Prokaryotes (Bacteria and Archaea) encode a highly diversified arsenal of defence systems that protect them against mobile genetic elements, such as phages and plasmids. In turn, mobile genetic elements encode anti-defence systems that allow them to escape the activity of these defence systems. This has resulted in an evolutionary arms race in which defence systems and anti-defence systems evolve and adapt continuously, driving intriguing innovation and enormous diversification on both sides.

Recent molecular and metagenomic studies have revealed that the obligate anaerobic protist Blastocystis is found more prevalently and with higher subtype diversities in herbivore species than in carnivore species. However, information on wild carnivore species is scarce. Here, we investigated the presence of Blastocystis by molecular methods in fecal DNA samples of free-ranging and captive Iberian lynxes from Spain (n = 243) and Portugal (n = 30).

Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) produce the type 2 cytokines IL-5 and IL-13 and contribute to type 2 immune responses, such as allergic airway inflammation. However, specific drugs, especially traditional Chinese medicines, that target lung ILC2s have rarely been reported. Here, we demonstrate that triptolide ameliorates allergic airway inflammation by suppressing ILC2 activation.

Background: It has been demonstrated that COVID-19 vaccines confer significant protection, but temporal decay in the vaccine-induced antibodies has been reported; therefore, a third booster dose was considered. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II molecules act as antigen presenting structures, play critical roles in the formation of an efficient antibody response. The current study aimed to evaluate the anti-receptor binding domain (RBD) antibody response after the booster dose of SpikoGen® vaccine in individuals with a history of Sinopharm primary vaccination series and its association with HLA-DQB1 and -DRB alleles.

Aims: Over the recent decades, smoking among women has become an increasingly pressing public health challenge. Mounting evidence suggests that, compared to men, women's smoking is more strongly influenced by habitual responses to sensorimotor cues. To understand the brain mechanisms underlying the cessation challenges commonly reported by women who smoke, the present study used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to investigate sex-related volumetric differences in the dorsal striatum, a region implicated in habitual substance use behavior, and their associations with self-reported quit interest among daily smoking adults.

Acanthamoeba castellanii is a widespread unicellular eukaryote found in diverse environments, including tap water, soil, and swimming pools. It is responsible for severe infections, such as Acanthamoeba keratitis and granulomatous amebic encephalitis, particularly in individuals with immunocompromisation. The ability of protozoans to form dormant and persistent cysts complicates treatment, as current therapies are ineffective against cyst stages and suffer from poor specificity and side effects.
