Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how effective the SNAP score is in predicting mortality and hospital stay duration for newborns in the NICU, looking for optimal cut-off scores for different neonatal conditions.
  • Out of 295 newborns observed, it was found that a SNAP score higher than 15 indicated a 63% sensitivity and 95% specificity for predicting mortality, with a notable emphasis on very low birth weight and ventilated preterm infants.
  • The findings suggest that SNAP is a reliable measure of illness severity in newborns, helping clinicians communicate potential outcomes and necessary treatment to parents, especially with specific cut-off scores indicating increased mortality risks.
