A novel wire mesh "cell" for studying lipid oxidative processes by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

A novel infrared (IR) sample handling accessory has been developed to monitor and study oxidation processes of edible oils under moderate temperature conditions by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. A reusable stainless steel mesh IR "cell" was designed and evaluated from the standpoint of mesh size, transmission characteristics, its ability to entrap oil, and techniques to apply sample and normalize path length so as to obtain good quality, reproducible spectra. The concept is to entrap oil within the mesh by means of its inherent surface tension and to take advantage of the high surface area provided by the mesh to facilitate rapid oxidation of the oil by air at ambient or slightly elevated temperatures without having to resort to more extreme temperature conditions to track oxidative changes in real time.

Habitat-corridors are assumed to counteract the negative impacts of habitat loss and fragmentation, but their efficiency in doing so depends on the maintenance of ecological processes in corridor conditions. For plants dispersing in linear habitats, one of these critical processes is the maintenance of adequate pollen transfer to insure seed production within the corridor. This study focuses on a common, self-incompatible forest herb, Trillium grandiflorum, to assess plant-pollinator interactions and the influence of spatial processes on plant reproduction in hedgerow corridors compared to forests.

Microbial oxygen uptake in sludge as influenced by compost physical parameters.

The wide range of optimal values reported for the physical parameters of compost mixtures suggest that their interactive relationships should be investigated. The objective of this study was to examine the microbial O(2) uptake rate (OUR) in 16 sludge waste recipes, offering a range of moisture content (MC), waste/bulking agent (W/BA) ratio and BA particle size levels determined using a central composite experimental design. The 3 kg samples were maintained at a constant temperature and aeration rate for 28 days, during which a respirometer recorded O(2) uptake to provide a measure of microbial activity and biodegradability.

Rapid increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes (DM2) in Papua New Guinea, coupled with compelling epidemiological evidence supporting a diabetogenic association with betel quid (BQ) chewing has lead us to investigate dietary strategies that might offer protection from developing DM2. We investigated the dietary habits of Kalo residents from coastal Central Province who are avid BQ chewers yet have a relatively low incidence of DM2 compared to the ethnically similar and adjacent Wanigelans who abstain from BQ yet have an unusually high incidence of DM2. In Kalo, guava bud (Psidium guajava L) and noni (Morinda citrifolia L) were consumed much more frequently than in Wanigela, whereas the inverse was observed for mangrove bean (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L) Lam.

The seasonal development of the swede midge Contarinia nasturtii Kieffer was studied in Quebec in 2004 and 2005 using pheromone traps, emergence cages, and visual inspection in relation to degree-day accumulations (DD7.2 degrees C). Peak emergence of overwintering adults occurred between 344 and 731 DD7.

The import of PTS1 proteins into the glycosome or peroxisome requires binding of a PTS1-laden PEX5 receptor to the membrane-associated protein PEX14 to facilitate translocation of PTS1 proteins into the lumen of these organelles. Quaternary structure analysis of protozoan parasite Leishmania donovani PEX14 (LdPEX14) revealed that this protein forms a homomeric complex with a size > 670 kDa. Moreover, deletion mapping indicated that disruption of LdPEX14 oligomerization correlated with the elimination of the hydrophobic region and coiled-coil motif present in LdPEX14.

Effectiveness of three bulking agents for food waste composting.

Rather than landfilling, composting the organic fraction of municipal solid wastes recycles the waste as a safe and nutrient enriched soil amendment, reduces emissions of greenhouse gases and generates less leachate. The objective of this project was to investigate the composting effectiveness of three bulking agents, namely chopped wheat (Triticum) straw, chopped mature hay consisting of 80% timothy (milium) and 20% clover (triphullum) and pine (pinus) wood shavings. These bulking agents were each mixed in duplicates at three different ratios with food waste (FW) and composted for 10 days using prototype in-vessel composters to observe their temperature and pH trends.

The characterization of food waste (FW) and locally available bulking agents (BA) are a prerequisite to optimizing compost recipes. This study measured the variation in FW characteristics (pH, dry matter (DM), carbon (C), wet bulk density and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN)) produced by a restaurant and a community kitchen in downtown Montreal, Canada from May to August 2004. The project also measured the mass of FW produced by another restaurant and a group of 20-48 households, from June to August 2004.

Then, leachates were applied to two soils at rates of 13-169 mg As kg(-1) soil (dry weight basis), 12-151 mg Cr kg(-1) and 10-216 mg Cu kg(-1). An automated FTIR method for the routine quantitative determination of moisture in lubricants: An alternative to Karl Fischer titration.

An accurate primary Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) method for the determination of moisture in mineral and ester based lubricants has been developed based on the extraction of moisture into dry acetonitrile. FTIR evaluation of acetonitrile extracts from new and used lubricants as well as common lubricant additives and contaminants which might co-extract indicated that phenolic constituents interfered significantly with moisture measurements. By measuring moisture at 3676cm(-1) on the shoulder of the asymmetric OH stretching band, spectral interferences from extracted phenolic constituents were minimized.

Simultaneous mobilization of heavy metals and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds from soil with cyclodextrin and EDTA in admixture.

This study evaluated the efficacy of a washing process with cyclodextrin in combination with ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) for the simultaneous mobilization of heavy metals and PCBs from a field contaminated soil. Ultrasonically aided mixing of the field contaminated soil with a combination of cyclodextrin solution (10%, w/v) and a sparing quantity (2 mmol) of EDTA, simultaneously mobilized appreciable quantities of PCBs and much of the analyte metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) burdens. Relative to the action of individual reagents, a combination of randomly methylated (RAMEB) or hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) with EDTA did not alter the PCB extraction efficiency nor did the presence of cyclodextrin change the efficiency of mobilization of most heavy metals (Al, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn) but did increase the recovery of Cu and Pb modestly.

Unlike wastewater, pulp and paper mill effluents are generally severely deficient in bioavailable nitrogen and phosphorus. The influence of nitrogen and phosphorus limitations on steady-state or typical pulp and paper mill activated sludge floc properties and performance was studied using a bioreactor-fed synthetic raw mill effluent and seeded with mill activated sludge. Limitation of either nitrogen or phosphorus decreased growth, five-day biochemical oxygen demand, and suspended solids removal.

Intakes of energy, protein, iron and vitamin A in India are usually reported as inadequate. Recognizing that traditional food systems are sustainable, high in species variety, and have rich nutrient sources, we compared dietary intakes and nutrient sources of Dalit mothers and their children living in villages with and without an intervention based on improved access to the traditional Dalit food system. 24-hour recalls were conducted with Dalit mothers and their children aged 6-39 months during summer and rainy seasons in 2003.
