Objective/hypothesis: Behavioral voice therapy is the most common treatment for hyperfunctional voice disorders (HVDs) but has limited long-term effectiveness since the comprehensive mechanisms underlying HVDs remain unclear. Recent work has implicated disordered sensorimotor integration during speech in some speakers with HVDs and suggests that auditory processing is a key factor to consider in HVD assessment and therapy. The purpose of this case-series study was to assess whether current voice therapy approaches for HVDs resulted in improvements to auditory-motor function.

Twenty percent of older adults report having a concern about their mental health. Mental health concerns lead to impairments in physical, mental, and social functioning and complicate the management of chronic illness. These concerns are widely underrecognized and often untreated or under-treated in community-dwelling older adults.

Children with dyslexia frequently also struggle with math. However, studies of reading disability (RD) rarely assess math skill, and the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying co-occurring reading and math disability (RD+MD) are not clear. The current study aimed to identify behavioral and neurocognitive factors associated with co-occurring MD among 86 children with RD.

Tracheoesophageal (TE) puncture with voice prosthesis placement is a common method for vocal rehabilitation in patients who have undergone total laryngectomy. Tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis (TEP) placement after laryngectomy, known as secondary TE puncture, is traditionally done in the operating room, using rigid esophagoscopy. Traditional secondary TEP placement carries a number of downsides including risks associated with general anesthesia, high cost, and technical challenges associated with anatomical variables.

Purpose: This survey study examined factors that may influence interprofessional collaboration in schools to support children with oral and written language impairments, namely, knowledge, collaborative beliefs and practices, and resources.
Method: A survey was conducted across 319 school-based professionals, in a partnering public school district, to examine these constructs within the context of each individual participant's professional role.
Results: Between-groups comparisons were made between special educators, general educators, paraprofessionals, and indirect educators (i.

Background: The pathophysiology of adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD) remains unknown; however, there is growing evidence that dystonia is associated with disruptions in the inhibitory regulation of sensorimotor cortical areas. Using functional MRI (fMRI) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) complementarily, we previously demonstrated an overly activated laryngeal motor cortex and revealed correlations between blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) activation and intracortical inhibition in a phonation (dystonia-related) task in adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD).
Objective: Here, we aimed to characterize the brain-based findings in the primary motor cortex (M1) during a dystonia-unrelated (finger tapping) task in AdLD and controls (CTL).
Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) demonstrate deficits in executive functioning; however, the specific components of executive functioning that are affected in this population are not well understood. This study evaluated set shifting and feedback processing in a Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) performed by 24 children with and without DLD. The behavioral results revealed poorer performance by the DLD group in measures of accuracy, proportion of correct rule shifts, perseverative errors on shift trials, and proportion of effective responses to feedback.

The psychosocial impacts of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on women Veterans' mental health compared to men are understudied, with few studies examining the differential impact of COVID-19 stressors on depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Furthermore, little is known about whether social support may buffer against adverse pandemic-related outcomes for this population. In the present study, we examined (1) gender differences in the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on numerous life domains, including economic, work, home, social, and health; (2) how pandemic impacts in these domains were associated with depression and PTSD symptoms; and (3) whether social support buffered against worse mental health outcomes.

To prepare practice-ready graduates and promote NCLEX® success, many schools of nursing have adopted a clinical judgment model (CJM) to provide a framework for their curriculum and teaching strategies. Missing from most CJMs are clear principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI), imperative to prepare a nursing workforce to care holistically for diverse populations. This article describes the curriculum integration of an adapted model with added JEDI principles.

This assessment of the "top hospitals" in the US according to 4 leading rankings reveals only 4 to 7% of represented CEOs are primary care physicians by training. Greater attention to leadership development from primary care residency through health system practice is needed to avoid diminishing primary care's critical role and salutary global benefits.

Introduction: When learners fail to reach milestones, educators often wonder if any warning signs could have allowed them to intervene sooner. Machine learning can predict which students are at risk for failing a high-stakes certification examination. If predictions can be made well before the examination, educators can meaningfully intervene before students take the examination to reduce their chances of failing.

Preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M) is a reproductive technology used in conjunction with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) to reduce the risk of passing on a known genetic condition from parent to child. There is limited research describing the experience and emotional impact of PGT-M among individuals with inherited aortic or vascular disease (IAVD). Our qualitative study aims to explore the factors that influence reproductive decision-making and the uptake of PGT-M within this population.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease in which autoreactive CD4 T cells play an essential role. We extracted CD4 T cells from SLE-prone Fcgr2b mice to elaborate the mechanism of mitochondrial Lon protease in CD4 T cell activation in SLE. Transcriptome sequencing was performed in SLE-prone Fcgr2b mice, and the stimulator of interferon gene (STING) related to SLE was obtained.

In recent years, the role of the speech-language therapist/pathologist (SLT/P) has become increasingly established in the assessment, care, and management of primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Throughout the progression of the condition, the role of SLT/P encompasses 5 notable domains: behavioral assessment, impairment-based intervention, compensatory strategy intervention, communication partner training, and informational counseling. The SLT/P brings a unique perspective and clinical arsenal to address the linguistic, functional, and psychosocial effects that PPA can have on a person's life.

Background: A central challenge to precision medicine research efforts is the return of genetic research results in a manner that is effective, ethical, and efficient. Formal tests of alternate modalities are needed, particularly for racially marginalized populations that have historically been underserved in this context.
Methods: We are conducting a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to test scalable modalities for results return and to examine the clinical utility of returning genetic research results to a research cohort of Black women.

Purpose: Young adults with anxiety are vulnerable to developing persistent symptoms following concussions. In order to develop psychosocial interventions to prevent persistent post-concussion symptoms, we need to understand patients' 1) experiences with treatments offered by health care providers; 2) experiences with attempted concussion management strategies; and 3) needs after their injury.
Methods: We conducted in-depth interviews with 17 young adults with recent (≤ 10 weeks) concussions who have at least mild anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment-7 ≥ 5).

Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to establish the reliability of candidate items as a step in the development of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis-Bulbar Dysfunction Index-Remote (ALS-BDI-Remote), a novel tool being developed for the detection and monitoring of bulbar signs and symptoms in remote settings.
Method: The set of candidate items included 40 items covering three domains: cranial nerve examination, auditory-perceptual evaluation, and functional assessment. Forty-eight participants diagnosed with ALS and exhibiting a range of bulbar disease severity were included.
