Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed trends and racial disparities in hospitalizations for diverticular disease (DD) from 2017 to 2020, using data from over 1.2 million hospitalizations to assess outcomes like mortality and resource use by race and ethnicity.
  • - Findings revealed that White patients accounted for 75.3% of DD hospitalizations, were generally younger, and that overall hospitalizations increased until 2020, when a significant decrease of 11.8% occurred.
  • - Notably, mortality rates and in-hospital complications varied by race, with significant differences in outcomes observed, highlighting ongoing disparities in healthcare for different ethnic groups.

Background: Spinal ventral root avulsion results in massive motoneuron degeneration with poor prognosis and high costs. In this study, we compared different isoforms of basic fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), overexpressed in stably transfected Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), following motor root avulsion and repair with a heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB).

Methods: In the present work, hESCs bioengineered to overexpress 18, 23, and 31 kD isoforms of FGF2, were used in combination with reimplantation of the avulsed roots using HFB.

Ingestion of button batteries by children is increasing every year, which is becoming a clinical problem for pediatricians. The number of complications and mortality when using batteries exceeds similar indicators when accidentally swallowing other foreign bodies. This is due to the electrochemical and mechanical effect of the battery on the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract and especially the esophagus.

Dorsal root rhizotomy (DRZ) is currently considered an untreatable injury, resulting in the loss of sensitive function and usually leading to neuropathic pain. In this context, we recently proposed a new surgical approach to treat DRZ that uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) gel to restore the spinal reflex. Success was correlated with the reentry of primary afferents into the spinal cord.

Thermal behavior of biological apatite is the object of several studies. Crystal size, carbonate content, phase composition, and other parameters change during annealing up to 900 °C in biological minerals with apatite structure. The way these parameters change reflects the specific properties of the initial bioapatite.

Present article is devoted to the study of the correlation between vitamin B12 serum level, hyperhomocysteinaemia and dyslipidemia. During research there were discovered that the lowest vitamin B12 serum level and the highest homocysteine serum level have been registrated in associated pathology (ischemic heart disease and acid peptic disease according to long-term proton pump inhibitor use) patients. It was shown evident correlation between that changes and dyslipidemia.
