Perceptual narrowing typically occurs around 6 months of age, and drastically changes an infant's perception of stimuli such as faces or spoken language according to the frequency with which the infant encounters them. It has already been well established that perceptual narrowing improves the sensitivity of infants to frequently encountered stimuli such as same-race faces and their native language while reducing their sensitivity to other-race faces and non-native languages. However, the effect of perceptual narrowing on the combined perception of face and language stimuli is not well understood.

Resilience among older adults with multimorbidity using the Connor-Davidson scale in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging: health behaviour, socio-economic, and social support predictors.

Objective: Multimorbidity is recognized as a serious health condition faced by a majority of older adults. Research investigating adaptive responses to multimorbidity, termed multimorbidity resilience, has been growing. This paper examines protective and risk factors, with a focus on health behaviours, socio-economic resources, and social support using an established measure of resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale) among older adults, focusing on older persons with two or more concurrent chronic conditions.

Leveraging integrated youth services for social prescribing: a case study of Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario.

Introduction: Integrated youth services (IYS) presents a unique opportunity to adopt social prescribing (SP) strategies within the IYS service model by developing and leveraging a highly connected multidisciplinary network of clinical and community-based service providers to tackle health inequities and enhance service access and outcomes for youth. This paper outlines a case study of Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario (YWHO), Canada, a collective of youth-serving organizations integrated and networked, and operating as a learning health system implementing SP services. The main study objective was to document how YWHO hubs engage in social prescribing through service provision.

Seen but not partisan: Changing expectations of public servants in Westminster systems.

Unlabelled: Much has been written about the changing role of unelected public servants in Westminster systems of government and their relationship with elected officials and the public. However, there are no studies comparing how these three groups perceive the role, and what they expect from public servants. This article provides the findings from three surveys of public servants, politicians and the public in Canada to assess how they view the role of the public servant and how this compares to different conceptions in the academic literature.

Criminogenic and Non-Criminogenic Factors and Their Association With Reintegration Success for Individuals Under Judicial Orders in Canada.

Justice-involved individuals who reach the end of their full prison sentence no longer benefit from the supervision and rehabilitation services offered by probation or parole. Some of these individuals, who have been assessed to be a high risk for sexual and violent reoffending and deemed to pose a significant violence risk in the community if released, are placed on a judicial order in Canada, and police are asked to supervise and manage the risk of these individuals. In the current study, the files of 45 high-risk, justice-involved individuals, who completed their sentences, were released from a Canadian prison into the province of Alberta, and supervised by police under a judicial order, were reviewed for the presence of criminogenic and non-criminogenic needs over the first year of release.

The source craters of the martian meteorites: Implications for the igneous evolution of Mars.

Approximately 200 meteorites come from ~10 impact events on the surface of Mars, yet their pre-ejection locations are largely unknown. Here, we combine the results of diverse sets of observations and modeling to constrain the source craters for several groups of martian meteorites. We compute that ejection-paired groups of meteorites are derived from lava flows within the top 26 m of the surface.

Leveraging genomic load estimates to optimize captive breeding programmes.

Rapid biodiversity loss threatens many species with extinction. Captive populations of species of conservation concern (such as those housed in zoos and dedicated breeding centres) act as an insurance should wild populations go extinct or need supplemental individuals to boost populations. Limited resources mean that captive populations are almost always small and started from few founding individuals.

Automatic deep learning segmentation of the hippocampus on high-resolution diffusion magnetic resonance imaging and its application to the healthy lifespan.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can provide unique contrast and insight into microstructural changes with age or disease of the hippocampus, although it is difficult to measure the hippocampus because of its comparatively small size, location, and shape. This has been markedly improved by the advent of a clinically feasible 1-mm isotropic resolution 6-min DTI protocol at 3 T of the hippocampus with limited brain coverage of 20 axial-oblique slices aligned along its long axis. However, manual segmentation is too laborious for large population studies, and it cannot be automatically segmented directly on the diffusion images using traditional T or T image-based methods because of the limited brain coverage and different contrast.

