Introduction: Binge Eating Disorder (BED) has high lifetime prevalence rates, low treatment success rates, and high rates of treatment dissatisfaction, early discontinuation of care, and recurrence. Complementary and integrative health (CIH) interventions (non-mainstream practices used with conventional approaches for whole-person treatment) hold potential to overcome many treatment barriers and improve BED treatment outcomes. Some CIH interventions have empirical support for use in eating disorders.

A series of biomass-based linear aliphatic polyesters are synthesized by combining sebacic acid (SA) (C10 diacid) and 1,18-octadecanedioic acid (OA) (C18 diacid) with a series of diols with varied alkyl chain lengths (C2 to C10 diols). SA and OA are obtainable from castor oil and palm oil, respectively. The reaction extent (polymerization extent) is high (≥96%) in all cases, and the number-average molecular weight (M) is 10 000-43 000 g mol after purification.

The local structure plays a crucial role in oxygen redox reactions, which boosts the capacity of layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries. While studies on local structural ordering have primarily focused on the intra-layer ordering, there has been limited research on the inter-layer stacking for the layered cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. In this work, the impact of the intra-layer and inter-layer local structural regulation on anionic kinetics and the structure stability are explored through experimental analysis and theoretical calculations.

In simulations of groundwater flow through dipping aquifers, layers of model cells are often "deformed" to follow the top and bottom elevations of the aquifers. When this approach is used in MODFLOW, adjacent cells within the same model layer are vertically offset from one another, and the standard conductance-based (two-point) formulation for flow between cells does not rigorously account for these offsets. The XT3D multi-point flow formulation in MODFLOW 6 is designed to account for geometric irregularities in the grid, including vertical offsets, and to provide accurate results for both isotropic and anisotropic groundwater flow.

Single-atom nanozymes with intelligent response to pathological microenvironments for bacterially infected wound healing.

Biomater Sci

January 2025

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Brain Science and Neural Engineering, Academy of Medical Engineering and Translational Medicine, Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072, China.

Wound healing is a complex and dynamic process often accompanied by bacterial infection, inflammation, and excessive oxidative stress. Single-atom nanozymes with multi-enzymatic activities show significant potential for promoting the healing of infected wounds by modulating their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in response to the wound's physiological environment. In this study, we synthesized MN single-atom nanozymes with multi-enzymatic activities that intelligently respond to pH value changes in the wound healing process.

Female individuals who are post-menopausal present with higher incidence of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) than male counterparts; however, the mechanisms underlying this disparity are unknown. The most commonly used preclinical models lack human-relevant menopausal phenotypes, which may contribute to our incomplete understanding of sex-specific differences in KOA pathogenesis. Here we chemically induced menopause in middle-aged (14-16 months) C57/BL6N female mice.

The associations between cardiovascular and pain responses to a cold pressor test differ between males and females.

Eur J Appl Physiol

January 2025

Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, Carver College of Medicine, the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, 52242, USA.

Nociceptors contribute to the cardiovascular responses during a cold pressor test (CPT). While these responses are lower in females, data suggest that they perceive the CPT as more painful. Thus, we examined sex differences in associations between pain and cardiovascular responses to a CPT (Aim 1) as well as differences between females using (OC), and not using (NC), an oral contraceptive (Aim 2).

Purpose: Two randomized clinical trials (STOMP and ORIOLE) demonstrated that stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) can prolong ADT-free survival or progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with metachronous oligometastatic prostate cancer (omCSPC) patients. While most omCSPC patients have a more modest delay in progression, a small subset achieves a durable response following SABR. We investigated the prognostic and predictive value of circulating PSMA-positive extracellular vesicles (PSMA+EV) and prostate specific antigen (PSA) in a biomarker correlative study using blood samples from three independent patient cohorts.

1. Analysis of co-occurrence data with traditional indices has led to many problems such as sensitivity of the indices to prevalence and the same value representing either a strong positive or strong negative association across different datasets. In our recent study (Mainali et al 2022), we revealed the source of the problems that make the traditional indices fundamentally flawed and unreliable-namely that the indices in common use have no target of estimation quantifying degree of association in the non-null case-and we further developed a novel parameter of association, alpha, with complete formulation of the null distribution for estimating the mechanism of affinity.

Background And Hypothesis: The PLA2R antibody test is a valuable first-line diagnostic tool for primary membranous nephropathy (MN), helping to identify PLA2R-related MN and potentially eliminating the need for a kidney biopsy in some individuals. By reducing the reliance on biopsies, the test streamlines diagnosis and improves patient care. However, determining the optimal PLA2R measurement method and cut-off is critical to maximising the benefits of the test and minimising any harms.

Earthquakes are produced by the propagation of rapid slip along tectonic faults. The propagation dynamics is governed by a balance between elastic stored energy in the surrounding rock, and dissipated energy at the propagating tip of the slipping patch. Energy dissipation is dictated by the mechanical behaviour of the fault, which is itself the result of feedbacks between thermo-hydro-mechanical processes acting at the mm to sub-mm scale.
