Editorial: COVID-19 pandemic and the social determinants of health.

As we learn to co-exist with COVID-19, this Research Topic highlights significant research contributions that examine the interaction of COVID-19 and the social determinants of health. To emphasize the impactful research in this area, this Research Topic features scholarly contributions in the fields of Epidemiology, specifically Aging and Life-course Epidemiology, and Public Health, specifically Public Health Policy. This theme is intentionally broad in scope, and our editorial provides an overview of the key findings of the papers published in the Research Topic on COVID-19 pandemic and the social determinants of health.

The impact of accreditation on continuous quality improvement process in undergraduate medical education programs: A scoping review.

Background: Accreditation in medical education has existed for more than 100 years, yet the impact of accreditation remains inconclusive. Some studies have shown the effects of accreditation on student outcomes and educational processes at medical schools. However, evidence showing the impact of accreditation on continuous quality improvement of undergraduate medical education programs is still in its infancy.

Nurse practitioners' degrees and associations with time use, functional autonomy, and job outcomes.

Background: Doctorate of Nursing Practice preparation is recommended for entry to nurse practitioner (NP) practice but there are few comparative studies, and their designs conflate educational pathways.

Purpose: To investigate time use, functional autonomy, and job outcomes among NPs without a doctorate, NPs whose initial NP preparation and doctorate were separated by 2 or more years, and NPs whose NP preparation and doctorate were concurrent.

Method: We selected all NPs from the 2018 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses, except those whose doctorates focused on research.

Coalition for Global Hearing Health Hearing Care Pathways Working Group: Guidelines for Clinical Guidance for Readiness and Development of Evidence-Based Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Programs.

Editor's Note: The following article discusses the timely topic Clinical Guidance in the areas of Evidence-Based Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Programs. This article aims to discuss areas of services needed, guidance to countries/organizations attempting to initiate early hearing detection and intervention systems. Expert consensus and systematic/scoping reviews were combined to produce recommendations for evidence-based clinical practice.

Outcome of Cancer Patients with an Unplanned Intensive Care Unit Admission: Predictors of Mortality and Long-term Survival.

Background: Understanding the characteristics and outcomes of cancer patients with unplanned ICU admission is imperative for therapeutic decisions and prognostication purposes.

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of patients with hematological and non-hematological malignancies (NHM) who require unplanned ICU admission and to determine the predictors of mortality and long-term survival.

Methods: This retrospective study included all patients with cancer who had an unplanned ICU admission between 2011 and 2016 at a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia.

What are the barriers to health professionals' training on gender-affirming care from patients' and clinicians' perspectives?

Objective: The aim of the study is to identify the barriers to gender-affirming health care education for providers from the perspectives of patients and providers.

Methods: A qualitative study based on grounded theory was conducted. Participants included transgender and gender diverse (TGD) patients seeking care, as well as resident physicians and attending physicians involved in care of patients seeking gender-affirming care.

Social Support Mediates the Association Between Abilities and Participation After Stroke.

Stroke survivors face participation restrictions, yet little is known regarding how social support affects the association between an individual's abilities and participation. Through a Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model lens, social support was examined as a potential mediator between ability and participation in cognitively and mobility-demanding activities for stroke survivors with aphasia (persons with aphasia [PWA]) and without aphasia (persons without aphasia [PWOA]). A cross-sectional design, including PWA ( = 50) and PWOA ( = 59) examined associations among person factors (physical impairment, cognition), an environmental factor (social support), and occupational participation through cognitively- and mobility-demanding activity subscales of the Activity Card Sort.

Primary care barriers and facilitators to nonpharmacologic treatments for low back pain: A qualitative pilot study.

Background: Clinical practice guidelines encourage primary care providers (PCPs) to recommend nonpharmacologic treatment as first-line therapy for low back pain (LBP). However, the determinants of nonpharmacologic treatment use for LBP in primary care remain unclear, particularly in low-income settings.

Objective: To pilot a framework-informed interview guide and codebook to explore determinants of nonpharmacologic treatment use in primary care.

Development of an Infantile GM2 Clinical Rating Scale: Remote Assessment of Clinically Meaningful Health-Related Function.

GM2 gangliosidoses (GM2) are a group of rare lysosomal storage disorders in which accumulation of GM2 gangliosides results in progressive central nervous system damage. The infantile GM2 phenotype is characterized by delays in milestones by 6 months of age, followed by rapid loss of motor, cognitive, and visual function. Advancements in early diagnosis and pharmacotherapies provide promise for improved outcomes.

Ethnoracial Disparities in Perinatal Outcomes Among Women Veterans.

Non-Hispanic Black women have increased rates of preterm birth and low infant birth weight. However, we do not know if these disparities replicate in women veterans, a population that may be at further risk for poor perinatal outcomes. This study sought to examine ethnoracial differences in preterm birth and low infant birth weight in veterans.

The one cloud on a sunny day: Using emotional intelligence to manage emotions from negative written feedback.

Physician trainees receive anonymous written feedback about their clinical performance, which can be challenging to interpret. Negative written feedback can evoke a strong emotional response. An educational gap exists on how to handle receiving negative written feedback and the accompanying emotions.

Psychosocial Distress Among Certified Nursing Assistants in Long-Term Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Social Ecological Model Informed Scoping Review.

Objectives: This scoping review maps the literature on psychosocial distress and coping among nursing assistants (CNAs) in long-term care facilities (LTC) during the COVID-19 pandemic onto the Social Ecological Model (SEM) of Occupational Stress.

Understanding distance health care simulation debriefing is crucial in light of the increased use of and emerging technology in remote education for reasons of accessibility, global collaboration, and continuous professional development. This article is a confluence of a number of previously published studies designed to serve as a foundation to develop the concept of "engagement in health care distance simulation debriefing" using the Schwartz-Barcott & Kim hybrid mixed methods model. The model uses 3 phases: theoretical (a realist systematic review of the literature), fieldwork (3 exploratory studies and 2 pilot experimental studies), and analytical (analysis of the theoretical and fieldwork findings through expert discussion).

A Longitudinal Investigation of the Association Between Stroke and Loneliness.

Objectives: The present research examined associations between stroke and long-term trajectories of loneliness.

Methods: We conducted secondary analyses in 3 large representative panel studies of adults 50 years and older in the United States, Europe, and Israel: the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA; analytic N = 14,992); the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE; analytic N = 103,782); and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS; analytic N = 22,179). Within each sample, we used discontinuous growth curve modeling to estimate loneliness trajectories across adulthood and the impact of stroke on loneliness trajectories.

Nurse Leader Mindfulness Pilot Impact on Perceived Stress: A Quality Improvement Project.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated pre-existing stressful conditions in health care, further elevating the risk of negative health outcomes for nurses and particularly nurse leaders. The aim of this pilot project was to assess the efficacy of mindfulness practices in attenuating nurse leaders' perceived stress levels. There is a lack of evidence regarding the outcomes of stress reduction programs aimed at health care staff, especially for nurse leaders within the clinical setting.
