Introduction The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is a specialized area for treating critically ill infants and children. However, some of these children may experience poor outcomes, including death. However, it is necessary to predict the prognosis for critically ill patients as early as possible to commence triage as well as an early and effective intervention to prevent mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study examined the expression of p53 and E-cadherin in a group of 50 confirmed UC cases, using immunohistochemical methods to identify correlations with tumor grade and clinicopathological features.
  • * Results showed that high-grade UC was prevalent and associated with low E-cadherin expression, indicating a potential relationship between reduced E-cadherin and tumor invasiveness, while elevated p53 was observed in all cases, suggesting its role in cancer progression.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study in India found that many pregnant women had low vitamin D levels, which may negatively impact the birth weight of their newborns.
  • - The study showed a significant positive correlation between maternal vitamin D levels and infant birth weight, indicating that lower maternal levels are linked to lower birth weights in infants.
  • - Results also suggested that higher maternal vitamin D levels correspond to higher vitamin D levels in newborns, but more research is needed to fully understand these relationships alongside other factors like nutrition and lifestyle.

Cranial prostheses are frequently required for patients with cranial defects secondary to trauma, decompressive craniectomy, or other pathologies. When the resected or craniotomized bone cannot be reused, cranioplasty with artificial materials offers both aesthetic and protective benefits. However, high-end custom-made options, like polyether ether ketone or titanium prostheses, are expensive and not widely available.

Pancreatic cancer is a rare but lethal cancer due to its biologically aggressive nature, advanced stage at the time of diagnosis, and poor response to oncologic therapies. The risk of pancreatic cancer is significantly higher to 5% in certain high-risk individuals with inherited genetic susceptibility. Screening for pancreatic cancer in these individuals from high-risk groups can help with the early detection of pancreatic cancer as well as the detection of precursor lesions leading to early surgical resection and improved overall outcomes.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) has the highest mortality rate among men and is the second highest among women under fifty, with incidence and mortality rates rising in younger populations. Studies indicate that up to one-third of patients diagnosed before fifty have a family history or genetic factors, highlighting the need for earlier screening. Contrariwise, diagnosis in healthy subjects through screening strategies enables early-stage detection of the tumor and better clinical outcomes.

  • Dengue is a serious viral disease, and Toll-like receptors (TLR), particularly TLR3, are crucial for the body's immune response against it.
  • The study examined how a specific genetic variation (single nucleotide polymorphism) in the TLR3 gene affects susceptibility to dengue encephalitis (DE) among patients.
  • Results indicated that a certain genotype (Phe/Phe) was significantly more common in DE patients compared to those without neurological symptoms, but this genetic variation did not influence mortality within one month.*

Sweet or Not? Azathioprine-Induced Sweet Syndrome Mimicking Erythema Nodosum in a Patient With Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

ACG Case Rep J

April 2024

Department of Medicine and Division of Gastroenterology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA.

This case report highlights the clinical challenge and need to distinguish Sweet syndrome and erythema nodosum (EN) in a 50-year-old woman with newly initiated azathioprine for inflammatory bowel disease. While she initially presented with clinical features concerning for drug-induced Sweet syndrome, a subsequent histopathological examination confirmed early-stage EN. Both Sweet syndrome and EN share common triggers and therapeutic responses, but have distinctive clinical characteristics.

Background: Lower limb trauma in emergency settings often leads to pain management challenges. Traditional methods, primarily non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioids, have limitations. This study explores the efficacy of epidural analgesia in emergency for lower limb trauma patients (ELETRA) as an alternative for managing pain in lower limb trauma patients upon arrival in emergency care.

December 2023

Division of Pediatric Urology, Department of Urology and Renal Transplantation, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, 226014, India. Electronic address:

Introduction: Mini PCNL has gained popularity in adult patients due to reduction in the complication rate with comparable stone free rate. There is paucity of level 1 evidence regarding the benefit of mini PCNL in the pediatric group.

Objective: We performed a randomised study to compare mini PCNL (mPCNL) with standard PCNL (sPCNL) for the management of renal calculi in patients less than 18 years of age in terms of safety, efficacy, and stone-free rate (SFR).

Background And Objective: Naftifine, an allylamine, is highly effective against tinea pedis and exhibits relatively greater affinity to skin and nail beds, possibly due to its high lipophilicity. To study the efficacy and safety of naftifine 2% gel in an Indian population, a phase III multicentre double-blind, comparative, parallel-group study was conducted in comparison with miconazole 2% gel in patients with interdigital tinea pedis, with mild to moderate symptoms.

Patients And Methods: Patients presenting with mild to moderate signs and symptoms of interdigital tinea pedis and mycologically confirmed tinea infection were randomised to either naftifine hydrochloride 2% gel (n = 112) or miconazole 2% gel (n = 112) in 1:1 ratio.

A rare neuromuscular condition known as congenital myasthenia gravis (CMG) affects some people from birth or very soon after. It results in fatigue and muscle weakness because of genetic abnormalities that interfere with the neuromuscular junction's ability to function, where the nerves and muscles connect. Even among those who have the same genetic mutation, the severity of CMG symptoms might differ considerably.
