MEMS electrostatic actuators can suffer from a high control voltage and a limited displacement range, which are made more prevalent by the pull-in effect. This study explores a tri-electrode topology to enable a reduction in the control voltage and explores the effect of various solid materials forming the space between the two underlying stationary electrodes. Employing solid dielectric material simplifies fabrication and can reduce the bottom primary electrode's fixed voltage.

Plant viruses have traditionally been studied as pathogens in the context of understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of a particular disease affecting crops. In recent years, viruses have emerged as a new alternative for producing biological nanomaterials and chimeric vaccines. Plant viruses were also used to generate highly efficient expression vectors, revolutionizing plant molecular farming (PMF).

Motivation: Multiomics cancer profiles provide essential signals for predicting cancer survival. It is challenging to reveal the complex patterns from multiple types of data and link them to survival outcomes. We aim to develop a new deep learning-based algorithm to integrate three types of high-dimensional omics data measured on the same individuals to improve cancer survival outcome prediction.

Wheat ( spp.) is a major field crop in Canada in terms of acreage, annual production, and export market value. There are nine classes of Canadian wheat based on growth habit (winter or spring), kernel hardness (hard or soft), seed coat color (red or white), and quality factors (grain protein content and gluten strength).

Development and use of resistant wheat cultivars is the most practical and economical approach for the control of Fusarium head blight (FHB). In the present study, a population of recombinant inbred lines derived from the cross between 'AC Brio' (a Canadian bread wheat cultivar moderately susceptible to FHB) and 'TC 67' (an FHB-resistant cultivar derived from Triticum timopheevii) was used to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for FHB resistance using microsatellite molecular markers. Multiple interval mapping detected several QTL for FHB resistance on the chromosomes 5AL and 6A.

Oxidation of glycine in photorespiratory pathway is the major flux through mitochondria of C3 plants in the light. It sustains increased intramitochondrial concentrations of NADH and NADPH, which are required to engage the internal rotenone-insensitive NAD(P)H dehydrogenases and the alternative oxidase. We discuss here possible mechanisms of high photorespiratory flux maintenance in mitochondria and suggest that it is fulfilled under conditions where the concentrations of glycine decarboxylase reaction products NADH and CO2 achieve an equilibrium provided by malate dehydrogenase and carbonic anhydrase, respectively.

Purpose: To probe the thermal and structural properties of gluten proteins using ultrasound.
Methods: A new ultrasonic approach for characterizing the quality of wheat gluten proteins is described. Low frequency (50 kHz) longitudinal ultrasonic velocity, v L, measurements were performed on gluten samples extracted from three wheat flours differing in protein content and in wheat endosperm hardness.

The concept of food has expanded beyond its traditional role of survival and hunger satisfaction, to include a role in the prevention and treatment of disease. Polyphenols are classes of compounds that are synthesized by plants to serve a wide variety of functions including growth pollination and defense. These compounds have recently received increased attention in medical research.

Seed storage and disease resistance proteins are major traits of wheat. The study of their gene organization and evolution has some implications in breeding. In this study, we characterized the hexaploid wheat D-genome BAC clone TaBAC703A9 that contains a low molecular weight glutenin locus (Glu-D3) and a resistance gene analogue cluster.

Certain Fusarium species cause Fusarium head blight (FHB) in wheat and other small grains. Differences in characteristics of the pathogen species/isolates used in breeding programs may affect reaction of host genotypes, leading to erroneous results. To clarify differences among Fusarium isolates from different geographical zones, the phylogenetic, chemotypic, and pathogenic abilities of 58 isolates collected from three wheat-producing countries (Canada, Mexico, and Iran) were investigated.

Flax is an important oilseed crop in North America and is mostly grown as a fibre crop in Europe. As a self-pollinated diploid with a small estimated genome size of ~370 Mb, flax is well suited for fast progress in genomics. In the last few years, important genetic resources have been developed for this crop.

Silicon (Si) is recognized for its prophylactic role in alleviating diseases when absorbed by plants and has been proposed as a possible solution against soybean rust, caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi. However, little is known about its potential effects on soybean (Glycine max) because the plant's ability to absorb Si is poorly defined. In this work, our objectives were to evaluate and quantify the absorption of Si in leaves of different soybean cultivars and to determine if such absorption was able to enhance resistance to soybean rust.

Three genes encoding fatty acid desaturase 3 (fad3a, fad3b, and a novel fad3c) were cloned from four flax genotypes varying in linolenic acid content. Real-time PCR was used to quantify expression levels of the three fad3 genes during seed development. High amounts of both fad3a and fad3b transcripts were observed and reached their peak levels at 20 days after anthesis, except for fad3a from SP2047 where only low level expression was observed throughout seed development.
