Arsenic is associated with lung disease and experimental models suggest that arsenic-induced degradation of the chloride channel CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) is a mechanism of arsenic toxicity. We examined associations between arsenic exposure, sweat chloride concentration (measure of CFTR function), and pulmonary function among 285 adults in Bangladesh. Participants with sweat chloride ≥ 60 mmol/L had higher arsenic exposures than those with sweat chloride < 60 mmol/L (water: median 77.

Providing Survivorship Care for a Young Adult With a History of Blood Cancer.

J Adolesc Health

December 2024

Reid R. Sacco Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Program, Tufts Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts; Division of Hematology/Oncology, Tufts Medical Center Cancer Center, Boston, Massachusetts; Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies, Tufts Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts.

Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with a history of cancer are at an increased risk for late effects from their cancer treatment and have higher rates of long-term morbidity and mortality compared to their age-matched peers. As a result, this vulnerable population needs attentive follow-up care, end-organ surveillance, and secondary cancer screening; however, a history of cancer can often become buried on a problem list or not addressed at all. This case report illustrates an AYA survivor of classic Hodgkin lymphoma who relocates to a new city and establishes care with a new primary care provider (PCP).

Objectives: Fenestrated-branched endovascular technology (F/B-EVAR) is increasingly used to repair complex aortic aneurysms. While reintervention, morbidity and mortality after F/B-EVAR have been well-characterized, studies on patient-reported quality of life (QOL) after F/B-EVAR have been limited in their use of non-specific instruments and measures. We report on disease-specific QOL in patients that underwent F/B-EVAR using a validated QOL survey for aortic aneurysms.

Acute dizziness and vertigo are common emergency department presentations (≈4% of annual visits) and sometimes, a life-threatening diagnosis like stroke is missed. Recent literature reviews the challenges in evaluation of these symptoms and offers guidelines for diagnostic approaches. Strong evidence indicates that when well-trained providers perform a high-quality bedside neurovestibular examination, accurate diagnosis of peripheral vestibular disorders and stroke increases.

Herein, we propose a blueprint for action to completely measure and recognize the care provided by acute and critical care nurses to be incorporated into policy that shapes and supports practice. We address the nature of nurses' work by identifying nine practice domains, hospital practice environment assumptions, and expected outcomes. Nurses' work, as a cross-system process, needs to be included in hospital-based core measures to fully reflect nurses' impact on patient care.
