December 2023

1st Chair and Department of Oncological Gynaecology and Gynaecology, Medical University in Lublin, 20-081 Lublin, Poland.

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynaecological cancer and the eighth most common female cancer. The early diagnosis of ovarian cancer remains a clinical problem despite the significant development of technology. Nearly 70% of patients with ovarian cancer are diagnosed with stages III-IV metastatic disease.

Introduction: Massively parallel sequencing of mitogenomes usually requires prior amplification. The PCR step may influence the quality of the data obtained, especially when low-level heteroplasmy detection is applied.

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the reliability of two different DNA polymerases in detecting homoplasmic and heteroplasmic substitutions in human mitogenomes.

Introduction And Objective: Lung cancer is the most common malignant tumour. More than 80% of all diagnosed cases are non-small cell carcinoma which can be effectively treated by radical resection. Despite significant progress in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic methods, the results of lung cancer treatment are still unsatisfactory.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) have a significantly heightened risk of developing other malignancies (OMs), with a study tracking nearly 20,000 CLL patients revealing 3,513 OMs diagnosed over 129,254 years of follow-up.
  • The study found that treatment with fludarabine and cyclophosphamide increased the likelihood of developing myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), while non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and prostate cancer were common solid tumors in treated patients.
  • Importantly, patients with CLL who developed OMs had lower overall survival rates, especially those diagnosed with AML and MDS, highlighting that C

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied the vaginal bacteria of 100 women to see if it relates to cervical cancer caused by HPV.
  • They found that two specific types of bacteria were common in women with abnormal Pap smears, and age and where they lived affected the variety of bacteria.
  • However, they did not find a strong connection between the type of cervical cell changes and the vaginal bacteria they looked at.

Tannic acid (TA) is an organic compound belonging to the tannin group. Like other tannins, it has an affinity for endogenous proteins, including digestive enzymes, which can result in the reduced digestibility and absorption of nutrients. It can also form complexes with mineral components, reducing their absorption.

Background: Tumour development is greatly influenced by the systemic inflammatory response. Inflammatory factors, such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphcyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), mirror the balance between systemic inflammation and anti-tumour response. The current investigation examined the predictive and prognostic value of NLR, PLR, and LMR in advanced gastric cancer (GC) patients.

In this retrospective international multicenter study, we describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and related disorders (small lymphocytic lymphoma and high-count monoclonal B lymphocytosis) infected by SARS-CoV-2, including the development of post-COVID condition. Data from 1540 patients with CLL infected by SARS-CoV-2 from January 2020 to May 2022 were included in the analysis and assigned to four phases based on cases disposition and SARS-CoV-2 variants emergence. Post-COVID condition was defined according to the WHO criteria.

Pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) is a pain syndrome characterized by positional pelvic pain and is associated with pelvic and vulvar varicosities as well as symptoms of dyspareunia and postcoital pain. Since the etiology of PCS is complex, the treatment should be individualized. Despite both pharmacological and interventional methods being used, there is significant predominance of minimally invasive therapies e.

Mitochondria are organelles necessary for oxidative phosphorylation. The interest in the role of mitochondria in the process of carcinogenesis results from the fact that a respiratory deficit is found in dividing cells, especially in cells with accelerated proliferation. The study included tumor and blood material from 30 patients diagnosed with glioma grade II, III and IV according to WHO (World Health Organization).

According to recent data, changes in the vaginal microbiota could affect the risk of gynaecological cancers. Women suffering from endometrial cancer present significant changes in cervicovaginal microbiota composition. The objective of our study was to characterize the cervicovaginal microbiota of women undergoing hysterectomy due to benign disease, atypical hyperplasia, and endometrial cancer; The study included 96 patients, who undergone surgical treatment due to benign uterine disease, precancerous endometrial lesion, and endometrial cancer.

To this day, the quest to find new drugs is still a challenge due to the growing demands of patients suffering from chronic inflammatory diseases and the need for the individualization of therapy. The aim of this research was to synthesize new 1,2,4-triazole derivatives containing propanoic acid moiety and to investigate their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anthelmintic activity. Compounds - were obtained in reactions of amidrazones - with succinic anhydride.

The results of kinetic measurements revealed an accelerating effect of acetazolamide (ACT) on the multistep In(III) ions electroreduction in chlorates(VII) on a novel, cyclically renewable liquid silver amalgam film electrode (R-AgLAFE). The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were determined by applying the DC polarography, square-wave (SWV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was shown that ACT catalyzed the electrode reaction ("cap-pair" effect) by adsorbing on the surface of the R-AgLAFE electrode.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide for both men and women. Surgery can be offered as a radical treatment at stages I and II and selected cases of stage III (III A). Whereas at more advanced stages, combined modalities of treatment are applied: radiochemotherapy (IIIB) and molecularly targeted treatment (small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors, VEGF receptor inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, and immunological treatment with monoclonal antibodies).

The diagnosis of metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is significant for patients' prognosis, as the disease accelerates the development of cardiovascular complications and, on the other hand, cardiometabolic conditions are risk factors for the development of fatty liver diseases. This expert opinion presents principles of MAFLD diagnosis and standards of management to reduce cardiovascular risks in patients with MAFLD.

Bone marrow is an abundant source of both hematopoietic as well as non-hematopoietic stem cells. Embryonic, fetal and stem cells located in tissues (adipose tissue, skin, myocardium and dental pulp) express core transcription factors, including the , and gene responsible for regeneration, proliferation and differentiation into daughter cells. The aim of the study was to examine the expression of and genes in CD34-positive peripheral blood stem cells (CD34+ PBSCs) and to analyze the influence of cell culture on the expression of and genes.

Natural hydrogels are widely used as biomedical materials in many areas, including drug delivery, tissue scaffolds, and particularly wound dressings, where they can act as an antimicrobial factor lowering the risk of microbial infections, which are serious health problems, especially with respect to wound healing. In this review article, a number of promising strategies in the development of hydrogels with biocidal properties, particularly those originating from natural polymers, are briefly summarized and concisely discussed. Common strategies to design and fabricate hydrogels with intrinsic or stimuli-triggered antibacterial activity are exemplified, and the mechanisms lying behind these properties are also discussed.
