Liver fat accumulation in response to overfeeding with a high-fat diet: a comparison between South Asian and Caucasian men.

Nutr Metab (Lond)

July 2016

Department of Human Biology, Nutrition and Toxicology Research Institute (NUTRIM) - School for Nutrition Toxicology and Metabolism, Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC+), Universiteitssingel 50, PO.Box 616, 6200MD Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Background: South Asians were reported to have a higher liver fat content as compared to BMI-matched Caucasians. This study compared the increase in liver fat content in response to overfeeding with a high fat diet in South Asian and Caucasian men when matched for body fat percentage.

Methods: Ten South Asian men (BMI 18-29 kg/m(2)) and 10 Caucasian men (BMI 22-33 kg/m(2)), aged 20-40 y, matched for body fat percentage, were included.

CYP1A2 polymorphisms in slow melatonin metabolisers: a possible relationship with autism spectrum disorder?

J Intellect Disabil Res

Department Advisium, 's Heeren Loo Zuid-Veluwe, Wekerom, The Netherlands Department of Clinical Chemistry, Rijnstate Hospital, Arnhem, The Netherlands Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands Special Education, Behavioural Science Institute, Radboud University Nijmegen, Nijmegen, The Netherlands Department of Neurology, Gelderse Vallei Hospital, Ede, The Netherlands Department of Clinical Genetics, University Maastricht/Academic Hospital, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Background: In some of our patients with intellectual disabilities (ID) and sleep problems, the initial good response to melatonin disappeared within a few weeks after starting treatment. In these patients melatonin levels at noon were extremely high (>50 pg/ml). We hypothesise that the disappearing effectiveness is associated with slow metabolisation of melatonin because of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of CYP1A2.

The role of nitric oxide in vascular headache.

Pharm World Sci

August 2003

Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Toxicology, Maastricht Academic Hospital, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Shortly after the invention of nitroglycerin (NTG), it was noticed that this substance is capable of inducing a violent headache. Only recently, it became known that this was due to the release of nitric oxide (NO) by NTG. As the molecular mechanism of migraine pain remains to be determined, NTG, being pro-drug for NO, has been used to study the aetiology and pathophysiology of migraine.

We report on 99mTc-MDP uptake in lungs and stomach in a patient with hypercalcaemia and renal failure due to elevated 1,25(OH)2vitD3 because of sarcoidosis. Presently, this typical scan pattern has only been described in patients with malignancies, parathyroid adenoma and drug-induced vitamin D intoxication. We offer possible explanations for the findings in our patient.

A new derivative (1) of diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) is described. Compound 1 contains a hydrophobic unit (a triphenyl methyl group) and a hydrophilic unit (a DTPA ester), and therefore behaves as an amphiphile in aqueous solution. Compound 1 appears to form a stable inclusion complex with 99mTc.

Ten consecutive patients with incapacitating fecal incontinence were treated with 'anal dynamic graciloplasty' (transposition of the gracilis muscle around the anal canal and implantation of intramuscular electrodes connected with an implanted pulse generator, 6 weeks later) to achieve continence. We measured the gracilis muscle diameter immediately after transposition and before implantation of the stimulation device. It was found that gracilis diameter decreased from 12 (5 days after transposition) to 8 mm, 6 weeks later (mean decrease: 4 mm (95% confidence interval 3.
