This study was aimed at optimizing the astaxanthin extraction efficiency from shrimp shell (green tiger, Penaeus semisulcatus). Astaxanthin was extracted using selected nonpolar/polar solvents (petroleum ether, n-hexane, ethanol, acetone) individually and in ternary mixtures of petroleum ether, acetone, and water in ratios of 15:50:35, 50:45:5, and 15:75:10 for different times (2,4 and 6 h). The results showed that solvents with higher polarity were more suitable for the extraction of astaxanthin, and increasing the extraction time from 2 to 6 h improved the extraction yield.

Effect of microencapsulation on antioxidant and antifungal properties of aqueous extract of pomegranate peel.

Different properties of the encapsulated powders (bioactive components, physicochemical and morphological properties) and storage stability of prepared microcapsules were evaluated during 42 days of storage at a different relative humidity (52 and 75%) and temperatures (4 and 25 °C).

The objective of this work was to obtain homogeneous nanofibers from pea protein isolate (PPI) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by hybrid electrospinning as well as incorporating cinnamaldehyde (CA) into the matrix to obtain an antibacterial mat. The effect of processing conditions, pH, polymer and CA concentrations on formulation properties and nanofiber morphology were investigated and the mats were visualized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

Exosomes are small vesicles of endocytic origin, which are released into the extracellular environment and mediate a variety of physiological and pathological conditions. Here we show that Schistosoma mansoni releases exosome-like vesicles in vitro. Protein import into the glycosome requires docking of the cargo-loaded peroxin 5 (PEX5) receptor to the peroxin 14 (PEX14) bound to the glycosome surface. To examine the LdPEX14-membrane interaction, we purified promastigote glycosomes and determined the phospholipid and fatty acid composition.
