Background: The increasing incidence of breast cancer necessitates the need to explore alternate screening strategies that circumvent the setbacks of conventional techniques especially among population that report earlier age at diagnosis. Serum autoantibodies is one such potential area of interest. However, their ubiquitous presence across cancer types limits its applicability to any one specific type of cancer.

Heart failure (HF) is a multi-morbid chronic condition, which adversely affects the quality of life of the affected individual. Engaging the patient and their caregivers in self-care is known to reduce mortality, rehospitalisation and improve quality of life among HF patients. The PACT-HF trial will answer whether clinical benefits in terms of mortality and hospitalisation outcomes can be demonstrated by using a pragmatic design to explore the specific effects of physical activity, and cognitive behavioural therapy in HF patients in India.

Background And Aims: A pilot study among anesthesiologists, revealed a wide variation among individual practices including skipping pre-anesthetic airway assessment during COVID-19 pandemic because of the fear of getting infected. Risk of infection during pre-anesthetic airway assessment has not been studied. The primary objective of the survey was to evaluate the practices of airway examination by anesthesiologists during this pandemic period.

The rising cost of cancer care has shed light on an important aspect of healthcare delivery. Financial toxicity of therapy must be considered in clinical practice and policy-making. One way to mitigate the impact of financial toxicity of cancer care is by focusing on an approach of healthcare delivery that aims to deliver value to the patient.

Article Synopsis
  • - The ISCHEMIA-CKD study found that an invasive treatment strategy did not lower the risk of death or nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI) compared to a conservative treatment strategy in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease and stable coronary disease.
  • - MI types were classified using established definitions, revealing a 3-year incidence rate of 11.2% for invasive and 13.6% for conservative strategies, with procedural MIs being more common in the invasive group.
  • - Both type 1 and procedural MIs were associated with significantly increased risks of all-cause death and the initiation of dialysis, highlighting the serious implications of these heart events in patients undergoing different treatment strategies.

Comprehensive characterization of immune landscape of Indian and Western triple negative breast cancers.

Transl Oncol

November 2022

Division of Molecular Pathology, The Institute of Cancer Research, London, UK; Centre for Translational Immunotherapy, Division of Radiotherapy and Imaging, The Institute of Cancer Research, London, UK; Centre for Global Oncology, Division of Molecular Pathology, The Institute of Cancer Research, 15 Cotswold Road, Sutton, London SM2 5NG, UK. Electronic address:

Purpose: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogeneous disease with a significant challenge to effectively manage in the clinic worldwide. Immunotherapy may be beneficial to TNBC patients if responders can be effectively identified. Here we sought to elucidate the immune landscape of TNBCs by stratifying patients into immune-specific subtypes (immunotypes) to decipher the molecular and cellular presentations and signaling events of this heterogeneous disease and associating them with their clinical outcomes and potential treatment options.

Arthroscopic Latarjet has evolved as a reproducible procedure to address significant anterior glenoid bone loss in recurrent anterior instability of the shoulder joint. While arthroscopic Bankart procedure for anterior shoulder instability has changed from metal anchors to absorbable or soft all-suture anchors to avoid metal-ware and subsequent abrasion in cases of osteolysis or backout, Latarjet procedure, until recently couple of titanium screws were used to fix the coracoid bone to the anterior glenoid. Arthroscopic techniques for Latarjet procedure of coracoid bone transfer have shown results similar to the open technique in many recent studies.

Effect of Umbilical Cord Milking on Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes in a Tertiary Care Hospital in South India: A Randomized Control Trial.

J Obstet Gynaecol India

August 2022

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MOSC Medical College, Kolenchery, Ernakulam, Kerala 682311 India.

Background And Aim: Umbilical cord milking (UCM) has been theorized to increase placental blood transfusion then again, the optimal method of cord clamping at birth is still contested. We aimed to analyse the effects of UCM on the neonatal haematological parameters at 72 h and 6 weeks of age and its association with any adverse effects.

Materials And Methods: In this randomized control trial, mothers ≥ 34 weeks were randomized into two arms.

Background: The new drug approval in every country is closely monitored and regulated by central authorities which regulates drug development, approval, and marketing. In this study, we aim to analyze and compare the approval status of drugs that are approved for medical use in India by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) with the drug approval organizations of Western Countries.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study.

Spontaneous neck hematoma is a rare but life threatening condition which poses a challenge in clinical decision making. With the unsupervised outpatient use of oral anticoagulants, including newer generation ones and the thromboprophylaxis in  Covid-19 treatment protocol, the risk of developing spontaneous neck hematoma is high. In this context, our case series aimed at studying the clinicopathological profile, treatment options and outcome in patients presented with spontaneous neck hematoma in a tertiary care center.

Purpose: Comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) assay is increasingly used in low-middle-income countries to detect clinically relevant genomic alterations despite its clinical benefits not being well known. Here, we describe the proportion of patients with advanced cancer in India who received targeted therapy for an actionable genetic alteration identified on CGP assays.

Methods: This was a multicenter, retrospective cohort study in adult patients with advanced nonhematologic malignancies who underwent a CGP test.

Background: Neuromuscular weakness may manifest subsequent to critical illness in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. This weakness termed as "ICU-acquired weakness" (ICUAW) has a significant bearing on the length of mechanical ventilation, duration of ICU stays, long-term disability, and survival rate. Early identification of ICUAW helps in planning appropriate strategies, as well as in predicting the prognosis and long-term outcomes of these patients.

Aims: Data on the burden of acute heart failure (AHF) admissions, practice patterns, and outcomes are rare from India and other low- and middle-income countries. We aimed to describe the baseline characteristics, guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) prescribing patterns and 90-day mortality rates in patients admitted with AHF in Kerala, India.

Methods And Results: The Cardiology Society of India-Kerala Acute Heart Failure Registry (CSI-KHFR) is an observational registry from 50 hospitals in Kerala, India, with prospective follow-up.

Polycythemia Vera Presenting as Hemorrhagic Stroke.

J Neurosci Rural Pract

July 2021

Department of Neurology, MOSC Medical College, Kolenchery, Kochi, Kerala, India.

Patients with polycythemia vera are at high risk for vaso-occlusive events including cerebral ischemia and hemorrhage. Cerebral ischemic events are due to increased blood viscosity and platelet activation within the central nervous system arterial vessels. We present a case of a 65-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department with seizures followed by left-sided weakness.
