Background: Antimicrobial self-medication and use have significantly increased in the COVID-19 era-increasing antibiotic consumption and resulting in a high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in Africa (AMR). We conducted a narrative review to investigate challenges associated with curbing AMR in a post-COVID-19 setting in Africa, suggesting practical measures applicable for policy-informed implementation.
Method: A narrative review was performed to pinpoint AMR challenges and actions on the African continent.

Dual determination of nitrite and iron was proposed by using a single greener sequential injection (SI) spectrophotometric system employing a simple single aqueous extract from Linn. The extract served as a natural reagent to replace -(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine (NED) of the Griess reagent with nitrite and 1,10-phenanthroline with iron. The color products possessed analytical wavelengths at 430 and 560 nm, respectively.

Background And Aim: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance in hepatitis B virus (HBV) patients is currently based on age/sex/cirrhosis, uses ultrasound abdomen every 6-12 months, and is a resource burden. HCC risk scores have been developed to classify HCC risk for surveillance. The number of HBV patients needing surveillance when HCC risk scores are used may be different from the current recommendation with implications on the resources needed for HCC surveillance.

We describe the diagnosis and treatment of a few Southeast Asian cases of PCACC on the scalp of a 70-year-old Thai female. She presented with a slow-growing, painless, solid to cystic, skin-coloured tumour on her scalp.

The endogenous DNA damage triggering an aging progression in the elderly is prevented in the youth, probably by naturally occurring DNA gaps. Decreased DNA gaps are found during chronological aging in yeast. So we named the gaps "Youth-DNA-GAPs.

Multifunctional nanoparticles with special magnetic and optical properties have been attracting a great deal of attention due to their important applications in the bioanalytical and biomedical fields. In this study, we report the fabrication of biocompatible magneto-fluorescence nanoparticles consisting of carbon dots (CDots) and silica-coated cobalt-manganese nanoferrites (CoMnFeO) (CoMnF@Si@CDots) (MagSiCDots) by a facile hydrothermal method. The as-prepared MagSiCDots have a particle size of 100-120 nm and show a negative zeta potential of -35.

A visual colorimetric rapid screening system based on a lateral flow device for simultaneous detection and differentiation between influenza A and B nucleoprotein as a model was developed. Monoclonal antibodies, specific for either influenza A or B nucleoproteins, were evaluated for their reactivities and were used as targeting ligands. With the best antibody pairs selected, the system exhibited good specificity to both viruses without cross reactivity to other closely related respiratory viruses.

Iodine-131 -iodobenzylguanidine (I-IBG) has been utilized as a standard treatment to minimize adverse side effects by targeting therapies to bind to the norepinephrine transporter (NET) expressed on 90% of neuroblastoma cells. However, only a minority of patients who receive I-IBG radiotherapy have clinical responses, and these are usually not curative. In this study, novel ligand-conjugated gold nanoparticles (GNPs) based on IBG were synthesized and evaluated biologically with neuroblastoma cells .

Introduction: The water-soluble mangosteen pericarp extract's (WME) effect was investigated in Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Methods: The participants received 4 mg/kg/day of WME for 24 weeks (low dose, n = 33), 4 mg/kg/day for 12 weeks and then 8 mg/kg/day for 12 weeks (high dose, n = 33); or a placebo (n = 42). The outcomes were neuropsychiatric test scores, safety, tolerability, and the blood 4-hydroxynonenal level.

Even though tuberculosis-immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS) is usually found in HIV-positive patients receiving antiviral treatment, it can also occur in HIV-negative patients especially if they have risk factors. We report a unique case of TB-IRIS in an immunocompetent child presenting with new onset of pleuritic chest pain after receiving anti-TB drugs. TB-IRIS should be considered as a differential diagnosis in case of clinical deterioration or appearance of new typical lesions despite appropriate anti-TB treatment for more than 2 weeks in the absence of persistently active TB or any other alternative causes.

Background: Emicizumab is a subcutaneously administered humanized, bispecific, monoclonal antibody approved for prophylaxis in people with hemophilia A.
Methods: HAVEN 5 (NCT03315455) is a randomized, open-label, phase 3 study of individuals aged ≥12 years with severe hemophilia A without factor VIII (FVIII) inhibitors, or hemophilia A of any severity with FVIII inhibitors, across the Asia-Pacific region. Participants were randomly assigned (2:2:1) to receive emicizumab 1.
In this paper, the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS) sought to provide practice guidance on AF screening based on recent evidence, with specific considerations relevant to the Asia-Pacific region. A key recommendation is opportunistic screening for people aged ≥65 years (all countries), with systematic screening to be considered for people aged ≥75 years or who have additional risk factors (all countries).

The association of movement disorders (MDs) with musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders is observed in two principal scenarios. First, MDs patients may present with MSK issues. This phenomenon is primarily observed in parkinsonian syndromes, but may also be seen in patients with dystonia, Tourette syndrome, and some gene-related MDs.

Objectives: To report a case series of VITT following ChAdOx1 n-CoV-19 in Thailand and to estimate the incidence of VITT among Asian countries.
The prevalence of dyslipidaemia has been increasing in the Asia-Pacific region and this is attributed to dietary changes and decreasing physical activity. While there has been substantial progress in dyslipidaemia therapy, its management in the region is hindered by limitations in awareness, adherence and healthcare costs. The Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology (APSC) developed these consensus recommendations to address the need for a unified approach to managing dyslipidaemia.

Family members play a vital role in both helping and undermining diabetes mellitus selfmanagement practices. This qualitative study aimed to explore the potentially unmet needs of family function to support diabetes self-management (DSM) practices. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted among different key informants, including uncontrolled T2DM patients, caretakers and healthcare providers (HCPs) at community health centres.

It is unclear whether the sustained pattern of AF itself is prognostic or if it is confounded by underlying comorbidities. Here, we tested the association between the temporal patterns of AF and the risks of ischemic stroke and all-cause mortality.

We report a case of mediastinal lymphatic venous malformations (LVM) in a 11-year-old boy who presented with chest pain after jumping into a swimming pool, with review of the literature. A superior mediastinal mass was incidentally found from the chest x-ray. Chest computed tomography revealed a large heterogenous mass at the left-sided mediastinum containing fat, minimal enhancing solid portion, non-enhancing cystic portion and calcification.

At the 2019 annual meeting of the Vivax Working Group of the Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network, participants took part in a roundtable discussion to identify further evidence required to introduce these new tools into policy and practice. Key gaps identified were accuracy and reliability of glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase deficiency tests, health system capacity, and feasibility and cost effectiveness of novel treatment strategies in routine clinical practice.
