Respiration plays a key role in the terrestrial carbon cycle and is a fundamental metabolic process in all plant tissues and cells. We review respiration from the perspective of plants that grow in their natural habitat and how it is influenced by wide-ranging elements at different scales, from metabolic substrate availability to shifts in climate. Decades of field-based measurements have honed our understanding of the biological and environmental controls on leaf, root, stem, and whole-organism respiration.

The interaction between the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral immune system is key for brain function in homeostasis and disease. Recent studies have revealed that the C-C chemokine receptor 7 (CCR7) is expressed in both CNS resident cells and peripheral immune cells, and plays an important role in regulating behavior in homeostasis and neuroinflammation in disease. This review integrates studies examining the role of CCR7 in CNS resident and peripheral immune cells in homeostasis and disease, as well as the pathways of peripheral immune cell migration in and out of the brain via CCR7.

Premise: Plant ecological strategies are often defined by the integration of underlying traits related to resource acquisition, allocation, and growth. Correlations between key traits across diverse plants suggest that variation in plant ecological strategies is largely driven by a fast-slow continuum of plant economics. However, trait correlations may not be constant through the life of a leaf, and it is still poorly understood how trait function varies over time in long-lived leaves.

In amniotes, the predominant developmental strategy underlying body size evolution is thought to be adjustments to the rate of growth rather than its duration. However, most theoretical and experimental studies supporting this axiom focus on pairwise comparisons and/or lack an explicit phylogenetic framework. We present the first large-scale phylogenetic comparative analysis examining developmental strategies underlying the evolution of body size, focusing on non-avialan theropod dinosaurs.

Rapid and accurate prediction of metal bioaccumulation in crops are important for assessing metal environmental risks. We aimed to incorporate machine learning modeling methods to predict heavy metal contents in rice crops and identify influencing factors. We conducted a field study in Jiangsu province, China, collecting 2123 pairs of soil-rice samples in a uniform measurement and using 10 machine learning algorithms to predict the uptake of Cd, Hg, As, and Pb in rice grain.

Introduction: Gastrointestinal illnesses associated with the consumption of shellfish contaminated with have a negative impact on the shellfish industry due to recalls and loss of consumer confidence in products. This bacterial pathogen is very diverse and specific sequence types (STs), ST631 and ST36, have emerged as prevalent causes of foodborne disease outbreaks in the US, though other STs have been implicated in sporadic cases. We investigated whether bacteriophages could be used as a proxy to monitor for the presence of distinct STs in coastal waters.

Background: Pruritus is a common symptom experienced by patients with nondialysis CKD, but risk factors for incident pruritus in this patient population have not been evaluated.
Methods: We identified 1951 participants with CKD in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort Study without pruritus at the baseline assessment. Pruritus was assessed by the Kidney Disease Quality of Life-36 (KDQOL-36) instrument, and moderate-to-severe pruritus was defined as a response of 3 or higher on a Likert scale of 1-5.

We study epidemic arrival times in meta-population disease models through the lens of front propagation into unstable states. We demonstrate that several features of invasion fronts in the PDE context are also relevant to the network case. We show that the susceptible-infected-recovered model on a network is linearly determined in the sense that the arrival times in the nonlinear system are approximated by the arrival times of the instability in the system linearized near the disease-free state.

Although often considered "extremophiles," lichens may not readily acclimate to novel climates well beyond historical norms. In a previous study (Smith et al.

: The opioid epidemic has permeated all strata of society over the last two decades, especially within the adolescent student athletic environment, a group particularly at risk and presenting their own challenges for science and practice. This paper (a) describes the development of a web-based intervention called the Student Athlete Wellness Portal that models effective opioid misuse resistance strategies and (b) details the findings of a single-group design to test its effectiveness. : Formative research included 35 student athletes residing in the United States, ages 14 to 21, who had been injured in their school-based sport.

Understory plants are often inadequately represented or neglected within analyses of forest ecosystem productivity. Further, the potential impacts of the biological factors of age class and growth form on carbon cycling physiology, and how it may vary across the growing season and amongst species of different native/non-native status, have not been thoroughly considered. Our study examines photosynthesis and associated physical leaf traits in two understory woody species, , introduced and invasive in North America, and , a common subcanopy species native to North America.

Background: Improvements in screening and imaging technologies and treatment of liver disease have influenced the trend in diagnosis for stage I liver cancer. In this article, recent trends in age, incidence, tumour size, and survival of different stages of liver cancer are analysed.
Methods: Surveillance, Epidemiology, and end results data from the National Cancer Institute were used to analyse trends in age-adjusted incidence rate, mean tumour size at diagnosis, age at diagnosis, and 5-year survival probability for stage I liver cancer.

Objective: To determine whether an intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) prevention bundle featuring midline-elevated positioning reduced IVH among high-risk infants.
Study Design: In a retrospective study design, we compared outcomes of infants <1250 grams birth weight or <30 weeks gestation before (N = 205) and after (N = 360) implementation of an IVH prevention bundle, using Bayesian and frequentist logistic regression to determine whether the intervention decreased any grade IVH.
Results: In both the Bayesian and frequentist analyses, there was no difference in odds of any grade IVH before and after the implementation of the prevention bundle (OR 0.

Background: Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK-US) use for diagnostic purposes is expanding in physical therapy practice. Identifying and describing physical therapy-specific approaches to incorporating MSK-US into the evaluation process is needed. Musculoskeletal ultrasound extends the physical exam to allow clinicians to visualize anatomy and pathophysiology both statically and dynamically.

The preparation of halogenated benzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic diimide derivatives is challenging because of the possibility of competitive incorrect cyclizations and SAr reactivity. Here, we demonstrate that bypassing traditional cyclic anhydrides and instead directly reacting dihalobenzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acids with primary amines in acetic acid solvent successfully provides a range of desirable -diimide products in good yields. Furthermore, we demonstrate that sterically challenging -derivatizations can be readily achieved under microwave reactor conditions.

This study examines narrative identity among a large, diverse sample of people with disabilities (PWDs) in the United States during the "second wave" of the Covid-19 pandemic (October-December 2020). The study relied on abductive analyses, combining a purely inductive phase of inquiry followed by two rounds of investigation that filtered inductive insights through three theoretical lenses: social-ecological theory, the theory of narrative identity, and perspectives from the interdisciplinary field of disability studies. The central result was the identification of a particular configuration of self, one that was demonstrably interdependent with both immediate interpersonal contexts and with broader cultural contexts.

The spectacular fossil fauna and flora preserved in the Upper Cretaceous terrestrial strata of North America's Western Interior Basin record an exceptional peak in the diversification of fossil vertebrates in the Campanian, which has been termed the 'zenith of dinosaur diversity'. The wide latitudinal distribution of rocks and fossils that represent this episode, spanning from northern Mexico to the northern slopes of Alaska, provides a unique opportunity to gain insights into dinosaur paleoecology and to address outstanding questions regarding faunal provinciality in connection to paleogeography and climate. Whereas reliable basin-wide correlations are fundamental to investigations of this sort, three decades of radioisotope geochronology of various vintages and limited compatibility has complicated correlation of distant fossil-bearing successions and given rise to contradictory paleobiogeographic and evolutionary hypotheses.
