MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in the early diagnosis of autoinflammatory diseases, with Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) being a notable example. HS, an autoinflammatory skin disease affecting the pilosebaceous unit, profoundly impacts patients' quality of life. Its hidden nature, with insidious initial symptoms and patient reluctance to seek medical consultation, often leads to a diagnostic delay of up to 7 years.

Augmentation index and pulse wave velocity are markers of vascular compromise and independent predictors of cardiovascular risk and mortality. While the link between shift work and heightened cardiovascular risk is established, the intricate genesis of early cardiovascular outcomes in shift workers remains incompletely understood. However, there is evidence that sleep duration plays a role in this regard.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how common elevated mechanical power (MP) values are in critically ill patients on invasive mechanical ventilation.
  • It analyzed data from 372 patients across 133 Critical Care Units, revealing higher MP in pressure-controlled (PC) ventilation compared to volume-controlled (VC) ventilation, but no significant difference in the prevalence of high MP (>17J/min) between the two methods.
  • The findings suggest a notable number of patients may face the risk of high MP, indicating a need for careful monitoring in ventilated patients, despite the lack of a significant difference in high MP prevalence based on the ventilation type.

Introduction: In the search for molecular markers that aid in the early diagnosis and treatment of various human diseases, many studies have focused on changes in genes, their transcripts and protein products. Recent advances in proteomic methodologies, such as mass spectrometry (MS), generate new opportunities to obtain relevant information on normal and abnormal processes that occur in many important cell pathways. The human eye is a highly specialized and compartmentalized organ, and the interpretation of molecular biomarkers helps to evaluate its cellular structure, providing a broader molecular understanding that corroborates in the pathophysiology of ophthalmological diseases, with marked improvements in their diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.

This study was conducted to characterize the morphology and morphometry of follicles containing multiple oocytes (MOFs) and determine the association with the FecG mutation in Santa Inês ewes. Based on the genotypes, 65 ewes were characterized as being homozygous wild-type (n = 25; FecG), heterozygous mutant (n = 27, FecG), and homozygous mutant (n = 13, FecG). The variables evaluated were follicle developmental stage, number of oocytes per follicle, morphology, and morphometry of MOFs.

In human neonates, when the umbilical cord is kept intact postpartum, blood continues to flow to the neonate, but this procedure might be difficult in dogs owing to a shorter umbilical cord and several neonates in a litter. However, it might be possible to detach the placenta and keep the umbilical cord intact, allowing residual blood to flow to the puppies. This study compared the effects of clamping versus no clamping of the umbilical cord in dogs born by cesarean section on neonatal vitality.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of a zinc chloride (ZnCl2) solution (2% wt), incorporated into a two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system (AS), on microtensile bond strength (µTBS) to caries-affected dentin (CAD).

Methods: First, the degree of conversion (DC) of the AS with and without the ZnCl2 solution was evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Second, beam-shaped samples (7 mm × 2 mm × 1 mm) were prepared with the AS containing the ZnCl2 solution to perform flexural strength (FS) tests.

Trends of maxillofacial injuries resulting from physical violence in Brazil.

Dent Traumatol

February 2020

Department of Social and Preventive Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Background/aim: A large proportion of interpersonal violence results in maxillofacial injuries. The monitoring of maxillofacial injuries in the context of gender violence has been little explored. The aim of this study was to analyze trends in cases of maxillofacial injuries resulting from interpersonal physical violence considering the gender of the victim and perpetrator.

Evaluation of morphology, morphometry and follicular dynamics in FecGE genotyped ewes.

Theriogenology

September 2019

Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation-Tabuleiros Costeiros, Avenue Beira Mar, 3250 - Jardins, 49025-040, Aracaju - SE, Brazil. Electronic address:

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of FecG mutation on the development of ovarian follicles. To this end, 42 Santa Inês ewes were genotyped for FecG mutation and classified as wild-type (FecG), heterozygous (FecG) or mutant homozygous (FecG). Ovarian fragments were processed, and the follicles were analyzed with regard to the morphology and morphometry using classical histology.

Can caffeine supplementation reverse the effect of time of day on repeated-sprint exercise performance?

Appl Physiol Nutr Metab

February 2019

a High-Intensity Intermittent Exercise Physiology Research Group, School of Physical and Education and Sport, University of São Paulo, São Paulo 05508-030, Brazil.

The aim of this study was to evaluate if caffeine can reduce the negative influence of diurnal variations on repeated-sprint performance, in addition to investigating if caffeine in the afternoon would potentiate performance compared with the morning. Thirteen physically active men took part in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled and crossover study. All participants underwent a repeated-sprint ability test (10 × 6 s cycle sprints, with 30 s of rest) at 60 min after ingestion of either 5 mg·kg or placebo under 4 different conditions: morning with caffeine ingestion, morning with placebo ingestion, afternoon with caffeine ingestion, and afternoon with placebo ingestion.

Early mobilization: Why, what for and how?

Med Intensiva

October 2017

Postgraduate Program in Rehabilitation and Inclusion, Methodist University Center (IPA), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; Postgraduate Program in Biosciences and Rehabilitation, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Early mobilization strategies in the intensive care unit may result in the prevention and reduction of polyneuromyopathy in the critical patient, improved quality of life, shortened ICU and hospital stay, and lesser mortality during hospitalization. However, it is well known that factors such as the protocol used, the population included in the studies, the timing of the strategy, the severity of the patients and different barriers directly influence the outcomes. This study examines the main protocols described in the literature and their associated results.

November 2016

*University Center CESMAC, Maceió†State University of São Paulo, UNESP, Araraquara, São Paulo‡University Center of Tiradentes, UNIT, Maceió§University Center CESMAC, Maceió, Brazil.

Introduction: The florid cemento-osseous dysplasia is an uncommon condition nonneoplastic, of unknown cause with higher prevalence in melanodermic women, limited the maxillary bones, is characterized by the presence of dispersed and diffuse radiopaque calcifications, constituted of bone and dense cemento; however, when the bone is infected it induces the suppuration and formation of osseous sequestra, thus resulting in an osteomyelitis frame.

Clinical Report: The patient was attended in a Dental Specialties Center in the state of Alagoas, Brazil, presenting on clinical examination edema and extra oral fistula with pus drainage in hemiface submandibular of the right side. Radiographically it was possible to observe area of sclerosis and osseous sequestra involving the right side region of the mandible body, and it increases zones of the bone density.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), the most common inflammatory autoimmune rheumatic disease in children, consists of a heterogeneous group of diseases with 7 distinct subtypes. Involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in JIA varies from 17% to 87%, and can alter craniofacial growth due to damage to the condylar growth center. This study was a literature review and clinical report of bilateral ankylosis of the TMJ in a 13-year-old patient with polyarticular JIA.