Penalty Versus Premium: Social Disposition Differentiates Life Satisfaction Among Living-Alone Immigrant and Native-Born Older Adults-Findings From the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA).

Using data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, in this study we provide an alternative explanation for the gap of life satisfaction between living-alone immigrants and Canadian-born older adults. Based on the Big-Five personality traits, we use the latent class analysis to generate two types of social dispositions, social independence and social dependence. With social dispositions taken into account, living alone contributes to life satisfaction in opposite ways for immigrant and Canadian-born older adults, by playing a negative role for the former group and a positive role for the latter.

Cripping and queering gender-based violence prevention: bridging disability justice, queer joy, and consent education.

Although frequently relegated to the periphery in conversations about gender-based violence prevention, the disabling impacts of traumatised subjectivity both affect survivors' abilities to fully participate in sex and contribute to survivors being more than twice as likely to be sexually (re)victimised compared to peers without trauma histories. In this paper, we seek to crip and queer approaches to gender-based violence prevention, particularly consent education, by learning from 2SLGBTQ+ and disabled trauma survivors' affective experiences of queer, crip sexual joy and the radically messy ways in which they establish their own care networks for deeply pleasurable sex through the principles of disability justice. Refusing pathologising understandings of survivors as those who need to be cured, we highlight traumatised subjectivity as emblematic of the ambiguity and ambivalence inherent in sex as well as the possibilities for caring, consensual sex that moves beyond the concept of consent employed in colonial, neoliberal capitalist societies' binary (Yes/No) consent laws.

Assessing the risk of climate maladaptation for Canadian polar bears.

The Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the world, threatening the persistence of many Arctic species. It is uncertain if Arctic wildlife will have sufficient time to adapt to such rapidly warming environments. We used genetic forecasting to measure the risk of maladaptation to warming temperatures and sea ice loss in polar bears (Ursus maritimus) sampled across the Canadian Arctic.

Public participation in healthcare students' education: An umbrella review.

Background: An often-hidden element in healthcare students' education is the pedagogy of public involvement, yet public participation can result in deep learning for students with positive impacts on the public who participate.

Objective: This article aimed to synthesize published literature reviews that described the impact of public participation in healthcare students' education.

Search Strategy: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, ERIC, PsychINFO, CINAHL, PubMed, JBI Database of Systematic Reviews and Implementation Reports, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects and the PROSPERO register for literature reviews on public participation in healthcare students' education.

Sex, drugs, and zebrafish: Acute exposure to anxiety-modulating compounds in a modified novel tank dive test.

This study investigated the effects of anxiogenic and anxiolytic drugs on zebrafish (Danio rerio) behaviour using a modified novel tank dive test with higher walls and a narrower depth. Zebrafish were administered chondroitin sulfate, beta-carboline, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), ethanol, and beta-caryophyllene, and their behaviours were evaluated for geotaxis, swimming velocity, and immobility. Both anxiogenic and anxiolytic compounds generally increased bottom-dwelling behaviour, suggesting that the tank's modified dimensions significantly influence zebrafish responses.

Airborne DNA reveals predictable spatial and seasonal dynamics of fungi.

Fungi are among the most diverse and ecologically important kingdoms in life. However, the distributional ranges of fungi remain largely unknown as do the ecological mechanisms that shape their distributions. To provide an integrated view of the spatial and seasonal dynamics of fungi, we implemented a globally distributed standardized aerial sampling of fungal spores.

A variant on the CREST iMTD algorithm for noncovalent clusters of flexible molecules.

Conformational ensemble generation and the search for the global minimum conformation are important problems in computational chemistry. In this work, a variant on the conformer-rotamer ensemble sampling tool (CREST) iterative metadynamics (iMTD) algorithm designed for determining structural ensembles and energetics of noncovalent clusters of flexible molecules is presented. We term this new algorithm a low-energy diversity-enhanced variant on CREST, or LEDE-CREST.

The objective of this systematic realist review is to explain how, why, for whom, and under which circumstances community group-based physical activity programs work for immigrant older adults. The initial program theory was developed using prior research, team expertise, social cognitive theory, and knowledge user consultations.
