Background: The usefulness of C-reactive protein (CRP) as a non-specific marker of inflammation during pregnancy and lactation is unclear in impoverished populations where co-existing infections and vitamin deficiencies are common.
Methods: This cross-sectional study in Panama recruited 120 pregnant and 99 lactating Ngäbe-Buglé women from 14 communities in rural Panama. Obstetric history, indoor wood smoke exposure, fieldwork, BMI, vitamins A, B, D, and folic acid, and inflammation markers (CRP, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), plateletcrit and cytokines) were measured.

Background: Reciprocating agitation thermal processing (RA-TP) is a recent innovation in the field of canning for obtaining high-quality canned food. The objective of this study was to compare RA-TP processing with conventional non-agitated (still) processing with respect to the impact on quality (color, antioxidant capacity, total phenols, carotenoid and lycopene contents) of canned tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) puree.
Results: Owing to a 63-81% reduction in process times as compared with still processing, tomato puree with a brighter red color (closer to fresh) was obtained during RA-TP.

The undesirable flavor compounds diacetyl and 2,3-pentanedione are vicinal diketones (VDKs) formed by extracellular oxidative decarboxylation of intermediate metabolites of the isoleucine, leucine and valine (ILV) biosynthetic pathway. These VDKs are taken up by Saccharomyces and enzymatically converted to acetoin and 3-hydroxy-2-pentanone, respectively. Purification of a highly enriched diacetyl reductase fraction from Saccharomyces cerevisiae in conjunction with mass spectrometry identified Old Yellow Enzyme (Oye) as an enzyme capable of catalyzing VDK reduction.

The Leishmania guanosine 5'-monophosphate reductase (GMPR) and inosine 5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) are purine metabolic enzymes that function maintaining the cellular adenylate and guanylate nucleotide. Interestingly, both enzymes contain a cystathionine-β-synthase domain (CBS). To investigate this metabolic regulation, the Leishmania GMPR was cloned and shown to be sufficient to complement the guaC (GMPR), but not the guaB (IMPDH), mutation in Escherichia coli.

Background: Despite osmotic dehydration being a cost effective process for moisture removal, the cost implications of making, regenerating, and properly disposing of the spent osmotic solutions contributes greatly to the economic feasibility of the drying operation. The potential for recycling of osmotic solutions and their use for creation of a novel product was explored using microwave-osmotic dehydration under continuous flow spray (MWODS) conditions.
Results: Identical runs were repeated 10 times to determine the progressive physical and compositional effects of the thermal treatment and leaching from the cranberry samples.

The Delphi technique is a means of facilitating discussion among experts in order to develop consensus, and can be used for policy formulation. This article describes a modified Delphi approach in which 27 multi-disciplinary academics and 22 stakeholders from Ghana and North America were polled about ways to address negative effects of small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Ghana. In early 2014, the academics, working in disciplinary groups, synthesized 17 response options based on data aggregated during an Integrated Assessment of ASGM in Ghana.

High fertilizer input is necessary to sustain high yields in oil palm agroecosystems, but it may endanger neighboring aquatic ecosystems when excess nutrients are transported to waterways. In this study, the hydrochemical dynamics of groundwater and streams under baseflow conditions were evaluated with bi-monthly measurements for 1 year on 16 watersheds. A simple procedure for the determination of total phospholipids (TPL) in edible oils was developed by combining a single-step, in situ methanol/acetonitrile (MeOH/ACN) extraction of the oil sample followed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis of the extract. Spectral analysis of extracts in a 25 μm CaF cell obtained using 1:1 MeOH/ACN added to oil in a 2:1 ratio indicated that measurements made using only the asymmetric phosphate diester PO stretching band at 1243 cm in second-derivative spectra were sufficient for the accurate measurement of TPL with minimal coextracted triglyceride interferences being encountered. FTIR calibration spectra were devised using only phosphatidylcholine (PC) as a representative phospholipid standard, covering a range of 0-50000 μg/g TPL and spiked into 1:1 MeOH/ACN, capable of tracking the added PC with an SD of <200 μg/g.

Spectral reconstitution (SR) is a dilution technique developed to facilitate the rapid, automated, and quantitative analysis of viscous oil samples by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). This technique involves determining the dilution factor through measurement of an absorption band of a suitable spectral marker added to the diluent, and then spectrally removing the diluent from the sample and multiplying the resulting spectrum to compensate for the effect of dilution on the band intensities. The facsimile spectrum of the neat oil thus obtained can then be qualitatively or quantitatively analyzed for the parameter(s) of interest.

Background: Few studies have investigated the relative influence of individual susceptibility versus household exposure factors versus regional clustering of infection on soil transmitted helminth (STH) transmission. The present study examined reinfection dynamics and spatial clustering of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm in an extremely impoverished indigenous setting in rural Panamá over a 16 month period that included two treatment and reinfection cycles in preschool children.
Methodology/principle Findings: Spatial cluster analyses were used to identify high prevalence clusters for each nematode.
