Department of Community Medicine, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV), Deemed to be University, Puducherry, India.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the agreement between intraocular pressure (IOP) measured with a scleral Schiotz tonometer and the more commonly used Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT).
  • It involved 155 patients, measuring IOP through both methods, and analyzed factors like age and central corneal thickness to see their impact on IOP readings.
  • Results indicated that the scleral measurements aligned well with GAT values, suggesting that scleral tonometry could serve as a reliable alternative for measuring IOP in clinical settings.

Background And Objectives: Colorectal lesions can present as a mass or as focal or diffuse thickening of the colon wall and may also be associated with abnormalities in the perienteric region. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) enables simultaneous imaging of both extracolonic structures and the gut wall. It is instrumental in assessing tumor extent, detecting pericolic dissemination, including lymph node involvement, and identifying metastases.

Background: Acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI) and acute diarrheal disease (ADD) are the leading causes of mortality in children globally. There is emerging evidence of an association between maternal hypovitaminosis D and ALRI/ADD during infancy.

Objective: To determine whether maternal hypovitaminosis D (25(OH)D [<20 ng/ml] during late pregnancy is associated with increased risk of ALRI/ADD in their offspring during infancy.

Background: Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR) are one of the essential causes of hospital admissions and pose a significant clinical and economic burden on the healthcare system. The Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Centre (AMC) in JIPMER functioning under the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) plays a vital role in ensuring medication safety by routinely detecting and monitoring ADRs. Hence, this study aimed to assess the characteristics of ADR reported from 2010 to 2020 in AMC JIPMER and to detect signals, if any.

Caudal epidural catheters threaded to the thoracic levels are increasingly utilized in infants undergoing thoracic and abdominal surgery, compared to lumbar or thoracic epidural techniques. Estimating catheter length traditionally relies on anatomical landmarks, but the lack of spine ossification in infants makes ultrasonography a valuable and noninvasive tool. We present 3 cases where real-time ultrasonography facilitated caudal to thoracic epidural catheter placement in infants undergoing thoraco-abdominal surgeries.

Introduction: Acute appendicitis (AA) is a prevalent cause of abdominal pain, and accurate diagnosis is critical to prevent complications such as perforation. While ultrasound (USG) is often the first imaging modality, its limitations necessitate alternative approaches, particularly in cases where USG results are negative.

Objectives And Aims: This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography (CT) in identifying appendicitis in patients presenting with negative USG findings.

  • In emergency situations, airway management is crucial, with endotracheal intubation being the standard method for unconscious patients, allowing for effective ventilation and removal of secretions.
  • Supraglottic airways, such as the intubating laryngeal mask airway (ILMA), offer advantages like quicker insertion and less reliance on paralysis, making them useful as a backup or in difficult scenarios.
  • This study aims to test the ILMA's effectiveness in prehospital settings, particularly when access around the patient's head is limited, and evaluates a new handle design for easier insertion from any angle.

Introduction Femoral head fractures, specifically Pipkin Type I and Type II, are uncommon injuries often linked with posterior hip dislocations. Management strategies for these fractures range from conservative treatments to various surgical procedures, with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) being a notable option. The surgical approach for ORIF varies, and due to the rarity of the injury, a standardized management protocol is lacking.
