Increasing carbon (C) sequestration and stability in agricultural soils is a key strategy to mitigate climate change towards C neutrality. Crop diversification is an initiative to increase C sequestration in fields, but it is unclear how legume-based crop diversification impacts the functional components of soil organic carbon (SOC) in dryland, including the formation and transformation of particulate organic carbon (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC). We investigated the decomposition of straw residues, the fate of photosynthesized C, as well as the formation of MAOC and POC fractions using an in situC labeling technique in the soybean-wheat intercropping, soybean-maize intercropping and their respective monocropping systems, with and without cover crops.

Seasonality in temperate regions is prominent during the era of increased climatic variability. A hydraulic trait that can adjust to seasonally changing climatic conditions is crucial for tree safety. However, little attention has been paid to the intraspecific seasonality of drought-related traits and hydraulic safety of keystone forest trees.

Iron Nanostructure Primes Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Symbiosis Tightly Connecting Maize Leaf Photosynthesis via a Nanofilm Effect.

ACS Nano

July 2024

State Key Laboratory of Herbage Improvement and Grassland Agroecosystems, College of Ecology, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou 730000, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how iron nanostructures, specifically nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI), can enhance plant growth, particularly when combined with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF).
  • An optimal dosage of 1.0 g·kg of nZVI can boost maize growth significantly, while excessive amounts harm plant roots and disrupt nutrient uptake, unlike FeSO which has minimal effects.
  • The appropriate nZVI facilitates the formation of a supportive nano structure on AMF, improving root colonization, gas exchange, and overall plant health, indicating nZVI plays a crucial role over traditional iron salts.

The seasonal plasticity of resistance to xylem embolism has been demonstrated in leaves of some tree species, but is controversial in stems. In this study, we investigated the seasonality of stem xylem resistance to embolism in six temperate woody species (four deciduous and two evergreen tree species) that were grown at the same site. The xylem conduit anatomy, the concentrations, and ratios of the main cation in the xylem sap, as well as the content of nonstructural carbohydrates (including soluble sugars and starch) were measured in each species under each season to reveal the potential mechanisms of seasonal change in embolism resistance.

College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Wuhan University, Wuhan, 430072, PR China. Electronic address:

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a crucial biomarker for clinical diagnosis, which is closely related to the physiological homeostasis regulation process of human body. And the abnormal level of ALP is associated with numerous diseases, such as liver dysfunction, bone diseases, diabetes, and so on. In order to meet the demand of personalized healthcare, it is particularly important to develop a miniaturized point-of-care testing (POCT) device for ALP detection.

Polysaccharides (TCMPs) derived from traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), such as Ganoderma lucidum, Astragalus membranaceus, Lycium barbarum, and Panax ginseng, are considered to be the main active constituents in TCMs. However, the significant pharmacological effects of orally administered TCMPs do not align well with their poor pharmacokinetics. This article aims to review the literature published mainly from 2010 to 2022, focusing on the relationship between pharmacokinetics and pharmacological effects.

Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • An enteric duplication cyst (EDC) is a rare birth defect that can form anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract but is mostly found in the ileum, with only 5-7% occurring in the gastroduodenal region.
  • The case described involves a 3-hour-old male baby who had a cystic mass detected through prenatal and postnatal ultrasound, indicating a possible trilaminar wall structure.
  • Surgery confirmed the diagnosis of a pyloric duplication cyst, which was successfully removed, and the patient is recovering well with normal weight gain during follow-up visits.

Neuroendocrine tumors are defined as tumors that express neuroendocrine markers, specifically synaptophysin and/or chromogranin in at least 50% of tumor cells. To date, neuroendocrine cancers of the breast are extremely rare with reports that they account for less than 1% of all neuroendocrine tumors and less than .1% of all breast cancers.

Melanoma is currently the fifth most common cancer in the United States (US) and most often develop on areas that have increased sun exposure, such as the arms, legs, back or face. The incidence of primary cutaneous melanoma increases each year and curative treatment improves with earlier detection of disease. Primary cutaneous umbilical melanoma is extremely rare with as few as 46 cases reported worldwide.

Department of Urology, Peking University First Hospital; Institute of Urology, Peking University; National Urological Cancer Center, Beijing 100034, China.

Objective: To evaluate the implications of the prognostic nutrition index (PNI) in non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients treated with surgery and to compare it with other hematological biomarkers, including neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune inflammation index (SII).

Methods: A cohort of 328 non-metastatic RCC patients who received surgical treatment between 2010 and 2012 at Peking University First Hospital was analyzed retrospectively. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to determine the optimal cutoff values of the hematological biomarkers.

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of miRNA regulated by c-myc and its mechanism in three negative breast cancer (TNBC). We constructed MDA-MB-231 cell line with low expression of c-myc by lentivirus short hairpin RNA (shRNA), analyzed the miRNA expression profile of MDA-MB-231 cell line with different expression levels of c-myc by high-throughput sequencing technology, obtained differential miRNA by bioinformatics analysis and statistical analysis, and verified hsa-mir-4723-5p by Quantitative Real-time polymerase chain reaction(QRT-PCR). The target gene of hsa-mir-4723-5p was analyzed by miRDB and miRWalk database.

Background: Modern wheat cultivars have been developed having distinct advantages in many aspects under drought stress, such as plasticity in biomass allocation and root system architecture. A better understanding of the biomass allocation mechanisms that enable modern wheat to achieve higher yields and yield-based water use efficiency (WUE ) is essential for implementing best management strategies and identifying phenotypic traits for cultivar improvement. We systematically investigated the biomass allocation, morphological and physiological characteristics of three ploidy wheat genotypes under 80% and 50% field water-holding capacity (FC) conditions.

This study aimed to compare the pharmacokinetic properties of four preparations (dispersible tablets, ordinary tablets, capsules and granules) of arbidol hydrochloride, a broad-spectrum antiviral drug, in beagle dogs. Briefly, a single dose of 100 mg of the four preparations of arbidol hydrochloride was orally administered to dogs; blood was then collected from the veins of the foreleg at different times after administration to prepare plasma samples. The plasma concentration of arbidol hydrochloride was measured using a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Preliminary studies observed a lower growth activity during the vegetative stage with higher growth attributes at the pod-filling stage among the high nitrogen (N) utilisation efficiency (NUtE) oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) genotypes, compared with the low NUtE genotypes. Therefore, we hypothesised that there would exist a critical growth stage when distinctive phenotypic traits are exhibited to regulate yield formation and NUE.
