noteworthy issue in Africa.

Background: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental agents that can cause opportunistic pulmonary disease in humans and animals, often misdiagnosed as tuberculosis (TB). In this study, we describe the cases of NTM identified during the first national anti-TB drug resistance survey conducted in Mali and explore associated risk factors.
Methods: Sputum was collected from people presenting for pulmonary TB diagnosis from April to December 2019, regardless of age.

Apple proliferation is among the most important diseases in European fruit production. Early and reliable detection enables farmers to respond appropriately and to prevent further spreading of the disease. Traditional phenotyping approaches by human observers consider multiple symptoms, but these are difficult to measure automatically in the field.

Introduction: Cancer is the primary cause of death globally, and despite the significant advancements in treatment and survival rates, it is still stigmatized in many parts of the world. However, there is limited public health research on cancer stigma among the general female population in Nepal. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of cancer stigma and its associated factors in this group.

This paper advances our understanding of the relationship between climate change and ideal fertility in Sahelian West Africa by exploring sources of variation in that relationship. Using an integrated dataset of Demographic and Health Surveys with monthly rainfall and temperature data, the analyses model dimensions of prospective ideal fertility for young, childless men and women in Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and Nigeria. Temperature, particularly in the arid climate zone, is shown to have a positive effect on ideal fertility.

In search of novel natural product-based fungicides,twenty-four cuminic acid derivatives containing thiourea group were synthesized and characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and HRMS spectra. The anti-fungi/oomycete activity bioassay showed that the some of the title compounds displayed moderate to good anti-fungi activity against Botryosphaeria dothidea (B. dothidea), Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (S.

Introduction: Neovascular age-related macular degeneration is a global public-health concern, associated with a considerable burden to individuals, healthcare systems, and society. The objective of this study was to understand different perspectives on the challenges associated with the clinical management of neovascular age-related macular degeneration, which could elucidate measures to comprehensively improve clinical care and outcomes.
Methods: A survey was carried out of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration, their providers, and clinic staff in 77 clinics across 24 countries on six continents, from a diverse range of healthcare systems, settings, and reimbursement models.

Mali's food security strategies focus on improving agriculture, water management, and diversifying livelihoods. While initiatives like climate-smart agriculture show promise, challenges like limited resources, market access, and political instability persist. Gender inequalities and reliance on external aid further hinder progress, making it difficult for Mali to build sustainable, self-reliant food systems and ensure long-term resilience.

Background: Currently, a large number of populations are suffering from diabetes mellitus, which significantly increases the burden on public health. Glimepiride is an antidiabetic drug with a shorter half-life (approximately 5 hours), low bioavailability, and first-pass metabolism. Due to these limitations, it is required to maintain a uniform therapeutic level, and it has been chosen as a transdermal drug delivery approach.

Objective: Recently, numerous research studies have concentrated on employing hybrid metaheuristic approaches for the analysis and diagnosis of breast cancer which motivated us to devise a computer-driven diagnostic tool that could aid in improving the precision of clinical decision-making.
Methods: In the present study, an integrated metaheuristic machine learning approach-based predictive model was developed that can classify breast cancer into subgroups using clinicopathological data acquired from tertiary care hospitals or oncological institutes.
Results: Monkey king evolution (MKE) was utilized to refine the hyperparameters of the support vector machine to achieve optimal settings, and genetic algorithm (GA) was used to choose the pertinent clinical and pathological attributes involved in classification before being applied to the support vector machine (SVM) classifier for prediction.
