Measurement of craniofacial parameters plays an important role in sex determination in forensic science. The present study was done using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans to evaluate the morphologic structure of the frontal sinuses and compare it with the width of nasal, cranial, maxillary and mandibular width which might help us in sex determination. A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted using 142 full field of view (FOV) scans of patients archived from the department.

Background: Out of all traumas, dentoalveolar trauma occurs quite frequently and is commonly linked to avulsion injuries. Of all severe lesions to the permanent dentition, tooth avulsion accounts for 1%-16% of cases. The extraoral dry time and the storage medium in which the tooth is stored and its capacity to promote cell viability are two important variables influencing the prognosis of an avulsed tooth following replantation.

Objective: To determine whether odontometric parameters using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) would aid in sex estimation by assessing sexual dimorphism of odontometric parameters.

Material And Methods: The focused question was whether there is sexual dimorphism in linear and volumetric odontometric parameters when assessed using CBCT. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed to conduct a systematic search until June 2022 in all major databases.

Oral health is vital for the general well-being, overall body health and the quality of life throughout our lifetime. Most of the oral diseases and conditions are largely related to the maintenance of oral hygiene, lacking that people suffer from diverse oral diseases at different times in their life. With greater life expectancy, the individuals have teeth involved with periodontal diseases that would not only require professional care but also home gum care for them to last a lifetime.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of prebreakfast tooth brushing (PrBTB) and postbreakfast tooth brushing (PoBTB) with or without a prebrushing rinse in caries prevention through the estimation of count.

Materials And Methods: Sixty consenting dental students were divided into three age-matched groups of 20 each and instructed to follow prebreakfast, postbreakfast tooth brushing, and prebreakfast rinsing plus PoBTB using the Bass technique. Plaque samples were collected at the start and at the end of every quarter for a total of 6 quarters (18 months) for the evaluation of colony-forming unit (CFU) counts.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a rising concern in clinical dentistry that causes pain and discomfort and negatively affects the quality of life of patients. Indian Society of Periodontology conducted a nationwide survey, involving 3000 dentists in December 2020, which revealed significant knowledge gaps regarding DH, viz., under-diagnosis, incorrect differential diagnosis, and treatment strategies/recommendations for the management of DH patients in daily clinical practice.

Background: Edentulism is a debilitating and irreversible condition. It is often accompanied by compromises in the surrounding joint's range of motion and changes in the posture of the head. The natural head position is maintained by a balanced tension between cranio-cervical bones, myofacial structures and the dental occlusion.

Introduction: The etiological factors of periodontal diseases are the habitation of dysbiotic bacteria, absence of beneficial bacteria, and susceptibility of the host. Irresolute pattern in the periodontal diseases pathogenesis leads to the evolution of novel antimicrobial therapy.

Objective: The objective of the study is to assess and compare the competency of locally delivered probiotic paste with chlorhexidine gel as a supplement to scaling and root planing (SRP) in chronic periodontitis patients.

Concurrent autoimmune orofacial lesions: A rare occurrence!

J Oral Maxillofac Pathol

March 2022

Department of General Surgery, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, India.

Autoimmune disorders occur either as a solitary lesion or in pairs, but it is unusual to find two autoimmune disease lesions in the oral cavity in a single patient, who has been previously treated for psoriasis. We present the case of a 30-year-old male who presented with complaints of severe burning in the oral cavity. Examination revealed the presence of co-occurrence of vitiligo with oral lichen planus with a history of psoriasis and was managed conservatively with good response to treatment.

Introduction: Formalin is the most commonly used fixative which enables for long-term storage of specimens and preserves morphologic features allowing the microscopic evaluation for future research analysis. Archival collections of the tissue serve as a reliable tool for diagnostic research purpose. They have an important role in on-going patient care, allows for evaluation of recurrent cases for diagnostic purpose and rare case specimens can also be used as an educational tool as well as for further biomedical research purposes.

Introduction: Tissues submitted for histopathological diagnoses are routinely fixed in formaldehyde fixative which facilitates tissue storage for the extended period of time for further investigation or research purpose. The literature has reliable data relating to immunohistochemistry and molecular studies done using tissue fixed in formalin for longer duration and in paraffin-embedded tissue blocks. We have attempted to evaluate staining adequacy of archival specimens using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and trichrome stains.

Pathologists have been using their tool of trade, "the microscope," since the early 17 century, but now diagnostic pathology or tissue-based diagnosis is characterized by its high specificity and sensitivity. Technological telecommunication advances have revolutionized the face of medicine, and in pursuit of better health-care delivery, telepathology has emerged. Telepathology is the practice of diagnostic pathology performed at a distance, with images viewed on a video monitor rather than directly through the (light) microscope.

Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Mahe Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Pondicherry University, Puducherry, India.

Clinical presentation of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) along with other pathologies of the jaw such as ameloblastoma, and ossifying fibroma is well documented. However, the simultaneous occurrence of OKC with lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) is very rare. We present a clinical scenario where there was concurrent presentation of OKC with LPC.

Recent Advances in Dental Hard Tissue Remineralization: A Review of Literature.

Int J Clin Pediatr Dent

January 2019

Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Mahe Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Mahe, Puducherry, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Dental caries development is a cyclical process involving both demineralization and remineralization, not just a one-way deterioration.
  • The remineralization process helps restore minerals to damaged teeth using calcium and phosphate ions from saliva, leading to stronger hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystals.
  • Recent research focuses on biomimetic materials that can help regenerate apatite crystals in demineralized areas, showing promising clinical outcomes.
