Forming a complete picture of the relationship between neural activity and skeletal kinematics requires quantification of skeletal joint biomechanics during free behavior; however, without detailed knowledge of the underlying skeletal motion, inferring limb kinematics using surface-tracking approaches is difficult, especially for animals where the relationship between the surface and underlying skeleton changes during motion. Here we developed a videography-based method enabling detailed three-dimensional kinematic quantification of an anatomically defined skeleton in untethered freely behaving rats and mice. This skeleton-based model was constrained using anatomical principles and joint motion limits and provided skeletal pose estimates for a range of body sizes, even when limbs were occluded.

Whether head size and/or biological sex influence proxies of white matter (WM) microstructure such as fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) remains controversial. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) indices are also associated with age, but there are large discrepancies in the spatial distribution and timeline of age-related differences reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations between intracranial volume (ICV), sex, and age and DTI indices from WM in a population-based study of healthy individuals (n = 812) aged 50-66 in the Nord-Trøndelag health survey.

Purpose: This study analyzes the effects of retrospective lipid suppression, a simulated macromolecular prior knowledge and different spline baseline stiffness values on 9.4T multi-slice proton FID-MRSI data spanning the whole cerebrum of human brain and the reproducibility of respective metabolite ratio to total creatine (/tCr) maps for 10 brain metabolites.
Methods: Measurements were performed twice on 5 volunteers using a short TR and TE FID MRSI 2D sequence at 9.

3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "Ecstasy") is a serotonin- and noradrenaline-releasing substance, currently among the most widely used illicit substances worldwide. In animal studies, repeated exposure to MDMA has been associated with dendritic but also axonal degeneration in the brain. However, translation of the axonal findings, specifically, to humans has been repeatedly questioned and the few existing studies investigating white matter alterations in human chronic MDMA users have yielded conflicting findings.

Purpose: To evaluate the usage of three-dimensional (3D) presaturated TurboFLASH (satTFL) for and mapping on single channel and parallel transmission (pTx) systems.
Methods: maps recorded with 3D satTFL were compared to maps from three other 3D mapping sequences in an agar phantom. Furthermore, individual-channel maps of 18 human subjects were recorded with 3D satTFL using interferometry.

Background: Huppke-Brendel (HB) syndrome is an autosomal recessive disease caused by variants in the gene. Since 2012, less than ten patients have been reported, none survived year six. With neurologic involvement and ceruloplasmin deficiency, it may mimic Wilson disease (WD).

Number processing abilities are important for academic and personal development. The course of initial specialization of ventral occipito-temporal cortex (vOTC) sensitivity to visual number processing is crucial for the acquisition of numeric and arithmetic skills. We examined the visual N1, the electrophysiological correlate of vOTC activation across five time points in kindergarten (T1, mean age 6.

Central nervous system tumors are the most common pediatric solid tumors; they are also the most lethal. Unlike adults, childhood brain tumors are mostly primary in origin and differ in type, location and molecular signature. Tumor characteristics (incidence, location, and type) vary with age.

Purpose: To improve whole-brain SNR at 7 Tesla, a novel 32-element hybrid human head array coil was developed, constructed, and tested.
Methods: Our general design strategy is based on 2 major ideas: Firstly, following suggestions of previous works based on the ultimate intrinsic SNR theory, we combined loops and dipoles for improvement of SNR near the head center. Secondly, we minimized the total number of array elements by using a hybrid combination of transceive (TxRx) and receive (Rx) elements.

Crotamine is a lysine and cysteine rich 42 amino acids long bio-active polypeptide, isolated from the venom of a South American rattlesnake, that can also be used as cell penetrating peptide. A facile synthetic scheme for coupling cargo molecules like fluorophores (carboxyfluorescein) or MRI probes (Gd-DO3A-based macrocycle) is presented. The toxicity, cellular internalization and steady-state accumulation after long-term incubation for 18 h, as well as magnetic resonance relaxivities and cellular relaxation rates of crotamine based probes were evaluated and compared to its shorter synthetic fragment CyLoP-1.

Background: The most-commonly used multi-slice Simpson's method employed with routine two-dimensional segmented cine images makes it difficult to evaluate left ventricular (LV) volume and function due to endocardial border blurring and beat-to-beat variation during atrial fibrillation (AF) status.
Objectives: To assess the feasibility of compressed sensing real-time (CSRT) cine imaging combined with an area-length method for quantification of LV systolic function in normal sinus rhythm (NSR) and AF.
Methods: The CSRT cine sequence and routine segmented balanced Steady-State-Free-Precession cine sequence were performed in 71 patients with NSR ( = 36) or AF ( = 35).

MRS, including single-voxel spectroscopy and MR spectroscopic imaging, captures metabolites in high-grade gliomas. Emerging evidence indicates that 7T MRS may be more sensitive to aberrant metabolic activity than lower-field strength MRS. However, the literature on the use of 7T MRS to visualize high-grade gliomas has not been summarized.

A method to estimate phosphorus ( P) transversal relaxation times (T s) of coupled spin systems is demonstrated. Additionally, intracellular and extracellular pH and relaxation-corrected metabolite concentrations are reported. Echo time (TE) series of P metabolite spectra were acquired using stimulated echo acquisition mode (STEAM) localization.

Parametric mapping of the heart has become an essential part of many cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging exams, and is used for tissue characterization and diagnosis in a broad range of cardiovascular diseases. These pulse sequences are used to quantify the myocardial T, T, , and T relaxation times, which are unique surrogate indices of fibrosis, edema and iron deposition that can be used to monitor a disease over time or to compare patients to one another. Parametric mapping is now well-accepted in the clinical setting, but its wider dissemination is hindered by limited inter-center reproducibility and relatively long acquisition times.

The choice of materials challenges the development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) phantoms and, to date, is mainly limited to water-filled compartments or gel-based components. Recently, solid materials have been introduced through additive manufacturing (AM) to mimic complex geometrical structures. Nonetheless, no such manufactured solid materials are available with controllable MRI contrast to mimic organ substructures or lesion heterogeneities.

Background: Cone-beam breast computed tomography (CBBCT) and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) remain the main 3D modalities for X-ray breast imaging. This study aimed to systematically evaluate and meta-analyze the comparison of diagnostic accuracy of CBBCT and DBT to characterize breast cancers.
Methods: Two independent reviewers identified screening on diagnostic studies from 1 January 2015 to 30 December 2021, with at least reported sensitivity and specificity for both CBBCT and DBT.

Important issues in designing radiofrequency (RF) coils for human head imaging at ultra-high field (UHF; ≥7 T) are the inhomogeneity and longitudinal coverage (along the magnet axis) of the transmit (Tx) RF field. Both the homogeneity and coverage produced by Tx volume coils can be improved by means of three-dimensional (3D) RF shimming, which requires the use of multirow Tx-arrays. In addition, according to recent findings of the ultimate intrinsic signal-to-noise ratio (UISNR) theory, the loop-only receive (Rx) arrays do not provide optimal SNR near the brain center at UHF.
