Most published prediction models for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) were poorly reported, at high risk of bias, and heterogeneous in model performance. To tackle methodological challenges faced in previous prediction studies, we investigated whether model updating and extending improves mortality prediction, using the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as a proxy. All COVID-19 patients admitted to seven ICUs in the Euregio-Meuse Rhine during the first pandemic wave were included.

Development of tools to facilitate the diagnosis of hereditary fructose intolerance.

JIMD Rep

September 2023

Member of European Reference Network for Hereditary Metabolic Diseases (MetabERN).

Although hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI) is an inborn error of fructose metabolism that classically presents at infancy, the diagnosis is often missed or delayed. In this study, we aimed to develop tools to facilitate the diagnosis of HFI. The intake of fructose-containing food products, that is, fruit, fruit juice and sugar-sweetened beverages, was assessed by a 3-day food diary in adult HFI patients ( = 15) and age, sex, and BMI-matched controls ( = 15).

Background Context: Cervical disc replacement (CDR) aims to restore motion of the treated level to reduce the risk of adjacent segment disease (ASD) compared with spinal fusion. However, first-generation articulating devices are unable to mimic the complex deformation kinematics of a natural disc. Thus, a biomimetic artificial intervertebral CDR (bioAID), containing a hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA)-sodium methacrylate (NaMA) hydrogel core representing the nucleus pulposus, an ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene fiber jacket as annulus fibrosus, and titanium endplates with pins for primary mechanical fixation, was developed.

Thalamocortical coherence and causality in different sleep stages using deep brain stimulation recordings.

Sleep Med

December 2022

Department of Clinical Neurophysiology, Maastricht University Medical Center, Maastricht University, Maastricht, Netherlands; School for Mental Health and Neuroscience (MHeNS), Maastricht University, Maastricht, Netherlands. Electronic address:

Previous research has shown an interplay between the thalamus and cerebral cortex during NREM sleep in humans, however the directionality of the thalamocortical synchronization is as yet unknown. In this study thalamocortical connectivity during different NREM sleep stages using sleep scalp electroencephalograms and local field potentials from the left and right anterior thalamus was measured in three epilepsy patients implanted with deep brain stimulation electrodes. Connectivity was assessed as debiased weighted phase lag index and granger causality between the thalamus and cortex for the NREM sleep stages N1, N2 and N3.

Background Late gadolinium enhancement and left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction on cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) are prognostic markers, but their predictive value for incident heart failure or life-threatening arrhythmias in acute myocarditis patients is limited. CMR-derived feature tracking provides a more sensitive analysis of myocardial function and may improve risk stratification in myocarditis. In this study, the prognostic value of LV, right ventricular, and left atrial strain in acute myocarditis patients is evaluated.

Article Synopsis
  • Desmopressin is a helpful treatment for people with nonsevere hemophilia A because it costs less and doesn't have the same risks as other treatments.
  • The study looked at how well desmopressin worked on bleeding compared to other treatments from 2009 to 2020.
  • It found that many patients can respond well to desmopressin, but most still use factor concentrates, which means it might not be used as well as it could be.

The cerebral pressure reactivity index (PRx), through intracranial pressure (ICP) measurements, informs clinicians about the cerebral autoregulation (CA) status in adult-sedated patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Using PRx in clinical practice is currently limited by variability over shorter monitoring periods. We applied an innovative method to reduce the PRx variability by ventilator-induced slow (1/min) positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) oscillations.

Article Synopsis
  • A study comparing immediate versus delayed coronary angiography in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest showed no significant difference in overall mean costs between the two strategies during the initial hospital stay.
  • Although immediate angiography resulted in higher procedural costs, expenses related to intensive care and ward stays were similar in both groups.
  • The findings suggest that a delayed approach, allowing for neurological recovery before invasive procedures, may be a more cost-effective strategy.

Although male Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) patients have higher Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission rates and a worse disease course, a comprehensive analysis of female and male ICU survival and underlying factors such as comorbidities, risk factors, and/or anti-infection/inflammatory therapy administration is currently lacking. Therefore, we investigated the association between sex and ICU survival, adjusting for these and other variables. In this multicenter observational cohort study, all patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia admitted to seven ICUs in one region across Belgium, The Netherlands, and Germany, and requiring vital organ support during the first pandemic wave were included.
