Moving from participatory approaches incorporating co-design to co-production in health research involves a commitment to full engagement and partnership with people with lived experience through all stages of the research process-start to finish. However, despite the increased enthusiasm and proliferation of research that involves co-production, practice remains challenging, due in part to the lack of consensus on what constitutes co-production, a lack of guidance about the practical steps of applying this approach in respect to diverse research methods from multiple paradigms, and structural barriers within academia research landscape. To navigate the challenges in conducting co-produced research, it has been recommended that attention be paid to focusing and operationalising the underpinning principles and aspirations of co-production research, to aid translation into practice.

Objective: We aimed at exploring the relationship between functional outcomes in patients on clozapine augmented with antipsychotics in treatment-resistant schizophrenia using standard outcome measures Health of Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS) and Life Skills Profile (LSP-16).

Method: In a cross-sectional study of 83 patients on clozapine treated in a psychiatric rehabilitation hospital, the association between the primary outcome measure, LSP-16 including its subscales, and treatment with antipsychotic augmentation (AA) were analysed using linear regression.

Result: The presence of moderate-to-severe positive symptoms on the HoNOS 6 dichotomised item measure was the only statistically significant predictor of functional impairment as determined by total LSP-16 score.

Background: Urinary incontinence (UI) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are commonly experienced by adult patients in hospitals (inpatients). Although peak bodies recommend that health services have systems for optimal UI and LUTS care, they are often not delivered. For example, results from the 2017 Australian National Stroke Audit Acute Services indicated that of the one-third of acute stroke inpatients with UI, only 18% received a management plan.

Aim: Adults living with severe mental illness experience a greater burden of physical comorbidities and earlier mortality than the general population. Malnutrition, overnutrition, dysphagia, constipation and disordered eating have been observed in this population and can lead to poor nutritional status. Early identification of such conditions may reduce their impact on functional status, quality of life and health outcomes.

Psychiatric hospitalization can cause significant distress for patients. Research has shown that to cope with the stress, patients sometimes resort to self-harm. Given the paucity of research on self-harm among psychiatric inpatients, a better understanding of transdiagnostic processes as predictors of self-harm during psychiatric hospitalization is needed.

Care planning and nonpharmacological interventions in a metropolitan inpatient dual diagnosis service: A retrospective exploratory study.

Int J Ment Health Nurs

October 2020

Mental Health Drug and Alcohol, Northern Sydney Local Health Service, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

In Australia, the terms dual diagnosis and comorbidity are commonly used, often interchangeably, to describe the experience of consumers with both mental health difficulties and difficulties with alcohol and other drug use. Consumers with comorbidity often have complex needs that require comprehensive assessment, multidisciplinary team support, and trauma-focused management. More information about the demographics of consumers admitted with comorbidity, and the documented assessed needs, care, and interventions provided, would provide the foundations for working towards improved quality and continuity of care.
