Much research has explored the physiological, energetic, environmental, and psychological factors that influence pacing in endurance events. Although this research has generally neglected the role of psychological variation across individuals, recent studies have hinted at its importance. Here we conducted an online survey of over 1,300 marathon runners, testing whether any of five psychological constructs - competitiveness, goal achievement, risk taking in pace (RTP), domain-specific risk taking, and willingness to suffer in the marathon - predicted slowing in runners' most recent marathons.

Pure magnetite experiences a first-order phase transition (the Verwey transition) near 120-125 K wherein the mineral's symmetry changes from cubic to monoclinic. This transformation results in the formation of fine-scale crystallographic twins and is accompanied by a profound change in magnetic properties. The Verwey transition is critical to a variety of applications in environmental magnetism and paleomagnetism because its expression is diagnostic for the presence of stoichiometric (or nearly stoichiometric) magnetite and cycling through the Verwey transition tends to remove the majority of multidomain magnetic remanence.

Asymmetric morality: Blame is more differentiated and more extreme than praise.

Despite extensive recent investigations of moral judgments, little is known about how negative judgments like blame might differ from positive judgments like praise. Drawing on theory from both social and moral cognition, the present studies identify and test potential asymmetries in the extremity and differentiatedness of blame as compared to praise. The amplified blame hypothesis predicts that people will assign greater blame for negative behaviors than praise for positive behaviors.

Recent work has shown that implicit first impressions of other people can be rapidly updated when new information about them is highly diagnostic or provides a reinterpretation of the basis of prior belief. The Affect Misattribution Procedure (AMP; Payne, Cheng, Govorun, & Stewart, 2005) is one prominent implicit measure that has been widely used in this and other work. However, the status of the AMP as a measure of unintentional responding has been a matter of debate, which necessarily also raises questions about the "implicitness" of the updated responses within recent person impression research.

Although media exposure has emerged as a significant predictor of consumers' sexual decision making, less is known about the mechanisms involved and about the dynamics of these relations for adults, in general, and for African American adults, in particular. To address these gaps, we used structural equation modeling (SEM) to test whether heterosexual Black women's endorsement of traditional gender and sexual roles mediates connections between their consumption of four mainstream media (music videos, reality TV programming, movies, and women's magazines) and three dimensions of their sexual well-being (sexual assertiveness, sexual inhibition, and sexual deception). We surveyed 594 heterosexual Black women aged 17 to 55 who were undergraduate and graduate students at two universities (one historically Black university and one predominantly White institution).

JAK/STAT inhibition with ruxolitinib enhances oncolytic virotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer models.

The concept of using viruses to treat cancer has now shown proof of concept in several recent clinical trials, leading to the first FDA approval of virotherapy for melanoma last year. Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is a promising oncolytic virus that has inhibitory effects on a number of cancer types including non-small cell lung cancer. One of the major mechanisms of resistance to VSV infection is the type I interferon (IFN) response, leading to the development of VSV expressing IFNβ which will lead to resistance of viral replication in normal cells which have intact IFN signaling but allow replication in cancer cells with defective IFNβ signaling.

Monsoon-driven Saharan dust variability over the past 240,000 years.

Reconstructions of past Saharan dust deposition in marine sediments provide foundational records of North African climate over time scales of 10 to 10 years. Previous dust records show primarily glacial-interglacial variability in the Pleistocene, in contrast to other monsoon records showing strong precessional variability. Here, we present the first Saharan dust record spanning multiple glacial cycles obtained using Th normalization, an improved method of calculating fluxes.

Computational Study of the Driving Forces and Dynamics of Curcumin Binding to Amyloid-β Protofibrils.

Oligomeric aggregates of the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide are believed to be the primary toxic species that initiate events leading to neurodegeneration and cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Small molecules that interfere with Aβ aggregation and/or neurotoxicity are being investigated as potential therapeutics for AD, including naturally occurring polyphenols. We have recently shown that curcumin exerts a neuroprotective effect against Aβ40-induced toxicity on cultured neuronal cells through two possible concerted pathways, ameliorating Aβ oligomer-induced toxicity and inducing the formation of nontoxic Aβ oligomers, both of which involve curcumin binding to Aβ oligomers.

Many US immigrant populations develop metabolic diseases post immigration, but the causes are not well understood. Although the microbiome plays a role in metabolic disease, there have been no studies measuring the effects of US immigration on the gut microbiome. We collected stool, dietary recalls, and anthropometrics from 514 Hmong and Karen individuals living in Thailand and the United States, including first- and second-generation immigrants and 19 Karen individuals sampled before and after immigration, as well as from 36 US-born European American individuals.

The goals of the KIR component of the 17th International HLA and Immunogenetics Workshop (IHIW) were to encourage and educate researchers to begin analyzing KIR at allelic resolution, and to survey the nature and extent of KIR allelic diversity across human populations. To represent worldwide diversity, we analyzed 1269 individuals from ten populations, focusing on the most polymorphic KIR genes, which express receptors having three immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domains (KIR3DL1/S1, KIR3DL2 and KIR3DL3). We identified 13 novel alleles of KIR3DL1/S1, 13 of KIR3DL2 and 18 of KIR3DL3.

It is frequently of interest to estimate the time that individuals survive with a disease, that is, to estimate the time between disease onset and occurrence of a clinical endpoint such as death. Epidemiologic survival data are commonly collected from either an incident cohort, whose members' disease onset occurs after the study baseline date, or from a cohort with prevalent disease that is followed forward in time. Incident cohort survival data are limited by study termination, while prevalent cohort data provide biased (left-truncated) survival data.

The Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN) has mounted many summer workshops since its first in 1995 held at Davidson College. An important outcome of the 1995 workshop was the development of four "blueprints" to help guide institutions in developing and maintaining undergraduate programs in neuroscience. Since then, at approximately ten-year intervals, participants at the FUN workshops have revisited and amended the Blueprints to better reflect best practices in undergraduate neuroscience education, including adding a fifth blueprint in 2005.

Uncertainty in the estimation of daytime ecosystem carbon cycling due to the light inhibition of leaf respiration and photorespiration, and how these small fluxes vary through the growing season in the field, remains a confounding element in calculations of gross primary productivity and ecosystem respiration. While cytochrome P450 (CYP)-mediated biosynthesis of arachidonic acid (AA) epoxides promotes tumor growth by driving angiogenesis, cancer cell intrinsic functions of CYPs are less understood. CYP-derived AA epoxides, called epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs), also promote the growth of tumor epithelia.
