Over the past 85 years, the mission of the FDA's Center for Device and Radiologic Health has been to provide safe medical devices for the US consumer, and to adapt the regulatory standards to meet the needs of the rapidly evolving medical device industry. This brief report is the historical account of two investigational devices dating back to 2006, the devices never receiving FDA approval for use in patients during a clinical trial, and the patients never received informed consent.

Background: Vegetables play critical role in human nutrition and overall health. However, consumption of vegetables cultivated through wastewater-impacted river can be source of potentially toxic heavy metals, which can cause detrimental health effects when their concentration exceeds the recommended maximum levels. Despite growing body of evidence highlighting the dangers associated with heavy metal accumulation in vegetables, there remains critical gap in systematic assessments within Ethiopian context.

Introduction: Pharmacological studies have shown that the rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. (Compositae), commonly known as atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (AMR), can modulate immunity. Nevertheless, its resources have been largely depleted, and the pharmacological activity of artificial AMR is relatively modest.

This paper presents the preparation of the parental experimental alloy, featuring a standard composition of TiYZrFeNiMn, via the vacuum induction melting technique. Subsequently, the TiYZrFeNiMn alloy, with an addition of 2 wt% Ni, underwent mechanical ball milling to yield a TiFe-based composite for experimental purposes. The results of the experimental tests indicate that the composite alloy's phase composition comprises the TiFe primary phase, with a minor quantity of ZrMn phase segregated on the surface of the primary TiFe phase, as well as Ni phase.

Background And Aims: Bloodless surgical field during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is an essential part, and research continues to find simple and effective regime for it. This study was aimed to compare the efficacy of oral clonidine versus oral metoprolol as premedicants regarding surgical field condition and controlled hypotension in patients undergoing FESS.
Material And Methods: Sixty-eight patients of American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status (PS) I and II aged 18-60 years, of both genders, scheduled for FESS under general anesthesia were randomly allocated in two groups.

Background And Aims: Emergence agitation (EA) is frequently encountered following nasal surgeries, and postoperative pain is a significant contributing element. We aimed to assess the role of suprazygomatic maxillary nerve (MN) block (SMB) guided by ultrasound (US) in lowering EA incidence and enhancing analgesia quality in septorhinoplasty cases.
Material And Methods: Sixty cases aged 18-60 years, of both genders, categorized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) I-II and listed for septorhinoplasty, were randomized to receive general anesthesia (GA) with either no block (the control group) or combined with bilateral US-guided SMB (the SMB group).

Background: Vertebrogenic pain is a documented source of anterior column chronic low back pain (CLBP) that stems from damaged vertebral endplates. Nociceptive signals are transmitted by the basivertebral nerve (BVN) and endplate damage is observed as Type 1 or Type 2 Modic changes (MC) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The clinical impact and safety of intraosseous radiofrequency ablation of the BVN (BVNA) for the treatment of vertebrogenic pain has been demonstrated in three prospective clinical trials (two randomized and one single-arm study).

This article presents a novel method for causal discovery with generalized structural equation models suited for analyzing diverse types of outcomes, including discrete, continuous, and mixed data. Causal discovery often faces challenges due to unmeasured confounders that hinder the identification of causal relationships. The proposed approach addresses this issue by developing two peeling algorithms (bottom-up and top-down) to ascertain causal relationships and valid instruments.

The differentiation of wide complex tachycardias (WCTs) into ventricular tachycardia (VT) and supraventricular wide tachycardia (SWCT) via 12-lead ECG (electrocardiogram) interpretation is a crucial yet demanding clinical task. Decades of research have been dedicated to simplifying and improving this differentiation via manual algorithms. Despite such research, the effectiveness of such algorithms still remains limited, primarily due to reliance on user expertise.

Objective: To evaluate the use of complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) among a low-income population with mental health diagnoses and to assess differences in social determinants of health (SDOH) on the basis of CIM use.
Patients And Methods: We surveyed patients with mental health diagnoses and/or substance use disorders during outpatient evaluations between August 11, 2020, and November 18, 2021, at a community behavioral health center in Rochester, MN. We measured knowledge of current CIM, interest in future use of CIM, and SDOH.

Medical devices, 3D printing, and virtual reality are increasingly integral components of medical practice to improve patient outcomes. Physicians engage directly with clinical challenges but may need more training to develop innovations that prioritize patient-centered design. To bridge the gap, hands-on clerkships were implemented to develop foundational skills related to emerging medical technologies.

Introduction: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder affecting a significant portion of the population, is commonly managed with stimulant medications. These medications, while effective, have been associated with thermoregulatory dysfunction and an increased risk of heat-related adverse events. The current study sought to compare the incidence of such events in ADHD patients receiving stimulant medications with those not on these treatments.

Objective: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake remains suboptimal. Our stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial found that reminder-recall letters sent to parents of age-eligible children significantly increased vaccine uptake compared to usual care. Subsequently, we conducted a process evaluation to assess the mechanisms of the letter's effectiveness.

During the last decades, Arabidopsis seed mucilage has been extensively studied to gain insight into the metabolism of pectin, hemicellulose and cellulose. This review aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the techniques used to understand the composition and structure of mucilage. Moreover, we present novel findings from mucilage analysis, including the separation of pectic domains within the mucilage, offering a fresh perspective on utilizing traditional techniques to analyze mucilage mutant lines.

Members of the genus including Jurona virus (JURV) have emerged as promising immunotherapeutic agents, characterized by their tumor selectivity, fast kinetics, low seroprevalence, and minimal toxicity in humans. Here, we demonstrate that the administration of JURV leads to tumor regression in both hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) xenograft and syngeneic models. Furthermore, our findings indicate that combining JURV and anti-PD-1 therapy reduced tumor burden and improved survival rates over JURV or anti-PD-1 alone in an orthotopic HCC model.

Novel strategies are needed for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke when revascularization therapies are not clinically appropriate or are unsuccessful. rKLK1 (recombinant human tissue kallikrein-1), a bradykinin-producing enzyme, offers a promising potential solution. In animal studies of acute stroke, there is a marked 36-fold increase in bradykinin B2 receptor on brain endothelial cells of the ischemic region.

MAX (MAX) phases are a novel class of materials with a closely packed hexagonal structure that bridge the gap between metals and ceramics, garnering tremendous research interest worldwide in recent years. Benefiting from their unique layered structure and mixed covalent-ionic-metallic bonding characteristics, MAX phase coatings possess excellent oxidation resistance, and exceptional electrical and thermal conductivities, making them highly promising for applications in advanced nuclear materials, battery plate protection materials, and aero-engine functional materials. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of MAX phase coatings.
