Steroidogenesis is a set of metabolic reactions where the enzymes play a key role to control the physiological levels of steroids. A deficiency in steroidogenesis induces an accumulation and/or insufficiency of steroids in human blood and can lead to different pathologies. This issue added to the low levels of steroids (pg mL to ng mL) in this biofluid make of their determination an analytical challenge.

Determination of vitamin D levels in human biological specimens has gained a high relevance over the last decades, essentially because low levels have been associated with several biological disorders. In fact, vitamin D deficiency has become a worldwide health concern covering all ages and genders. The storage of biofluids has to be considered for determination of vitamin D and metabolites in order to fully preserve matrices status.

Background: Gonadal steroid hormones have been suggested as the underlying mechanism responsible for the sexual dimorphism observed in metabolic diseases. Animal studies have also evidenced a causal role of the gut microbiome and metabolic health. However, the role of sexual dimorphism in the gut microbiota and the potential role of the microbiome in influencing sex steroid hormones and shaping sexually dimorphic susceptibility to disease have been largely overlooked.

Sex steroids are involved in biological functions that encompass from the complete sexual development of individuals up to the deregulation of metabolic pathways leading to some pathologies. Steroids are present in blood at low concentration levels from pg mL to ng mL. For this reason, a high sensitive and selective method based on gas chromatography-negative chemical ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-NCI-MS/MS) is here proposed to quantify either androgens (androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone, dihydrotestosterone and testosterone), estrogens (estrone and estradiol) and a progestogen (progesterone) in human plasma.

The health benefits of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) are associated to its fatty acids profile (with predominance of oleic acid) and to the minor components that include phenols, among others. Phenols are responsible for the only health claim of olive oil reported in the Commission Regulation (EU) 432/2012. Here, we have applied a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method to determine the most abundant phenols included in the health claim (with special emphasis on secoiridoids) in 1239 EVOO samples produced in two consecutive agronomical seasons.

Phenols are responsible for the only health claim of virgin olive oil (VOO) recognized by the European Commission EU 432/2012 and the European Food Safety Authority. In this research, we studied the decrease in the phenolic content of 160 extra VOOs (EVOOs) after 12 months storage in darkness at 20 °C. Phenolic concentration was decreased 42.

In this article, we review de state of the art on the management of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and provide recommendations on diagnosis and treatment. Recent advances in molecular biology have allowed the subclassification of renal tumours into different histologic variants and may help to identify future prognostic and predictive factors. For patients with localized disease, surgery is the treatment of choice with nephron-sparing surgery recommended when feasible.

Phenolic compounds largely contribute to the nutraceutical properties of virgin olive oil (VOO), the organoleptic attributes and the shelf life due to their antioxidant capabilities. Due to the relevance of malaxation in the oil extraction process, we tested the effects of malaxation time on the concentrations of relevant phenolic compounds in VOO, and we evaluated the influence of performing malaxation under vacuum. An increase in malaxation time significantly decreased the concentrations of aglycone isomers of oleuropein and ligstroside but, conversely, increased the oleocanthal and oleacein contents.

Sweat is gaining popularity in clinical metabolomics as this biofluid is non-invasively sampled and its composition is modified by several pathologies. There is a lack of standardized strategies for collection of human sweat. Most studies have been carried out with fresh sweat collected after stimulation.

Professionals belonging to very different areas of expertise are usually involved in research on the cultural heritage. Among the names given to the person in charge of analyses are conservator or material scientist, as the most usual, but never "analytical chemist", despite analytical equipment, obtainment of analytical data and application of chemometrics approaches to obtain analytical results are always involved in their tasks. This article tries to be a call of attention to analytical chemists by showing the different areas within the research on cultural heritage in which they should be involved to provide the necessary analytical information.

Background: Radium-223 dichloride (radium-223) is approved for patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), symptomatic bone metastases, and no visceral disease using a dosing regimen of 6 injections (55 kBq/kg intravenously; 1 injection every 4 weeks). Early results from international, open-label, phase 1/2 study NCT01934790 showed that re-treatment with radium-223 was well tolerated with favorable effects on disease progression. Here we report safety and efficacy findings from 2-year follow-up of the radium-223 re-treatment study.

Vitamin D has been widely determined in clinical trials to elucidate its biochemical involvement in a great number of pathologies. The analysis of vitamin D and its hydroxymetabolites in biofluids such as serum or plasma is a challenging task due to limitations associated to the low concentrations of some metabolites (typically, dihydroxymetabolites), methodological interferences, and the low stability of the compounds. Among these limitations, efforts have been targeted at optimizing instrumental improvements to develop more sensitive and selective methods, while the stability of vitamin D and metabolites has not been exhaustively evaluated.

Despite the evident influence of the cultivar on olive oil composition, few studies have been devoted to exploring the variability of phenols in a representative number of monovarietal olive oils. In this study, oil samples from 80 cultivars selected for their impact on worldwide oil production were analyzed to compare their phenolic composition by using a method based on LC-MS/MS. Secoiridoid derivatives were the most concentrated phenols in virgin olive oil, showing high variability that was significantly due to the cultivar.
