Lean alloy (low alloyed) is beneficial for long-term sustainable development of metal materials. Creating a nanocrystalline microstructure is a desirable approach to improve biodegradability and mechanical properties of lean biomedical Mg alloy, but it is nearly impossible to realize. In the present study, the bulk nanocrystalline Mg alloy (average grain size: ~70 nm) was successfully obtained by hot rolling process of a lean Mg-2wt.

Microstructural design was a long-term sustainable development method to improve the biodegradability and mechanical properties of low alloyed biomedical Mg alloys. In this study, the microstructural features (including grain size, deformation twin, deformed grains, sub-grains, and recrystallized grains) of the MZ2 ((Mg-2Zn (wt%)) alloy were controlled by different single-passed rolling reductions at high temperature. Besides the effect of grain size, we found that deformation twins and deformed grains influenced corrosion performance.

Magnesium alloys attract attention as degradable implant materials due to their adjustable corrosion properties and biocompatibility. In the last few decades, especially wrought magnesium alloys with enhanced mechanical properties have been developed, with the main aim of increasing ductility and formability. Alloying and processing studies allowed demonstrating the relationship between the processing and the microstructure development for many new magnesium alloys.

The impact of precompression, thermal treatment and its combination on the deformation behaviour of an extruded Mg-Zn-Ca (ZX10) alloy was studied with respect to a varied average grain size. The Hall-Petch plot was used to highlight the impact in a wide grain size interval. The initial texture of the wrought alloy was characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Considering the excellent biocompatibility of magnesium (Mg) alloys and their better mechanical properties compared to polymer materials, a wrought MgZnCa alloy with low contents of Zn (0.7 wt%) and Ca (0.6 wt%) (ZX11) was developed by twin roll casting (TRC) technology as potential biodegradable bone plates.

Aqueous Mg battery technology holds significant appeal, owing to the availability of raw materials, high power densities and the possibility of fast mechanical recharge. However, Mg batteries have so far been prone to decreased capacity due to self-corrosion of the anodes from the electrochemical redeposition of impurities, such as Fe, which results in parasitic cathodically active sites on the discharging anode. This work demonstrates that by adding Fe-complexing agents like Tiron or salicylate to the aqueous electrolyte of an Mg battery, it was possible to prevent the redeposition of Fe impurities and subsequent self-corrosion of the anode surface, thereby boosting battery performance.

In the present study, the solution and ageing treatments behavior of Mg-RE-Zr-Zn alloy (Elektron21) and its nano-AlN reinforced nanocomposites have been evaluated. The properties of the thermal-treated materials were investigated in terms of Vickers hardness, the area fraction of precipitates, microstructure and phase composition. The solution treatments were performed by treating at 520 °C, 550 °C and 580 °C in argon atmosphere.

In this work the microstructure and degradation behavior of several as-cast alloy compositions belonging to the Mg rich corner of the Mg-Si-Sr system are presented and related. The intermetallic phases are identified and analyzed describing the microstructure evolution during solidification. It is intended in this work to obtain insight in the behavior of the ternary alloys in in vitro tests and to analyze the degradation behavior of the alloys under physiologically relevant conditions.

This article provides a contribution towards the mechanistic understanding of surface phenomena observed during the corrosion of Mg-based substrates particularly in the low anodic polarization range. The concept considers the recent literature explaining cathodic hydrogen evolution from noble acting areas even during global anodic polarization. Heavy metal impurities in the ppm range or intermetallics are always present even in highly pure magnesium.

Background: A variety of materials have been used for bone augmentation, distraction osteotomy, and in post-cancer patients following tumor removal. However, a temporary metal implant that would resorb after successful treatment is a new concept. Magnesium was suggested as a suitable material for these purposes because it is biocompatible, has better mechanical properties than titanium, and stimulates new bone formation.
