Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division, Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, Illinois 60439, United States.

A layered lithium-rich manganese-based oxide cathode, containing 3̅ (LiTMO, TM = Mn, Ni, Co) and 2/ (LiMnO) nanodomains, utilizes both transition metals and oxygen redox to yield substantial energy density. However, the inherent heterogeneous nature and distinct nanodomain redox chemistries of layered lithium-rich oxides will inevitably cause pernicious lattice strain and structural displacement, which can hardly be eliminated by conventional doping or coating strategies and result in accelerated performance decay. Herein, we incorporate a strain-inhibiting perovskite phase coherently grown within the layered structure to effectively restrain the displacement and lattice strain during uneven Li-ion extraction.

In the CO reduction reactions (CORR), the product selectivity is strongly dependent on the binding energy differences of the key intermediates. Herein, we systematically evaluated the CORR reaction pathways on single transition metal atom doped catalysts TMCu/CuO by density functional theory (DFT) methods and found that *CO is more likely to undergo C-O bond cleavage rather than be hydrogenated on TMCu/CuO (TM = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co), which facilitates C production with a low-energy pathway of OC-C coupling, while it prefers to be hydrogenated to form CHO on TMCu/CuO (TM = Ni, Cu). The defects of Cu in TMCu/CuO were confirmed to enhance the production of ethanol.

Chronic exposure to manganese (Mn) induces manganism and has been widely implicated as a contributing environmental factor to Parkinson's disease (PD), featuring notable overlaps between the two in motor symptoms and clinical hallmarks. Here, we developed an adult model of Mn toxicity that recapitulated key parkinsonian features, spanning behavioral deficits, neuronal loss, and dysfunctions in lysosomes and mitochondria. Metabolomics analysis of the brain and body tissues of these flies at an early stage of toxicity identified systemic changes in the metabolism of biotin (also known as vitamin B) in Mn-treated groups.

High-Energy Aqueous Sodium-Ion Batteries Using Water-in-Salt Electrolytes and 3D Structured Electrodes.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California 90095, United States.

Aqueous sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are gradually being recognized as viable solutions for large-scale energy storage because of their inherent safety as well as low cost. However, despite recent advancements in water-in-salt electrolyte technologies, the challenge of identifying anode materials with sufficient specific capacity persists, complicating the wider adoption of these batteries. This study introduces an innovative and straightforward approach for synthesizing vanadium oxide laser-scribed graphene (VO-LSG) composites, which function as effective anode materials in aqueous sodium-ion batteries.

Background: A vast amount of literature is available on the burden of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Yet, most information on AIS burden does not stratify by stroke severity, and the inclusion of mild strokes (National Institute of Health Stroke Scale < 5) might obscure the true impact of moderate-to-severe AIS. Therefore, it is important to understand the literature as it pertains to the epidemiological, clinical, humanistic, and economic burden of moderate-to-severe AIS from a global perspective.

Ultrahigh nickel cathode materials are widely utilized due to their outstanding energy and power densities. However, the presence of cobalt can cause significant lattice distortion during charge and discharge cycles, leading to the loss of active lithium, the formation of lattice cracks, and the emergence of a rock salt phase that hinders lithium-ion transport. Herein, we developed a novel cobalt-free, aluminum-doped cathode material, LiNiMnAlO (NMA), which effectively delays the harmful H2-H3 phase transition, reduces lattice distortion, alleviates stress release, and significantly enhances structural stability.
