The changes in the inclusions in 316L stainless steel before and after Ce addition were studied by adding different contents of Ce. The effects of rare earth Ce treatment on the modification of MnS inclusions in steel and the pitting corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel are studied by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, laser confocal microscopy, the 6% FeCl corrosion weight loss test, and Tafel polarization curve test. The results show that the addition of Ce reduces the corrosion rate of stainless steel in 6% FeCl solution, and reduces the number and size of corrosion pits.

Forging additive hybrid manufacturing integrated the high efficiency of forging and the great flexibility of additive manufacturing, which has significant potential in the construction of reactor pressure vessels (RPVs). In the components, the heat-affected zone (HAZ, also called as bonding zone) between the forged substrate zone and the arc deposition zone was key to the final performance of the components. In this study, the Mn-Mo-Ni welding wire was deposited on the 16MnD5 substrate with a submerged arc heat source.

Soil amendments combined with low cadmium (Cd)-accumulating crops are commonly used for remediating Cd contamination and ensuring food safety. However, the combined effects of soil amendments and the cultivation of faba beans ( L.)-known for their high nutritional quality and low Cd accumulation-in moderately Cd-contaminated soils remain underexplored.

Small abandoned mining areas of Fe and Mn oxides located in the Portuguese sector of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW of Europe) have been converted into agrosilvopastoral systems with very few environmental management measures after their closure. Although at the landscape scale, no visible differences were observed between the former mining intervention areas and adjacent areas, it is essential to assess the state and environmental risk of the soil-plant system, especially in the herbaceous pastures grazed by domestic animals. This was carried out in the Ferragudo mining area, where an agrosilvopastoral system, composed of holm oak and dryland pasture, had been established after the closure of the mine at ≈45 years.

The contamination of rivers by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is a problem of global importance. The Valles River is Ciudad Valles' (Central Mexico) main source of drinking water. During the four seasons of the year, water samples (n = 6), sediment samples (n = 6), and plants (n = 10) were taken from three study sites selected based on the presence of anthropogenic activities in the Valles River.

The kinetics of anthracene hydrogenation was studied using the method of equilibrium kinetic analysis. To determine the diffusion-kinetic characteristics, anthracene hydrogenation was performed at different temperatures (648 K, 673 K, 698 K), at a hydrogen pressure of 3 MPa in the presence of a mixture of pyrite (FeS) and aluminum oxide (AlO) taken at a ratio of 1:1. Chromatographic analysis of anthracene hydrogenation products showed the presence of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA), 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroanthracene (THA), methylnaphthalene (MN), naphthalene (H) and other unidentified compounds.

The total cross-sections for the single electron-impact ionization of pyrimidine (CHN), 2-chloropyrimidine (2-CHClN), 5-chloropyrimidine (5-CHClN), 2-bromopyrimidine (2-CHBrN) and 5-bromopyrimidine (5-CHBrN) molecules have been calculated with the binary-encounter-Bethe model from the ionization threshold up to 5 keV. The input data for the BEB calculations concerning electronic structure of the studied targets have been obtained with quantum chemical methods including the Hartree-Fock (H-F) and the outer valence Green function (OVGF) methods. The calculated cross-section for the ionization of the pyrimidine molecules due to electron impact is compared with available experimental and theoretical data.

Background: Saliva is a protein-rich body fluid for noninvasive discovery of biomolecules, containing both human and microbial components, associated with various chronic diseases. Type-2 diabetes (T2D) imposes a significant health and socio-economic burden. Prior research on T2D salivary microbiome utilized methods such as metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, 16S rRNA sequencing, and low-throughput proteomics.

Background: To investigate the association between lumbar degenerative scoliosis and the dural sac cross-sectional area (DSCA), the lumbar canal anterior-posterior (LCAP) diameter, and the neural foraminal cross-sectional area (NFCA) in relation to facet joint tropism (FJT).
Methods: In a retrospective case-control study, we analyzed data from 160 patients referred for lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between January 2020 and December 2022. Cobb's angle on anteroposterior lumbosacral X-ray is served to identify the presence of degenerative lumbar scoliosis-Cobb's angle exceeding 10 degrees-, and axial T2W MRI is implemented to evaluate facet joint angles and tropism-defined as a difference exceeding 10 degrees between the facet joint angles at each level-, DSCA, LCAP, and NFCA.

Designing catalysts with well-defined, identical sites that achieve site-specific selectivity, and activity remains a significant challenge. In this work, we introduce a design principle of topological-single-atom catalysts (T-SACs) guided by density functional theory (DFT) and Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations, where metal single atoms are arranged in asymmetric configurations that electronic shield topologically misorients d orbitals, minimizing unwanted interactions between reactants and the support surface. Mn/CeO catalysts, synthesized via a charge-transfer-driven approach, demonstrate superior catalytic activity and selectivity for NO removal.

Regeneration of the multiple tissues and interfaces in the periodontal complex necessitates multidisciplinary evaluation to establish structure/function relationships. This article, an initiative of the Academy of Dental Materials, provides guidance for performing chemical, structural, and mechanical characterization of materials for periodontal tissue regeneration, and outlines important recommendations on methods of testing bioactivity, biocompatibility, and antimicrobial properties of biomaterials/scaffolds for periodontal tissue engineering. First, we briefly summarize periodontal tissue engineering fabrication methods.

cGAS-STING pathway activation has attracted considerable attention in antitumor immunotherapy, but clinical outcomes lag behind expectations due to overlooked negative feedback mechanisms. Here, we determine that STING activation promotes tumor stemness, which weakens the efficacy of STING-based therapies, presenting a double-edged sword. To address this therapeutic paradox, a simple metal-phenolic polymeric micelle (HMQ) was developed, in which Mn (a STING agonist) is coordinated with quercetin (a stemness inhibitor) and hyaluronic acid (HA), to unlock the full therapeutic potential of the cGAS-STING pathway.

Due to their diverse chemical properties and high ability to interact with biological molecules and cellular processes, transition metal-based compounds have emerged as promising candidates for cancer therapy. Iron complexes are among them, however, there is a gap in the comprehensive analysis of heterometallic iron complexes in the anticancer field. This review aims to fill this gap by summarizing recent progress in the study of Fe(II) and Fe(III) heterobimetallic complexes for anticancer applications and to gather important insights and future perspectives, with special emphasis on their theranostic capabilities.

Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is a vascular disease characterized by exaggerated vasoconstriction in response to stressors, mainly cold and emotional stress. This vasoconstriction is mediated solely by alpha 2C-adrenoceptors (α-AR) expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells of dermal arterioles. Several factors, among which is cigarette smoking, are associated with aggravated symptoms of and increased risk for RP.
