Background: Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear a disproportionate burden of mental illness, with limited access to biomedical care. This study examined pathways to care for psychosis in rural Uganda, exploring factors influencing treatment choices.

Methods: We conducted a mixed-methods study in Buyende District, Uganda, involving 67 in-depth interviews and 4 focus group discussions (data collection continued until thematic saturation was reached) with individuals with psychotic disorders, family members, and local leaders.

Cultural adaptation of an evidence-based intervention to address mental health among youth affected by armed conflict in Colombia: An application of the ADAPT-ITT approach and FRAME-IS reporting protocols.

Background: In Colombia, over 9 million people have been impacted by armed conflict, creating a significant need for mental health services. This study aimed to culturally adapt and pilot test the Youth Readiness Intervention (YRI), an evidence-based transdiagnostic mental health intervention, for conflict-affected Colombian youth aged 18-28 years.

Methods: The eight phases of the Assessment, Decision, Administration, Production, Topical Experts, Integration, Training, and Testing (ADAPT-ITT) framework were used to culturally adapt the YRI for conflict-affected Colombian youth.

Meta-Analysis: Prevalence of Youth Mental Disorders in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Youth in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face limited access to professional mental health resources. A comprehensive assessment of the prevalence of mental disorders would build an understanding of the scope of the need. We conducted systematic searches in PsycInfo, Pubmed, AfriBib and Africa Journals Online to identify prevalence rates for five disorders (anxiety, depression, conduct disorder, attention problems and post-traumatic stress) among SSA youth with a mean age of less than 19 years.

Serious mental health conditions and exposure to adulthood trauma in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review.

Background: There is a strong link between trauma exposure and serious mental health conditions (SMHCs), such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The majority of research in the field has focused on childhood trauma as a risk factor for developing an SMHC and on samples from high-income countries. There is less research on having an SMHC as a risk factor for exposure to traumatic events, and particularly on populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Cross-modal contrastive learning for unified placenta analysis using photographs.

The placenta is vital to maternal and child health but often overlooked in pregnancy studies. Addressing the need for a more accessible and cost-effective method of placental assessment, our study introduces a computational tool designed for the analysis of placental photographs. Leveraging images and pathology reports collected from sites in the United States and Uganda over a 12-year period, we developed a cross-modal contrastive learning algorithm consisting of pre-alignment, distillation, and retrieval modules.

Many details of the operation of the mammalian cochlea are known, but how they all work together to produce cochlear amplification is not understood. Outer-hair-cell (OHC) motility produces two kinds of amplification: non-propagating amplification (NPA) that is from local OHCs, and traveling-wave amplification (TWA) that increases basilar-membrane (BM) motion. Proposed here are a series of hypotheses that provide a new explanation, the "OoC-area-pump", for TWA: (1) In the short-wave region OHC vibrations cause cyclic longitudinal motion of fluid in the organ of Corti (OoC) and peri-Deiters-cell tissue, (2) the longitudinal motion changes the local OoC area, which (3) by reticular-lamina (RL) movement drives the fluid in scala media in a way that amplifies the fluid-pressure traveling wave.

Effects of short-term, high-dose cocoa-derived flavanol supplementation on gut microbiota composition: secondary findings from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study.

Cocoa-derived flavanols (CDF) may act as prebiotics. However, evidence is inconsistent, and the duration and dose of CDF intake needed to elicit any prebiotic effect are undefined. This randomized, double-blind, crossover study determined the effects of short-term, high-dose dietary supplementation with CDF versus matched placebo on gut microbiota composition in 8 healthy adults.

Social jetlag and diet quality among US young adults: interactions with race/ethnicity.

The objective was to examine associations between social jetlag and diet quality among young adults in the US using nationally representative data from the 2017-2018 NHANES survey, and evaluate effect modification by gender and race/ethnicity. Social jetlag was considered ≥2-hour difference in sleep midpoint (median of bedtime and wake time) between weekends and weekdays. Diet quality was assessed with the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 and its 13 dietary components.

