Mold defects pose a significant risk to the preservation of valuable fine art paintings, typically arising from fungal growth in humid environments. This paper presents a novel approach for detecting and categorizing mold defects in fine art paintings. The technique leverages a feature extraction method called Derivative Level Thresholding to pinpoint suspicious regions within an image.

Conjugate Gradient (CG) methods are widely used for solving large-scale nonlinear systems of equations arising in various real-life applications due to their efficiency in employing vector operations. However, the global convergence analysis of CG methods remains a significant challenge. In response, this study proposes scaled versions of CG parameters based on the renowned Barzilai-Borwein approach for solving convex-constrained monotone nonlinear equations.

Impact of Positive Glucose, Lactose, and Fructose Hydrogen Breath Tests on Symptoms and Quality of Life in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

J Gastroenterol Hepatol

January 2025

Faculty of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Background: Gas production due to fermentation from fructose malabsorption (FM) or lactose malabsorption (LM) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) contribute to the development of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, the impact of the carbohydrate malabsorption, unlike SIBO, is relatively unknown.

Methodology: A multicenter, prospective study of consecutive adults with IBS who underwent a hydrogen breath test (HBT) (glucose, 75 g; lactose, 25 g; or fructose, 25 g) was conducted.

We examined the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and endorsement of honour. We studied the SES-honour link in 5 studies (N = 13,635) with participants recruited in different world regions (the Mediterranean and MENA, East Asian, South-East Asian, and Anglo-Western regions) using measures that tap into various different facets of honour. Findings from these studies revealed that individuals who subjectively perceived themselves as belonging to a higher (vs.

Emotion processing difficulties in ADHD: a Bayesian meta-analysis study.

Eur Child Adolesc Psychiatry

January 2025

Faculty of Psychology, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Despacho 2.36 bis, Calle Juan del Rosal, 10, 28040, Madrid, Spain.

We investigated whether there is an emotional processing deficit in ADHD and whether this only applies to specific emotional categories. In this PRISMA-compliant systematic review based on a pre-registered protocol ( https://osf.io/egp7d ), we searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, ERIC, Scopus and Web of Science databases until 3rd December 2023, to identify empirical studies comparing emotional processing in individuals meeting DSM (version III to 5-TR) or ICD (version 9 or 10) criteria for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and in a non-psychiatric control group.

January 2025

Mathematics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

Climate change and global warming are terms used to describe the variation in the Earth's mean temperature as a result of human activities contributing to the formation of urban heat islands (UHI). One method for determining the temperature of a region is the land surface temperature (LST). The study of LSTs is important and closely related to climate change, as is the provision of convenient living and working conditions in cities, which support economic growth.

As individuals with a cleft lip and palate (CLP) transition into adulthood, they face unique employment challenges related to income, job stability, and fewer career options. This study explored these challenges through two focus group discussions with 19 participants (aged 21-38), primarily women, to understand their employment experiences. Thematic analysis revealed the following three main themes: (1) physical factors, (2) psychosocial factors, and (3) overcoming employment challenges, with nine sub-themes including speech, hearing, appearance, health, childhood experiences, societal expectations, lack of self-confidence, communication improvement, and self-esteem building.

Entropy algorithms are widely applied in signal analysis to quantify the irregularity of data. In the realm of two-dimensional data, their two-dimensional forms play a crucial role in analyzing images. Previous works have demonstrated the effectiveness of one-dimensional increment entropy in detecting abrupt changes in signals.

With the aging population rising, the decline in spatial cognitive ability has become a critical issue affecting the quality of life among the elderly. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal analysis presents substantial potential in spatial cognitive assessments. However, conventional methods struggle to effectively classify spatial cognitive states, particularly in tasks requiring multi-class discrimination of pre- and post-training cognitive states.

Mangroves and mudflats are essential intertidal habitats that support benthic communities, providing critical feeding grounds for waterbirds. However, the degradation of these habitats due to coastal reclamation poses significant threats to prey availability and waterbird populations along the South est Johor Coast. While most avian research in Johor focuses on forest birds, studies on coastal waterbirds, particularly their feeding ecology, remain scarce.
