Impact of GH Deficiency and Excess on Men Sexual Health and Fertility.

Front Horm Res

November 2024

Endocrinology Unit, "Mario Serio" Department of Experimental and Clinical Biomedical Sciences, University of Florence, Florence, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The hypothalamus-pituitary testis axis and growth hormone (GH) pathways are interconnected, but GH's impact on male sexual function and fertility remains debated due to mixed research findings.
  • GH excess contributes to male sexual health issues, notably causing erectile dysfunction in about 40.2% of cases and impairing fertility by reducing sperm quality, including concentration and motility.
  • GH deficiency may also lead to erectile dysfunction, though its effects on fertility are not well established; overall, GH disorders adversely affect male sexual and general health, with insufficient research on testosterone replacement therapy benefits.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)-and its worse form, metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), characterised by inflammation and liver damage-corresponds to the liver's involvement in metabolic syndrome, which constitutes an economic burden for healthcare systems. However, the biomolecular pathways that contribute to steatotic liver disease are not completely clear. Abnormalities of bone metabolism are frequent in people affected by metabolic liver disease, with reduced bone density and an increased risk of fracture.

Bone quality in endocrine diseases: determinants and clinical relevance.

J Endocrinol Invest

July 2023

Department of Biomedical Sciences, Humanitas University, Via R. Levi Montalcini 4, 20090, Pieve Emanuele, MI, Italy.

Purpose: Bone is one of the main targets of hormones and endocrine diseases are frequent causes of secondary osteoporosis and fractures in real-world clinical practice. However, diagnosis of skeletal fragility and prediction of fractures in this setting could be a challenge, since the skeletal alterations induced by endocrine disorders are not generally captured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurement of bone mineral density (BMD), that is the gold standard for diagnosis of osteoporosis in the general population. The aim of this paper is to review the existing evidence related to bone quality features in endocrine diseases, proposing assessment with new techniques in the future.
