The connection between microbial infections and tumor formation is notably exemplified by and its association with gastric cancer (GC) and colorectal cancer (CRC). While early studies hinted at a link between and colorectal neoplasms, comprehensive retrospective cohort studies were lacking. Recent research indicates that individuals treated for infection experience a significant reduction in both CRC incidence and mortality, suggesting a potential role of this infection in malignancy development.

Leukodystrophies represent a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by specific genetic mutations, metabolic abnormalities, and degeneration of white matter in the central nervous system. These disorders are classified into several categories, with X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD), metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD), and globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD) being the most prevalent demyelinating leukodystrophies in pediatric populations. Maintaining proteostasis, which is critical for normal cellular function, relies fundamentally on the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) and autophagy for the degradation of misfolded and damaged proteins.

  • - The Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan highlights oral cancer as a significant health issue, being the third most common cancer and a leading cause of death in men, particularly with low survival rates in cases of lymph node metastasis.
  • - A study analyzed 612 oral cancer patients who chewed betel nuts, focusing on tumor thickness, lymph node density, and metastasis distribution to find better survival predictors.
  • - Findings showed that a tumor thickness over 6 mm and lymph node density greater than 0.04 were critical predictors of poor survival, suggesting these factors, along with TNM staging, should guide treatment decisions.

2024 Guidelines of the Taiwan Society of Cardiology on the Primary Prevention of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease --- Part II.

Acta Cardiol Sin

November 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Min-Sheng General Hospital, Taoyuan; Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan.

For the primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), the recommended treatment target for each modifiable risk factor is as follows: reducing body weight by 5-10%; blood pressure < 130/80 mmHg (systolic pressure < 120 mmHg in high-risk individuals); low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) < 100 mg/dL in high-risk individuals, LDL-C < 115 mg/dL in moderate-risk individuals, LDL-C < 130 mg/dL in low-risk individuals, and LDL-C < 160 mg/dL in those with a minimal; complete and persistent abstinence from cigarette smoking; hemoglobin A1C < 7.0%; fulfilling recommended amounts of the six food groups according to the Taiwan food guide; and moderate-intensity physical activity 150 min/wk or vigorous physical activity 75 min/wk. For the primary prevention of ASCVD by pharmacological treatment in individuals with modifiable risk factors/clinical conditions, statins are the first-line therapy for reducing LDL-C levels; some specific anti-diabetic drugs proven to be effective in randomized controlled trials for the primary prevention of ASCVD are recommended in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus; pharmacological treatment is recommended to assist in weight management for obese patients with a body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m (or 27 kg/m who also have at least one ASCVD risk factor or obesity-related comorbidity); an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, a sodium-dependent glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor, and finerenone can be used in diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease for the primary prevention of ASCVD.

In the past, patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) were advised to avoid exercise due to concerns that it might strain cardiac function and exacerbate symptoms. However, recent evidence indicates that structured exercise programs can enhance outcomes and improve health-related quality of life for these patients. Consequently, exercise rehabilitation is now recommended in international guidelines as a key component of PH management.

Department of Medicine, MacKay Medical College, New Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Psychiatry, MacKay Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Methylone (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylcathinone) is a rapid-acting entactogen that has demonstrated significant benefits for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and exhibits good tolerability in phase 1 clinical trials. Despite these promising results, its preclinical effects on fear memory regulation and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. This study aims to investigate the impact of methylone on auditory fear extinction and its influence on neuronal and synaptic activity in the basolateral amygdala (BLA).

Article Synopsis
  • Thermal ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used for treating benign thyroid nodules but raises concerns about difficulties in subsequent thyroid surgery and accurate pathological assessments.
  • A study with 165 patients compared outcomes between those who had prior ablation and those who had not, finding that the ablation group experienced longer surgery times, higher difficulty scores, and more severe adhesions.
  • Histopathological evaluations indicated significant tissue changes in the ablated areas, including inflammation and necrosis, which complicated the diagnosis of thyroid tumors, raising issues in identifying tumor boundaries and potential malignancy.

Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is pivotal for diagnosing and sampling pancreatic tumor tissues. This study aimed to assess how the histological type and size of tumors influence the adequacy of macroscopic tissue cores acquired using EUS-guided fine needle biopsy (FNB). We conducted a retrospective study involving 180 patients with pathologically confirmed pancreatic malignancies at our hospital, a medical center, between July 2020 and June 2023.

Aerodynamic Threshold Measures for Reflecting Glottal Closure in Voice Disorders.

J Speech Lang Hear Res

January 2025

Department of Respiratory Medicine, Second Affiliated Hospital, Xiamen Medical College, China.

Purpose: Previous work suggested that phonation threshold pressure (PTP), phonation threshold flow (PTF), and phonation threshold power (PTW) could be effective aerodynamic measures for quantifying glottal incompetence. This study examined how these measures could reflect varying extent of incomplete glottal closure in individuals with voice disorders.

Method: Thirty individuals formally diagnosed with glottal incompetence, including 10 with hypofunctional disorders (hypo group) and 20 with hyperfunctional disorders (hyper group), and 30 individuals with normal voice (control group) participated in the study.

January 2025

Department of Critical Care Medicine, MacKay Memorial Hospital, Taipei City, Taiwan (R.O.C.).

The prone position is often used for patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome and specific surgical postures. When performing venous cannulation in this position, it is important to have a structured review to introduce the available major veins and ultrasound-guided procedure. In this review, we discuss the techniques of ultrasound-guided cannulation and provide insights into various aspects, including the anatomical locations of veins, vein sizes, placement techniques, surrounding structures at risk, and reported experiences with catheter placements.

  • Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a major global health issue, and the study highlights the significance of inflammation and atherosclerosis in their development.
  • In a study of 3,278 participants in Taiwan, both the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the neutrophil-to-HDL cholesterol ratio (NHR) were found helpful in identifying individuals at high risk for CVD, with NHR being particularly effective.
  • The research suggests that while NHR is a strong tool for CVD risk assessment, NLR may serve as a better predictor of all-cause mortality, indicating the complex relationship between inflammation and lipid levels in CVD.
