Faced with nutritional stress, some bacteria form endospores capable of enduring extreme conditions for long periods of time; yet the function of many proteins expressed during sporulation remains a mystery. We identify one such protein, KapD, as a 3'-exoribonuclease expressed under control of the mother cell-specific transcription factors SigE and SigK in Bacillus subtilis. KapD dynamically assembles over the spore surface through a direct interaction with the major crust protein CotY.

Probiotics are widely used for their health promoting effects, though a lot remain to be discovered, particularly on their mechanisms of action at the molecular level. The functional genomic approach is an appropriate method to decipher how probiotics may influence human cell fate and therefore contribute to their health benefit. In the present work, we focused on Shouchella clausii (formerly named Bacillus then Alkalihalobacillus clausii), a spore-forming bacterium that is commercially available as a probiotic for the prevention and the treatment of intestinal dysbiosis and related gastrointestinal disorders, such as diarrhoea.

Coordinated actions of cells in microbial communities and multicellular organisms enable them to perform complex tasks otherwise difficult for single cells. This has inspired biological engineers to build cellular consortia for larger circuits with improved functionalities while implementing communication systems for coordination among cells. Here, we investigate the signalling dynamics of a phage-mediated synthetic DNA messaging system and couple it with CRISPR interference to build distributed circuits that perform logic gate operations in multicellular bacterial consortia.

Background: Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated allergy without known biomarkers. We aimed to compare fecal biomarkers related to gut inflammation and immunity in children with FPIES, with resolved FPIES (tolerant), and in matched controls.
Methods: Stools were collected from FPIES children on elimination diet, before and after an oral food challenge (OFC) performed to assess their natural tolerance, at the end of a follow-up in tolerant FPIES children, and in matched controls (1:1 ratio).

Elective and emergency Caesarean section (C-section) procedures are on the rise, exceeding the recommended guidelines by the World Health Organization. Higher morbidities and long-term health conditions are correlated to C-section deliveries, including neurodevelopmental disorders. During C-section delivery, newborns are not exposed to the vaginal commensal flora, which impedes the early establishment of the gut microbiota.

We evaluated the feasibility of using hydrogen (H)-based membrane biofilm reactors (MBfRs) to promote the growth of hydrogenotrophic sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to remove lead (Pb) through its precipitation as lead sulfide (PbS) via biogenic sulfide (HS) production. Two MBfRs (R1 and R2) were set-up to treat synthetic water rich in sulfate (SO) (585 mg/L) and Pb (50, 100, or 250 mg/L). R1 had one influent that had the Pb and synthetic media mixed together; R2 received the Pb solution and synthetic medium through separate influent lines.
