Children and adults have been shown to benefit from sleep with regard to the consolidation of declarative memories. Especially during childhood, the generalisation of information from social and non-social contexts is important for adaptable behaviour in new situations and might show specific features in children. Here, we investigated whether adults (n = 18) and children (n = 19) differ in their generalisation of features assessed in wake and sleep conditions.

In recent years, organised and competitive video gaming, esports, has gained enormous popularity in many parts of the world, contributing to the growing professionalisation of this sports branch. To become or remain a professional esports player, individuals practice video gaming for several hours a day while remaining in a sitting posture which may not only lead to a decrease in training quality in the short term (eg, due to cognitive fatigue) but also put them at a higher risk for negative health events in the long-term (eg, overuse injuries). Thus, interrupting periods of prolonged video gaming in a sitting posture with acute physical exercise is strongly recommended for esports players even though the optimal dosage of acute physical exercise breaks remains unclear.

Dissociative identity disorder is the most severe of the dissociative disorders and neither the trauma model nor the sociocognitive model provide a satisfactory account of its complexity. Transtheoretical models propose an interaction of traumatic experiences as well as cultural, cognitive, and social factors in the development of the disorder. This perspective has important implications for the treatment which should encompass a reprocessing of traumatic memories, emotional regulation skills, and a modification of dysfunctional beliefs about memory.

The circadian clock generates 24 h rhythms in behavioural, cellular and molecular processes. Malfunctions of the clock are associated with enhanced susceptibility to cancer, worse treatment response and poor prognosis. Clock-controlled genes are involved in cellular processes associated with tumour development and progression including metabolism of drugs and the cell cycle.

Almost seventy years after the discovery of the mechanisms of action potential generation, some aspects of their computational consequences are still not fully understood. Based on mathematical modeling, we here explore a type of action potential dynamics - arising from a saddle-node homoclinic orbit bifurcation - that so far has received little attention. We show that this type of dynamics is to be expected by specific changes in common physiological parameters, like an elevation of temperature.

Background: While witnessing the suffering of other people results in personal distress, it is not clear whether regulating others' emotions in such situations also comes at an emotional cost for the observer.
Methods: This study included 62 subjects and used a newly developed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) paradigm to investigate mechanisms of self and other emotion regulation via reappraisal while the subject and an interaction partner outside the scanner were facing the same distressing situation simultaneously. The relationship between distress levels and individual differences in emotional and cognitive empathy were also assessed.

Although much research has shown that mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) can reduce psychological stress, it is less clear if effects generalize to everyday social situations, which range among the largest stress triggers. Furthermore, mechanisms of MBIs have not been fully established. Emotion regulation (ER) has been suggested as one key mechanism, yet the role of cognitive reappraisal and acceptance strategies is still under debate.

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are an essential aspect of the assessment of patients with peripheral neuropathies. However, conventional NCS do not reflect activation of small afferent fibers, including Aδ and C fibers. A definitive gold standard for laboratory evaluation of these fibers is still needed and therefore, clinical evaluation remains fundamental in patients with small fiber neuropathies (SFN).

Methodological studies investigating transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) in paediatric populations are limited. Therefore, we investigated in a paediatric population whether stimulation success of multichannel tDCS over the lDLPFC depends on concurrent task performance and individual head anatomy. In a randomised, sham-controlled, double-blind crossover study 22 healthy participants (10-17 years) received 2 mA multichannel anodal tDCS (atDCS) over the lDLPFC with and without a 2-back working memory (WM) task.

Scheduling anticancer drug administration over 24 h may critically impact treatment success in a patient-specific manner. Here, we address personalization of treatment timing using a novel mathematical model of irinotecan cellular pharmacokinetics and -dynamics linked to a representation of the core clock and predict treatment toxicity in a colorectal cancer (CRC) cellular model. The mathematical model is fitted to three different scenarios: mouse liver, where the drug metabolism mainly occurs, and two human colorectal cancer cell lines representing an experimental system for human colorectal cancer progression.

Switching between two or more tasks is a key component in our modern world. Task switching, however, requires time-consuming executive control processes and thus produces performance costs when compared to task repetitions. While executive control during task switching has been associated with activation in the lateral prefrontal cortex (lPFC), only few studies so far have investigated the causal relation between lPFC activation and task-switching performance by modulating lPFC activation.

During pregnancy and after birth, women and men may experience symptoms of psychological distress. The most common symptoms comprise pregnancy-related anxiety and fear of childbirth as well as elevated levels of depression throughout the peripartum period. Particularly burdened populations, such as parents of premature infants, are also likely to experience greatly increased stress levels.

Bonding of (expectant) parents with their child is of great importance for the psychological well-being of both the parents and the child. This is especially true if parents suffer from mental health problems like depression. Furthermore, attachment experiences during early childhood can affect both the child's mental health as well as later relationships.

The hypothalamic neuropeptides oxytocin (OT) and arginine-vasopressin (AVP) are important factors involved in the control of socio-emotional behaviors via their modulation of amygdala functions. Since anatomical pathways of magnocellular projections to limbic structures in the human brain have not been dissected, we infused ethanol-dissolved tracer DiI into three amygdala nuclei - medial, central and lateral nuclei, and into the mammillary bodies of postmortem fixed human brains. With this modification, lipophilic diffusion of DiI occurred much faster than with conventional DiI crystals.
