Aquatic herbicides are commonly used to control a variety of non-native plants. One common active ingredient used in commercial herbicide formulations globally is 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Though 2,4-D is used in aquatic ecosystems, no studies have investigated cellular, biochemical, and transcriptional effects or mechanisms of 2,4-D exposure on fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) throughout juvenile development.

Incorporating curriculum to effectively help veterinary students learn how to provide accessible quality care to is needed. The primary aims of this study are to explore how a 2-week rotation at a veterinary medical service-learning clinic (Wisconsin Companion Animal Resources, Education, and Social Services [WisCARES]) improves (a) comfort in working with clients from diverse race and low socioeconomic (SOCI) backgrounds and (2) confidence in leading cases, communication skills, and providing a spectrum of care options. Students were surveyed at five time points pre-rotation: mid-week 1, mid-week 2, end of rotation, and 1-month post.

Klebsiella spp. are gram-negative facultative anaerobic heavily encapsulated bacteria associated with opportunistic and primary infections in a wide range of species. We assessed a series of cases (n=8) of necrosuppurative peritonitis, lymphadenitis, and/or pyelonephritis in wild juvenile raccoons (Procyon lotor) that died under rehabilitator care in New York, New Jersey, and Wisconsin, US, between July 2020 and December 2023, plus a retrospective case of a juvenile raccoon necropsied from New York in August 2011.

Objectives: Prostate inflammation is linked to lower urinary tract dysfunction and is a key factor in chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Autoimmunity was recently identified as a driver of prostate inflammation. Agonists of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), a ligand-activated transcription factor, have been used to suppress autoimmunity in mouse models of colitis, rhinitis, and dermatitis, but whether AHR agonists suppress prostate autoimmunity has not been examined.

Circovirids have a circular single-stranded DNA genome packed into a small icosahedral capsid. They are classified within two genera, Circovirus and Cyclovirus, in the family Circoviridae (phylum Cressdnaviricota, class Arfiviricetes, order Cirlivirales). Over the last five years, a number of new circovirids have been identified, and, as a result, 54 new species have been created for their classification based on the previously established species demarcation criterion, namely, that viruses classified into different species share less than 80% genome-wide pairwise sequence identity.

Amniogenesis, a process critical for continuation of healthy pregnancy, is triggered in a collection of pluripotent epiblast cells as the human embryo implants. Previous studies have established that bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling is a major driver of this lineage specifying process, but the downstream BMP-dependent transcriptional networks that lead to successful amniogenesis remain to be identified. This is, in part, due to the current lack of a robust and reproducible model system that enables mechanistic investigations exclusively into amniogenesis.

Amniogenesis is triggered in a collection of pluripotent epiblast cells as the human embryo implants. To gain insights into the critical but poorly understood transcriptional machinery governing amnion fate determination, we examined the evolving transcriptome of a developing human pluripotent stem cell-derived amnion model at the single cell level. This analysis revealed several continuous amniotic fate progressing states with state-specific markers, which include a previously unrecognized CLDN10 amnion progenitor state.

To describe the diagnosis and successful treatment of systemic francisellosis in a dog. An 11-year-old female spayed Labrador retriever presented for progressive lethargy, hyporexia, and cough. The dog was febrile with a neutrophilia, nonregenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, and had increased activity in serum of liver-derived enzymes.

Following peripheral nerve injury, denervated tissues can be reinnervated via regeneration of injured neurons or collateral sprouting of neighboring uninjured afferents into denervated territory. While there has been substantial focus on mechanisms underlying regeneration, collateral sprouting has received less attention. Here, we used immunohistochemistry and genetic neuronal labeling to define the subtype specificity of sprouting-mediated reinnervation of plantar hindpaw skin in the mouse spared nerve injury (SNI) model, in which productive regeneration cannot occur.

The objective of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of two orally administered doses of tramadol (1 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg) and its metabolite, O-desmethyltramadol (M1) in giant tortoises (, ). Eleven giant tortoises (, ) received two randomly assigned, oral doses of tramadol (either 1 mg/kg or 5 mg/kg), with a washout period of 3 wk between each dose. The half-life (t½) of orally administered tramadol at 1 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg was 11.

Changes in the anterior segment of the eye due to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are not well-characterized, in part due to the lack of a reliable animal model. This study evaluated changes in the anterior segment, including crystalline lens health, corneal endothelial cell density, aqueous humor metabolites, and ciliary body vasculature, in a rat model of T2DM compared with human eyes. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a high-fat diet (45% fat) or normal diet, and rats fed the high-fat diet were injected with streptozotocin intraperitoneally to generate a model of T2DM.

This study evaluated observer variations in the interpretation of radiographic evidence for periodontal disease, tooth resorption, and endodontic disease in dogs. Forty dental radiographs were evaluated for 12 different parameters (periapical destruction of bone, wider than expected root canal, narrower than expected root canal, apical root resorption, loss of alveolar bone, external surface resorption, external replacement resorption, external inflammatory resorption, external cervical root resorption, internal surface resorption, internal replacement resorption, internal inflammatory resorption). Interpretations by 20 veterinary dentists, 10 veterinary dental residents, and 10 veterinary students were analyzed for consistency within groups and between groups by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs [95% CI]).

Background: Proton pump inhibitors can cause diarrhea and a transient increase in fecal dysbiosis index in dogs. It is unknown if concurrent probiotic administration mitigates these effects.
Objective/hypothesis: To assess the fecal Canine Microbial Dysbiosis Index (CMDI), fecal short chain fatty acid (SCFA), and fecal calprotectin concentrations in dogs administered esomeprazole with and without a probiotic.

A 2 yr old female intact flat-coated retriever dog was presented for evaluation of a histologically diagnosed cutaneous Langerhans cell histiocytosis of the muzzle with right mandibular nodal metastasis and suspected prescapular lymph node metastasis. Chemotherapy (lomustine 60 mg/m2 by mouth as a single dose) and glucocorticoid therapy (prednisone ∼20 mg/m2 by mouth every 24 hr) were initiated. Progressive disease occurred 21 days after lomustine administration.
