β-Carboline (FG-7142) modulates fear but not anxiety-like behaviour in zebrafish.

The β-Carboline FG-7142 is a partial inverse agonist at the benzodiazepine allosteric site on the GABA-A receptor that induces anxiogenic, proconvulsant, and appetite-reducing effects in many species, including humans. Seizure-kindling effects have been well studied, however anxiogenic properties are relatively unexplored. This study aimed to investigate concentration-dependent effects of FG-7142 on anxiety-like behaviour and fear responses in zebrafish (Danio rerio) using the open-field test (OF) and novel object approach test (NOA).

One Health: Insights from Organizational & Social, Technology Assessment and Human Factors Perspectives.

Biodegradation in oil sands process-affected water: A comprehensive laboratory analysis of the in situ biodegradation of dissolved organic acids.

Oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) is a by-product of the extraction of bitumen, and volumes of OSPW have accumulated across the Alberta oil sands region due to the governments zero-discharge policy. Some dissolved organics in OSPW, including toxic naphthenic acids (NAs), can be biodegraded in oxic conditions, thereby reducing the toxicity of OSPW. While there has been much focus on degradation of NAs, the biodegradation of other dissolved organic chemicals by endogenous organisms remains understudied.

The experiences of international students in a Canadian faculty of nursing: A narrative inquiry study.

Background: In response to the global need for nursing faculty, and nurses in leadership and advanced clinical practice roles, students from different countries come to Canada for their graduate nursing education. The positive reputation and the perceived advantages of the education system are particularly compelling to applicants from the countries located in the Global South. However, these students come from different social, historical, political, cultural, and educational backgrounds that deeply influence their learning experiences in Canada.

Mindfulness Practice Reduces Hair Cortisol, Anxiety and Perceived Stress in University Workers: Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background: Anxiety and stress are common mental health conditions reported by university workers. Practices of mindfulness represent one promising approach as an effective and feasible means to reduce stress, improve mental health and promote well-being; however, there are no clinical trials that have combined long-term stress biomarkers (hair cortisol) and psychometric assessments in a sample of university workers.

Objective: This study investigated the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based program on long-term stress, by measuring hair cortisol concentration and perceived stress and anxiety among workers who were undergoing high levels of stress.

Evaluating knowledge loss over multiple retention intervals can identify deficiencies and inform curricular development.

Nursing students struggle to retain enough anatomical knowledge to meet their entry to practice competencies, but what knowledge is missing and when this occurs has been previously unexplored. A cohort of 80 nursing students were given multiple choice quizzes to assess their anatomical knowledge on 11 different organ systems during their second, third, and fourth year. Results were analyzed in comparison to their first-year examination scores to determine knowledge loss.

Cannabinoid type-2 receptors modulate terpene induced anxiety-reduction in zebrafish.

Terpenes are the most extensive and varied group of naturally occurring compounds mostly found in plants, including cannabis, and have an array of potential therapeutic benefits for pathological conditions. The endocannabinoid system can potently modulate anxiety in humans, rodents, and zebrafish. The 'entourage effect' suggests terpenes may target cannabinoid CB and CB receptors, among others, but this requires further investigation.

The connection between domestic violence and oral health is established, with common oral health issues associated with domestic violence, such as dental trauma, head and neck bruises and injuries as well as facial fractures.

An Integrated Sweat Sensor for Synchronous Detection of Multiple Atherosclerosis Biomarkers.

Atherosclerosis conditions are often assessed in the clinic by measuring blood viscosity, blood flow, and blood lesion levels. In alignment with precision medicine, it is essential to develop convenient and noninvasive approaches for atherosclerosis diagnostics. Herein, an integrated electrochemical sensor was successfully demonstrated for simultaneously detecting cholesterol, transferrin, and K in sweat, all biomarker indicators of atherosclerosis.

Using Dual-Orthogonal Fluoroscopy and CT to Assess the Relationship Between Knee Morphology and Patellar Kinematics in Patients With Patellofemoral Pain.

Introduction: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is one of the most common knee overuse injuries, with studies suggesting PFP as a precursor for early knee osteoarthritis. The etiology of PFP is multi-factorial; however, patellar mal-tracking has been regarded as a primary mechanism. Details of this multi-factorial mechanism have been unclear because of the limitations in evaluating in-vivo, three-dimensional (3D) patellofemoral joint movement during dynamic activities accurately.

Comparison of the Quality of Recovery-15 score in patients undergoing oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery under monitored anesthesia care versus general anesthesia: a prospective quality improvement study.

Purpose: Whether changing the institutional practice from general anesthesia (GA) to monitored anesthesia care (MAC) affects postoperative quality of recovery for oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is currently unknown. We designed this quasi-experimental study to evaluate a quality improvement (QI) initiative instituted in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

Methods: We chose a prospective controlled cohort study design for this QI study, where patients underwent oncoplastic BCS under MAC in one hospital and BCS under GA at another hospital (control).

This study presents a novel approach to the detection of epinephrine, lactate, and cortisol biomarkers in human sweat using molecularly-imprinted polymers (MIP) embedded screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) sensors. The epinephrine and lactate MIP SPCE sensors were fabricated by epinephrine or lactate-imprinted polyaniline co-polymerized with 3-aminophenylboronic acid and gold nanoparticles (PANI-co-PBA/AuNP) selective membrane on a commercial SPCE. The cortisol sensor was comprised of a cortisol-imprinted poly(glycidyl methacryate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly (GMA-co-EGDMA)@AuNP selective membrane deposited on a SPCE.

Innate (natural) colour preference in animals is used for a variety of behavioural neuroscience purposes in many animal models. Method: A mixed methods approach was used for this study. Assessment and recovery of visually guided reaching deficits following cerebellar stroke.

The cerebellum is known to play an important role in the coordination and timing of limb movements. The present study focused on how reach kinematics are affected by cerebellar lesions to quantify both the presence of motor impairment, and recovery of motor function over time.
