December 2024

From the MGH Institute of Health Professions (J.C.P., C.J.M., A.M.), Boston, MA; Alfaisal University (C.J.M.), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Oxford Medical (A.M.); SimConverse (A.M.); University of Miami (C.F.), Coral Gables, FL; University of Calgary (A.C.), Calgary, Canada; and Athabasca University (T.A.), Athabasca, Canada.

Understanding distance health care simulation debriefing is crucial in light of the increased use of and emerging technology in remote education for reasons of accessibility, global collaboration, and continuous professional development. This article is a confluence of a number of previously published studies designed to serve as a foundation to develop the concept of "engagement in health care distance simulation debriefing" using the Schwartz-Barcott & Kim hybrid mixed methods model. The model uses 3 phases: theoretical (a realist systematic review of the literature), fieldwork (3 exploratory studies and 2 pilot experimental studies), and analytical (analysis of the theoretical and fieldwork findings through expert discussion).

Objectives: The present research examined associations between stroke and long-term trajectories of loneliness.

Methods: We conducted secondary analyses in 3 large representative panel studies of adults 50 years and older in the United States, Europe, and Israel: the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA; analytic N = 14,992); the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE; analytic N = 103,782); and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS; analytic N = 22,179). Within each sample, we used discontinuous growth curve modeling to estimate loneliness trajectories across adulthood and the impact of stroke on loneliness trajectories.

Author Affiliations: Endicott College, Cummings School of Nursing & Health Sciences, Beverly, Massachusetts (Dr Buckley) and MGH Institute of Health Professions, School of Nursing, Boston, Massachusetts (Dr Sipe).

The recent COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated pre-existing stressful conditions in health care, further elevating the risk of negative health outcomes for nurses and particularly nurse leaders. The aim of this pilot project was to assess the efficacy of mindfulness practices in attenuating nurse leaders' perceived stress levels. There is a lack of evidence regarding the outcomes of stress reduction programs aimed at health care staff, especially for nurse leaders within the clinical setting.

Quantifying saccadic eye movements can assist in identifying dysfunctional brain networks in both healthy and diseased people. Infrared Oculography is a simple and non-invasive approach to capturing and quantifying saccades, providing information that might aid in diagnosis and outcome assessments. The effect of spinal manipulation on quantified saccadic performance parameters has not been fully studied despite known post-manipulative effects on the brain and brainstem regions controlling them.

Introduction: Soldiers must be able to perform a multitude of physically demanding tasks as part of their regular duty, but their physical readiness is often degraded due to pain and musculoskeletal injury (MSKI). The presence of pain with movement has been associated with increased MSKI risk in Soldiers. Improved awareness of the prevalence of painful movements in uninjured Soldiers could help inform Army injury mitigation efforts.

Self-perceived recovery after stroke can substantially impact quality of life. Yet, a disability paradox exists whereby disability and perceived recovery do not align. This study explored stroke survivors' perceptions of their communication and mobility recovery, including perceived facilitators and barriers.

Purpose: Motor deficits are widely documented among autistic individuals, and speech characteristics consistent with a motor speech disorder have been reported in prior literature. We conducted an auditory-perceptual analysis of speech production skills in low and minimally verbal autistic individuals as a step toward clarifying the nature of speech production impairments in this population and the potential link between oromotor functioning and language development.

Method: Fifty-four low or minimally verbal autistic individuals aged 4-18 years were video-recorded performing nonspeech oromotor tasks and producing phonemes, syllables, and words in imitation.

Previous studies have stated that both objective and subjective cognitive abilities and mental health symptoms are associated with community participation poststroke. However, there is a need to understand the direct and indirect associations among these variables in persons with stroke. The objective of this study was to investigate whether mental health symptoms mediate the associations of subjective and objective cognitive abilities with community participation poststroke.

FRY-like transcription coactivator (FRYL) belongs to a Furry protein family that is evolutionarily conserved from yeast to humans. The functions of FRYL in mammals are largely unknown, and variants in FRYL have not previously been associated with a Mendelian disease. Here, we report fourteen individuals with heterozygous variants in FRYL who present with developmental delay, intellectual disability, dysmorphic features, and other congenital anomalies in multiple systems.

As personalized medicine has gained traction, drug development models in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry (BPI) have increasingly sought to address medical conditions with a genetic component, creating an opportunity for genetic counselors (GCs) to fill new roles and utilize their unique training to contribute to drug development. Despite the potential for GCs in BPI, literature around the role of GCs in this industry has been limited. Our mixed methods study aimed to assess how the roles of GCs in BPI have evolved since 2016, investigate the value of and opportunity for GCs in this industry, and further characterize their motivation and job satisfaction.

Background: The socio-ecological model (SEM) is a widely used framework that can be applied to heat-related illness (HRI) in the context of multiple influencing factors that exist in society. Leaders and policymakers must intervene to mitigate the deleterious effects of climate change on those at risk.

Purpose: The purpose is to introduce the SEM as a framework to address the complex factors contributing to the impact of excess heat.

Purpose: Exome (ES) and genome sequencing (GS) are increasingly being utilized for individuals with rare and undiagnosed diseases; however, guidelines on their use remain limited. This study aimed to identify factors associated with diagnosis by ES and/or GS in a heterogeneous population of patients with rare and undiagnosed diseases.

Methods: In this case control study, we reviewed data from 400 diagnosed and 400 undiagnosed randomly selected participants in the Undiagnosed Diseases Network, all of whom had undergone ES and/or GS.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied if electroacupuncture (EA) could help mice with Alzheimer's disease (AD) improve their memory and learning skills.
  • They found that EA helped the mice move around a lot better and spend more time in the area they were supposed to remember.
  • The study showed that EA might work by improving brain activity and connections that are important for thinking and memory, while also reducing harmful proteins in their brains.
