Objective: Osteoporosis significantly affects older adults by reducing bone mass and increasing fracture risk, thereby impacting morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD), body mass index (BMI), and trabecular bone score (TBS) among middle-aged and older men with or without benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted using health examination data from male participants aged 50-98 years collected at a regional hospital in southern Taiwan.

Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is a major factor contributing to skin photoaging, including the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), collagen breakdown, and overall skin damage. Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) is a polypeptide hormone that regulates dermal survival and collagen synthesis. Echinacoside (Ech), a natural phenylethanoid glycoside, is the most abundant active compound in Cistanches.

Background: Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) is a rare X-linked recessive metabolic disorder caused by mutations in the gene, resulting in hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) deficiency. Early diagnosis is critical for optimizing management and improving outcomes. This study presents a case series of three Taiwanese patients diagnosed at a single medical center.

Objective: Heart rate serves as a critical prognostic factor in heart failure (HF) patients. We hypothesise that elevated heart rate in critically ill HF patients on discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU) could be linked to adverse outcomes.
Design: A single-centre retrospective cohort study.

Background: Patients with terminal illness often experience significant physical and mental suffering. This distress affects the patients themselves, as they endure the pain of their condition and their family members, who are affected by the patient's situation and medical decisions. Furthermore, exploring the patients' and their families' concepts of a "good death" is crucial for reflecting on the value of life and for planning treatment or care models (such as advance care planning).

Melasma is a challenging, acquired hyperpigmentary disorder. The gold standard treatment is Kligman's formulation, which contains hydroquinone, tretinoin, and dexamethasone, but its long-term use is limited by the risk of exogenous ochronosis. Cysteamine, a tyrosinase inhibitor, reduces melanocyte activity and melanin production, showing strong depigmenting effects in patients resistant to Kligman's formulation.

The erythrocyte membrane is highly specialized with ∼one million anion exchanger-1 (AE1) per cell for rapid membrane permeation of HCO3-(aq), as most blood CO2(g) is carried in this hydrated anionic form. People with the GP.Mur blood type have more AE1 on their erythrocyte membrane, and they excrete CO2(g) more efficiently.

Background: Heart failure (HF) management lacks clarity regarding fluid balance strategies, with some studies suggesting potential benefits of liberal fluid intake. This review aims to evaluate both unrestricted and restricted fluid intake, including sodium restriction, in adult HF.
Methods: A thorough search of electronic databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library, identified relevant studies examining fluid intake effects on adult heart failure patients, categorized by liberal or restricted intake, with subgroup analysis on sodium restriction.

The connection between microbial infections and tumor formation is notably exemplified by and its association with gastric cancer (GC) and colorectal cancer (CRC). While early studies hinted at a link between and colorectal neoplasms, comprehensive retrospective cohort studies were lacking. Recent research indicates that individuals treated for infection experience a significant reduction in both CRC incidence and mortality, suggesting a potential role of this infection in malignancy development.

Background And Objective: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is associated with reduced muscle and increased fat mass in patients with prostate cancer. However, the threshold for body composition changes associated with survival during ADT remains unclear. This study aimed to identify body composition change thresholds for all-cause mortality during ADT.

Cutaneous T cell lymphomas (CTCLs), with mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS) as the classic types, are the commonest group of primary cutaneous lymphomas. The diverse clinical manifestation and non-specific histologic findings of early lesions in CTCLs render diagnosis challenging. Treatment modalities also vary and include topical and oral medications, chemotherapy, phototherapy, and radiation therapies.

Background/aims: Thromboembolism (TE) notably increase morbidity and mortality among inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Despite ECCO's 2024 guidelines advocating routine anticoagulant prophylaxis, its application in Asia remains inconsistent due to a lack of regional studies. This research investigates the incidence and predictors of TE during IBD-related hospitalizations in Taiwan, aiming to improve prevention strategies.

Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) is an uncommon cause of fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), which is diagnosed by exclusion and required a high index of suspicion. Secondary AIED, which accompanies other autoimmune diseases, occurs in up to 30% of AIED cases. Secondary AIED is a rare manifestation of paraneoplastic syndrome, and the causal malignancy may be occult initially.

Human skin aging, a complex process influenced by intrinsic aging and extrinsic photoaging, is marked by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause DNA damage, impaired dermal fibroblast function, and wrinkle formation. External stressors, such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation, can trigger cellular senescence. Sirtuin-1 (SIRT1), an NAD-dependent enzyme in the sirtuin family, plays a crucial role in deacetylating p53, thereby inhibiting its nuclear translocation and reducing skin senescence.
