Buffered versus Non-buffered Local Anaesthesia in Minor Oral Surgery - A Comparative Study.

Ann Maxillofac Surg

July 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, MNR Dental College and Hospital, Sangareddy, Telangana, India.

Introduction: Commercially available local anaesthetics are acidic solutions associated with the vasopressor sting on injection, relatively slower onset of action and pain during palatal injections. The above drawbacks can be addressed by anaesthetic buffering. This prospective study was aimed at comparing the efficacy of buffered and non-buffered local anaesthesia in the extraction of grossly decayed maxillary molar teeth in relation to pain on local infiltration, onset and duration of action of local anaesthesia.

Background: The gingival biotype (GB) influences treatment planning and clinical outcomes in several dental specialties. This study aimed to investigate the associations between the GB and various clinical crown and periodontal parameters, such as probing depth (PD), papillary height (PH), keratinized tissue width (KTW), crown width/crown length ratio (CW/CL), and gingival thickness (GT). The secondary objective was to evaluate the optimal cutoff values for all parameters to determine the GB in both the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of p120 catenin in the development and progression of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas (OSCC) by comparing its expression in OSCC tissues and adjacent apparently normal mucosa (ANMAOSCC).
  • Results showed that over 80% of OSCC cases expressed p120, while all ANMAOSCC samples maintained expression, highlighting a significant difference in the cellular localization of p120 between the two groups.
  • The atypical staining pattern of p120 in OSCC suggests a loss of cell adhesion and may serve as a potential biomarker for assessing the malignant potential of these tumors.

Purpose: To evaluate the surface, compositional, and histological changes in the overlying soft tissues of retrieved stainless-steel mini-plates and screws used for rigid internal fixation in the maxillofacial skeleton.

Materials And Method: A prospective study was conducted comprising 60 patients who sustained maxillofacial trauma and underwent ORIF in our unit previously and who required hardware retrieval in the post-operative phase. The retrieved hardware was evaluated for surface and compositional changes with the help of a scanning electron microscope for surface roughness and corrosion changes.

Background and objectives Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a condition that affects the oral cavity and is characterized by the development of fibrous bands in the submucosal layers, leading to progressive difficulty in mouth opening and other symptoms. Inflammation and advancing fibrosis of the submucosal tissues are the hallmarks of this chronic, disabling illness of the oral cavity. The disorder is well known for having a propensity for cancer and is particularly linked to the habit of chewing tobacco and areca nuts.
