Br J Radiol

February 2023

MUSC Medical Center, Charleston, United States.

Advances in imaging technology have dramatically increased the resolution of CT and improved detection of disease; these advances also have led to an increase in incidentalomas or incidental findings that often do not represent significant disease. Incidental findings on thoracic CT are common and can be problematic and expensive to evaluate. Thoracic imagers often are having to make recommendations for appropriate management which adds to the burden.

Assessment of venous thromboembolism risk and initiation of appropriate prophylaxis in psychiatric patients.

Ment Health Clin

March 2018

Clinical Specialist, Outcomes Management, MUSC Medical Center/South Carolina College of Pharmacy Residency Program, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Charleston, South Carolina.

Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis is not included among the measures for the Inpatient Psychiatric Facilities Quality Reporting Program. Evidence suggests that antipsychotic agents may be an independent risk factor for the development of VTE; therefore, development of a VTE risk stratification tool would improve the quality and safety of care for the psychiatric inpatient population. This study aims to develop clinically relevant criteria to assess VTE risk upon admission to an inpatient psychiatric hospital.

Office of Interprofessional Initiatives, Departments of Psychiatry, Anesthesia, and Stomatology, Behavioral Medicine, College of Medicine, MUSC, Charleston, South Carolina, USA.

Assessment of interprofessional education (IPE) frequently focuses on students' learning outcomes including changes in knowledge, skills, and/or attitudes. While a foundational education in the values and information of their chosen profession is critical, interprofessional learning follows a continuum from formal education to practice. The continuum increases in significance and complexity as learning becomes more relationship based and dependent upon the ability to navigate complex interactions with patients, families, communities, co-workers, and others.

Patients are classified as high-risk if they meet one of the following criteria: receiving anticoagulation therapy, taking more than 10 scheduled medications upon admission, or readmission within the past 30 days. The goal of this study was to determine risk criteria specific to the malignant hematology (MH) and bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients.

The controversy regarding the use of electronic cigarettes as a possible modality for smoking cessation has grown in recent years. Epidemiologic surveys indicate that usage rates in both adults and adolescents have increased substantially as the popularity of these devices continues to rise. At present, there is a small but growing body of evidence studying the possible role that these "e-cigarettes" may have as a nicotine replacement tool.

The use of the "peritonitis rate" in the management of patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis is assuming importance in comparing the prowess of facilities, care givers and new innovations. For this to be a meaningful outcome measure, the type of infection (causative pathogen) must have less clinical significance than the number of infections during a time interval. The natural history of Staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas, and fungal peritonitis would not support that the outcome of an episode of peritonitis is independent of the causative pathogen.

Several studies have examined the prevalence of hepatitis B (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in a trauma population. To our knowledge, no one has reported on the prevalence of hepatitis C (HCV). We prospectively studied the prevalence of HCV, as well as HBV, HIV, and syphilis in our adult regional level I trauma center population.
