Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the acceptability and usability of HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits in India, finding that 97% of eligible participants accepted the kits and 95% found them easy to use and interpret.
  • Participants largely preferred HIVST for future testing, with 88% indicating interest, and a significant portion (69%) willing to pay for the kits, although most preferred to pay less than $1.20.
  • Out of those who tested positive using HIVST, 89% were linked to confirmatory testing, resulting in a high rate of HIV positive confirmations and successful initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Background: In large supplementary feeding programs for children, it is challenging to create and sustain contextual, acceptable, nutritionally complete, and diverse supplemental foods. For example, the Indian Supplementary Nutrition Program (SNP) supplements the dietary intake of children, pregnant and lactating women, and severely acutely malnourished (SAM) children by offering dry take home rations (THRs) or hot cooked meals (HCMs) across India, but an optimization tool is necessary to create local contextual recipes for acceptable and nutritionally adequate products.

Objectives: This study aimed to create a linear programming (LP) model to optimize diverse food provisions for a SNP to meet its program guidelines, using locally available foods, within budgetary allocations.

Background: Perioperative fluid management is critical in neurosurgery as over perfusion can lead to brain edema whereas under perfusion may lead to brain hypoperfusion or ischemia. We aimed to determine the effectiveness of intraoperative goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) in patients undergoing intracranial surgeries.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE, Cochrane, and PubMed databases and forward-backward citations for studies published between database inception and February 22, 2024.

Ann Surg Oncol

November 2024

Department of Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Surgery, Department of Surgical Oncology, Tata Memorial Hospital, Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

Background: 'Textbook Outcome' (TO) represents an effort to define a standardized, composite quality benchmark based on intraoperative and postoperative endpoints. This study aimed to assess the applicability of TO as an outcome measure following liver resection for hepatic neoplasms from a low- to middle-income economy and determine its impact on long-term survival. Based on identified perioperative predictors, we developed and validated a nomogram-based scoring and risk stratification system.

Introduction: Biologics like growth factors, stem cells, and platelet-rich plasma show potential in stimulating cartilage regrowth and reducing inflammation. By synthesizing preclinical and clinical studies, this study offers insights into how these biologics work and their effectiveness in treating knee osteoarthritis.

Methods And Materials: Twenty-four participants with knee osteoarthritis (Kellgren - Lawrence grade II or III) were enrolled after obtaining consent.

  • Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy shows promise for improving healing in complex wounds, as evaluated in a decade-long study at a tertiary care center using the new STARS protocol.
  • The research involved a two-phase approach, including initial PRP development and the application of STARS, measuring outcomes like wound healing rates and infection control.
  • Results indicated high effectiveness, with 97.7% of treated patients achieving infection control and minimal scarring, supporting PRP's integration into modern wound care strategies.

Background: Over the past decades, the increasing incidence of recurrent dermatophytosis associated with terbinafine-resistant Trichophyton has posed a serious challenge in management of dermatophytosis. Independent reports of failure of treatment and high minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of antifungals are available, but data correlating MIC and clinical outcomes is still sparse. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate the outcomes of systemic treatment of dermatophytosis and its correlation with MIC of the etiological agents isolated from such patients.

Management of an Intracanal Separated Instrument in the Lower Right First Molar: A Case Report.

Cureus

June 2024

Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Shri. Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Medical and Rural Development Foundation's Dental College and Hospital, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Ahmednagar, IND.

Separating an endodontic instrument is one of the most frequent errors during a root canal treatment. If endodontic instruments get separated, it could hinder disinfection and prevent access to the apical portion of the root. It compromises the success of the treatment by impeding the proper debris removal from the canal.

Background: Co-existing iron deficiency in patients of sickle cell disease (SCD) and trait may worsen anemia, and adversely affect neuro-cognitive development and growth. Determining a cut-off below which Mean corpuscular Volume (MCV) can predict iron deficiency in SCD patients can preclude use of more expensive test serum ferritin.

Aims: This study was conducted to determine the diagnostic accuracy of low MCV in detecting iron deficiency compared to serum ferritin levels in patients with SCD.