Purpose: To characterize radiographic foot/ankle bony abnormalities in elite-level, asymptomatic male basketball athletes and to investigate the association between anthropometric (age, height, weight) or sport-specific characteristics (total exposures, player position, pregame ankle taping) and the prevalence of abnormal radiographic findings in asymptomatic basketball athletes.

Methods: Elite-level basketball players who underwent routine, preseason static radiographic imaging, including anteroposterior, lateral, and mortise views of the ankle were included. Radiographs were collected from asymptomatic athletes participating in preseason history and physical with negative anterior drawer/talar tilt test.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent knee articular cartilage restoration at our institution from 2014 to 2020. The patients' knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was evaluated with the Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS) and semiquantitative synovial inflammation imaging biomarkers of the preoperative MRI.

Methods: Sixteen matched paired human cadaveric proximal humeri were randomly allocated for subpectoral BT with either CW or MB using a high-strength suture (N = 16; 8 male, 8 female, mean age = 82.5 years, range 62-99 years).

Methods: The PearlDiver Mariner database was queried for all reported cases of MPLFR, TTO, and combined MPFLRTTO performed between 2010 and 2020 using Current Procedural Terminology codes. Subsets from those cohorts with laterality-specific , , codes for patellar instability were used to evaluate 2-year incidence of infection, stiffness, fracture, and revision stabilization with MPFLR and/or TTO.

Purpose: To determine the relationship between cam morphology of the hip and ipsilateral sacroiliac motion compared to the native hip in a cadaveric model.

Methods: A simulated cam state was created using a 3-dimensional printed cam secured to the head-neck junction of 5 cadaveric hips. Hips were studied using a computed tomography-based optic metrology system and a 6 degree-of-freedom robot to exert an internal rotation torque at 3 different torque levels (6 N-m, 12 N-m, 18 N-m).

Many national meetings and speaker series feature an "Annual Review of the Literature" (ARL) session in which an individual or team presents a sampling of articles, selected and prepared because they represent important current topics or new ideas in the discipline of interest. Despite this, there is little in the medical literature describing how to thoughtfully and systematically develop these sessions. We identify best practices that we have developed and used in the United States Clerkship Directors of Internal Medicine (CDIM) over many years.

This study explores the potential of contralateral NVC-linking neural electrical activity on the stroke side with cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) on the contralesional side-as a marker of physiological function of the brain. Our aim was to examine the association between contralateral NVC and neurological outcomes in patients with ischemic stroke following endovascular thrombectomy.

Intracranial hemorrhagic events associated with flow diversion treatment: a retrospective analysis from a single academic institution.

Intracranial hemorrhages are highly concerning but underreported complications related to flow diversion (FD) treatment of intracranial aneurysms. Herein, we aimed to characterize these complications and the factors influencing their occurrence. We retrospectively reviewed patients treated with FD from 2013 to 2023 at a single U.

Background And Aims: To identify the patterns of coffee drinking timing in the US population and evaluate their associations with all-cause and cause-specific mortality.

Methods: This study included 40 725 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2018 who had complete information on dietary data and 1463 adults from the Women's and Men's Lifestyle Validation Study who had complete data on 7-day dietary record. Clustering analysis was used to identify patterns of coffee drinking timing.

How age and culture impact the neural correlates of memory retrieval.

Culture can shape memory, but little research has investigated age effects. The present study examined the neural correlates of memory retrieval for old, new, and similar lures in younger and older Americans and Taiwanese. A total of 207 participants encoded pictures of objects and, during fMRI scanning, completed a surprise object recognition task testing discrimination of similar and new from old items.

Cardiotoxicity and peri-operative considerations in immune checkpoint inhibitor and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy: a narrative review.

Introduction: Immunotherapy has transformed cancer treatment, particularly with immune checkpoint inhibitors and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy. Despite their efficacy, these therapies can induce cardiotoxicity, presenting significant clinical challenges. Immune checkpoint inhibitors can cause myocarditis; pericarditis; arrhythmias; and myocardial infarction through immune-mediated inflammation.
