Waterborne contaminants pose a significant risk to water quality and plant health in agricultural systems. This is particularly the case for relatively small-scale but intensive agricultural operations such as plant production nurseries that often rely on recycled irrigation water. The increasing global demand for plants requires improved water quality and more certainty around water availability, which may be difficult to predict and deliver due to variable and changing climate regimes.

Introgression - the exchange of genetic material through hybridization - is now recognized as common among animal species. The extent of introgression, however, can vary considerably even when it occurs: for example, introgression can be geographically restricted or so pervasive that populations merge. Such variation highlights the importance of understanding the factors mediating introgression.

Electronic address:

Neurodegenerative diseases are a pathologically, clinically and genetically diverse group of diseases characterised by selective dysfunction, loss of synaptic connectivity and neurodegeneration, and are associated with the deposition of misfolded proteins in neurons and/or glia. Molecular studies have highlighted the role of conformationally altered proteins in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and have paved the way for developing disease-specific biomarkers that capture and differentiate the main type/s of protein abnormality responsible for neurodegenerative diseases, some of which are currently used in clinical practice. These proteins follow sequential patterns of anatomical involvement and disease spread in the brain and may also be detected in peripheral organs.

CMFNet: a cross-dimensional modal fusion network for accurate vessel segmentation based on OCTA data.

Med Biol Eng Comput

December 2024

College of Robot Science and Engineering, Northeastern University, Shenyang, 110170, Liaoning, China.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a novel non-invasive retinal vessel imaging technique that can display high-resolution 3D vessel structures. The quantitative analysis of retinal vessel morphology plays an important role in the automatic screening and diagnosis of fundus diseases. The existing segmentation methods struggle to effectively use the 3D volume data and 2D projection maps of OCTA images simultaneously, which leads to problems such as discontinuous microvessel segmentation results and deviation of morphological estimation.

What is the future for dementia with Lewy bodies?

J Neurol

December 2024

Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA, USA.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is the second most common neurodegenerative dementia after Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet it remains under-recognized and frequently misdiagnosed due to heterogenous clinical presentations, the presence of co-pathology, and the lack of specific diagnostic tools. Pathologically, DLB is characterized by the accumulation of misfolded alpha-synuclein (aSyn) aggregates, known as Lewy bodies. Recent advancements have improved in vivo detection of aSyn pathology through techniques such as seed amplification assays, monoclonal antibodies, and positron emission tomography using novel small-molecule ligands.
