Background: The body is in a continuous state of inflammatory burden due to local and systemic inflammation, which is triggered in periodontal tissues in response to microorganisms. A number of studies have linked periodontitis to systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease. Periodontal inflammation acts as a focus of infection, which can cause detrimental effects on distant target organs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to compare serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels among patients with oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), leukoplakia, and a control group to explore potential links to oral cancer.
  • OSMF and leukoplakia are recognized as precursors to oral malignancy, with OSMF showing a notable transformation rate in India; the research employs a specific immunoassay to measure IgA levels in patients.
  • Findings suggest that the immunological changes in OSMF and leukoplakia are similar to those in oral cancer, indicating these conditions may serve as indicators of an increased risk for malignancy and highlighting the importance of early detection.

Introduction: Wound closure methods have evolved, attributed to the armamentarium including the synthetic sutures, staples, surgical adhesive tapes and, most recently, the cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives. Cyanoacrylates have shown promising results in terms of aesthetic outcomes in other fields of surgery. The aim of this study is to compare the aesthetic value of Dermabond over Ethilon suture when used in case of facial surgical incisions.

Unlabelled: Odontogenic space infections are common in dental practice, characterized by localized abscess formation with potential to spread to adjacent anatomical spaces. Neurogenic involvement in odontogenic infections is primarily found to be associated with sensory nerve branches, however involvement of motor nerves in odontogenic space infection leading to facial asymmetry has not been widely reported. In this case report, the authors present an unusual finding of facial asymmetry due to isolated marginal mandibular nerve weakness in a patient with a submandibular space infection.

Context: Postoperative jaw physiotherapy in the form of mouth opening exercises is an integral part of surgical treatment in oral submucous fibrosis and temporomandibular joint ankylosis. The literature has outlined multiple physical therapy modalities and modifications to aid in assisted mouth-opening exercises.

Purpose: To overcome shortcomings associated with the use of conventional devices, the authors describe an innovative use and modification of a prefabricated soft silicone bite block/mouth prop as an adjunct to the devices to aid in achieving optimal mouth opening.

Peripheral ossifying fibroma is presented as an exophytic growth with a smooth surface. It is located mostly on the gingiva, and it is an unusual growth of gingiva that occurs after irritational trauma. It is seen in the later decade of life, with the calcifications in the lesion in advanced stages seen on radiographic images.

Cemento-osseous dysplasia is a subgroup of fibro-osseous dysplasia commonly invading the tooth-bearing regions of the mandible quite often. These bony pathologies are asymptomatic and are seen on radiographs as an incidental finding. Accurate diagnosis of periapical cemento-osseous dysplasia is very crucial as it will help in the proper management of the patient as the incorrect diagnosis can lead to the unnecessary endodontic treatment of the concerned teeth as it may be misdiagnosed as a periapical pathology.

J Prosthet Dent

February 2024

Associate Professor, Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, MGM Dental College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India; Doctoral Researcher, Department of Prosthetic Dentistry and Biomedical Materials Science, Hannover Medical School, Hanover, Germany; and Lower Saxony Centre for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research and Development (NIFE), Hanover Medical School, Hanover, Germany.

Statement Of Problem: Immediate implant placement with an immediate interim restoration is a well-established protocol. Nevertheless, a consensus regarding the impact of immediate interim restoration on peri-implant tissues around single dental implants is lacking.

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to address the research question: "Does the placement of an immediate interim restoration influence the mid-facial mucosal (MFM) marginal and interdental papilla (IDP) levels around single dental implants placed in the anterior esthetic region by using an immediate implant placement protocol?"

Material And Methods: A comprehensive literature search was made in the Medline/PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and Science Direct electronic databases for articles published in English evaluating the impact of immediate interim restoration on peri-implant tissues around single dental implants in the anterior esthetic region.

Introduction: Digital dentistry and advanced ceramic materials have been widely used but which material has a better esthetically durable outcome needs to be evaluated. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the difference in the translucency of CAD zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate and CAD lithium disilicate glass ceramics after being subjected to artificial aging.

Material And Methods: Two independent reviewers searched the MEDLINE/ PubMed, Embase, and EBSCO databases and the Google Scholar search engine for in-vitro studies published from January 2010 to May 2023 to identify relevant studies measuring the translucency of CAD ZLS and CAD lithium disilicate glass ceramics after being subjected to different artificial aging conditions using the coffee solution, 4% acetic acid, distilled water and UV aging.

The effect of chlorhexidine (CHX) digluconate, Betadine (BET), curcumin (CUR) on gingival wound healing is of interest to dental practitioners. Hence, we studied the average fibroblast viability % for each of the concentrations of CUR, BET and CHX over various time durations. It was found that mean percentage of viability of fibroblasts is high in CUR and low in CHX at all time periods while the mean percentage of viability of fibroblasts in BET 1% was greater than CHX but lower than CUR at all time periods.

Traumatic ulcerative granuloma with stromal eosinophilia (TUGSE) is a benign lesion of oral mucosa with unclear pathogenesis. The etiology of TUGSE is still not clear, but traumatic irritation is considered to be the most likely cause. The lesion is usually self-limiting and regresses on its own or after biopsy and recurrence or reappearance of lesion is rare.
