Animal Model Exp Med
March 2021
Goats or sheep are the preferred animal model for the preclinical evaluation of cartilage repair techniques due to the similarity of the goat stifle joint to the human knee. The medial femoral condyle of the stifle joint is the preferred site for the assessment of articular cartilage repair, as this is the primary location for this type of lesion in the human knee. Proper surgical exposure of the medial femoral condyle is paramount to obtain reproducible results without surgical error.

Background: Ticks puncture the skin of their hosts and secrete saliva, containing antiplatelet proteins, into the blood. Here, we studied disagregin, a potent platelet-inhibiting protein derived from the salivary glands of , an African soft tick. Whereas conventional αIIbβ3 antagonists contain an Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence for platelet integrin binding, disagregin contains an Arg-Glu-Asp (RED) sequence, hypothesizing a different mode of inhibitory action.

Background: Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) are a group of metabolic disorders well known to be associated with developmental delay and central nervous system anomalies. The most common CDG is caused by pathogenic variants in the phosphomannomutase 2 gene (), which impairs one of the first steps of N-glycosylation and affects multiple organ systems. Cardiac involvement can include pericardial effusion, cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmia, while an association with cardiovascular congenital anomalies is not well studied.

However, it is not clear how an individual's physical activity pattern over a week is associated with arterial stiffness. Therefore, we examined the associations of the amount and pattern of higher intensity physical activity with arterial stiffness.

No previous studies have investigated the crosstalk between the microvasculature and macrovasculature in childhood. Methods and Results In a case-control study, we enrolled 55 children aged 11 years weighing <1000 g at birth and 71 matched controls (October 2014-November 2015).

Background: In patients with a venous outflow obstruction following iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis stenting of the venous tract to prevent or alleviate postthrombotic syndrome is applied with increasing frequency. The impact of the quality of anticoagulant therapy with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) on the development of in-stent thrombosis is currently unknown.
Objectives: To determine the association between the quality of postinterventional VKA treatment and the occurrence of in-stent thrombosis.
Background Increased renal resistive index (RRI) has been associated with target organ damage as well as renal and cardiovascular outcomes. Matrix Gla (γ-carboxyglutamate) protein (MGP) is a strong inhibitor of soft tissue calcification. Its inactive form (dephospho-uncarboxylated MGP [dp-ucMGP]) has been associated with vascular stiffness, cardiovascular outcomes, and mortality.

As spinal fusions require large volumes of bone graft, different bone graft substitutes are being investigated as alternatives. A subclass of calcium phosphate materials with submicron surface topography has been shown to be a highly effective bone graft substitute. In this work, a commercially available biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) with submicron surface topography (MagnetOs; Kuros Biosciences BV) was evaluated in an model of instrumented posterolateral fusion.

Galectins have diverse functions and are involved in many biological processes because of their complex intra- and extracellular activities. Selective and potent inhibitors for galectins will be valuable tools to investigate the biological functions of these proteins. Therefore, we describe here the synthesis of galectin inhibitors with a potential "chelate effect".

CheckpointLX. Grupo de Ativistas em Tratamentos. Lisbon. Portugal.
Introduction: Pre-exposure prophylaxis is defined as the use of antiretroviral drugs to prevent HIV acquisition in uninfected individuals. Recognizing the increasing use of informal pre-exposure prophylaxis in Portugal, CheckpointLX, a community clinic targeted to men who have sex with men in Lisbon, Portugal, began offering counselling and follow-up services prior to formal introduction. This study aims to characterize pre-exposure prophylaxis users attending CheckpointLX before formal pre-exposure prophylaxis introduction in Portugal, and those who were referred to pre-exposure prophylaxis in the National Health Service following formal approval of pre-exposure prophylaxis.

At present, the in vivo formation of these different cTnT forms is incompletely understood. We therefore performed a study on the composition of cTnT during the course of myocardial infarction, including coronary venous system sampling, close to its site of release.

Background And Aims: In line with the decentralization policy, in 2009, the central government of Burkina Faso issued a decree to transfer health resources to local governments for fulfilling their new responsibilities in health care provision. The first stage of this health care decentralization process involved the basic health care facilities, composed of primary health care facilities, maternities, dispensaries, maternal and child health centers, and essential drugs depots. This study seeks to explore the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) associated with the health resources transfer in Burkina Faso, from the perspective of decision makers.

Several mesh fixation techniques using glue or self-gripping meshes have been developed to reduce postoperative pain. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate RCTs comparing adhesional/self-gripping and sutured single-layer open mesh fixations in the repair of inguinal herniation, with postoperative pain as endpoint.

MGP (Matrix Gla protein), which requires vitamin K-dependent activation, is a potent locally acting inhibitor of arterial calcification. We hypothesized that the central hemodynamic properties might be associated with inactive desphospho-uncarboxylated MGP (dp-uc MGP ).

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the principal cause of death in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether NAFLD is causally involved in the pathogenesis of CAD. For this, previously reported NAFLD susceptibility genes were clustered and tested for an association with CAD in the Coronary Artery Disease Genome-Wide Replication and Meta-Analysis plus the Coronary Artery Disease Genetics (CARDIoGRAMplusC4D) Consortium data set.

Background Electrocardiographic ( ECG ) parameters are regarded as intermediate phenotypes of cardiac arrhythmias. Insight into the genetic underpinnings of these parameters is expected to contribute to the understanding of cardiac arrhythmia mechanisms. Here we used HXB / BXH recombinant inbred rat strains to uncover genetic loci and candidate genes modulating ECG parameters.

Background: Patients with mild bleeding disorders are at risk of perioperative bleeding, but screening for these disorders remains challenging.
Objectives: We aimed to assess the prevalence of hemostatic abnormalities in patients with and without reported bleeding symptoms on a preoperative questionnaire, consisting of guideline-proposed questions, and appraised the diagnostic value of several screening modalities for the identification of patients with hemostatic abnormalities.
Methods: In this observational study, 240 patients with and 95 patients without bleeding symptoms on the preoperative questionnaire were included.
This research tests the hypothesis that promotion-focused individuals experience regulatory fit from bottom rank, intermediate performance-feedback. Prior research suggests promotion-focused individuals experience fit in high ranks (power). Bottom ranks may appear psychologically opposite to high power, which might lead one to expect that promotion-focused individuals experience fit at top ranks.
